Abstract

This study discusses the subversion of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth structure in a novel written by Christie Golden entitled Arthas: Rise of the Lich King. In most stories following the monomyth, the hero goes through three main stages: Departure, Initiation, and Return. These stages usually show the hero growing as a person and bringing something valuable back to help others. However, Arthas Menethil’s journey in the novel takes a different path. Using Campbell’s theory and an intrinsic literary approach, this study looks at how Arthas changes from a noble prince into a dark and feared figure known as the Lich King. Instead of learning wisdom or becoming a better person, Arthas becomes more obsessed, loses his morality, and turns away from the people he once wanted to protect. The analysis shows how the novel uses the monoymyth stages but changes its purpose, from a story of growth and enlightenment to one of downfall and destruction. The findings reveal how the novel repurposes the monomyth into a tale of obsession, moral collapse, and the rejection of reintegration. This study helps to understand how stories can break away from traditional patterns to explore deeper themes like failure, corruption, and the making of a villain.

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the textual functions of discourse markers (DMs) and explores gender-based differences in their usage in a real-life podcast conversation. The data source is the discourse markers from the utterances in the YouTube podcast Call Her Daddy, titled “Ed Sheeran: You Either Love Me or Hate Me,” featuring Alex Cooper as the host and Ed Sheeran as the guest. This research employs Brinton’s (1996) framework to categorize the textual functions of DMs and applies Deborah Tannen’s (1990) Difference Theory to examine gendered communication styles. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study identifies 788 total discourse markers: 591 produced by the male speaker and 197 by the female speaker. The most dominant category of textual function was fillers, followed by information indicators and sequence/relevance markers. The findings reveal that Ed Sheeran, although male, frequently used fillers and repair markers typically associated with rapport-style communication. Meanwhile, Alex Cooper, despite using fewer DMs overall, relied heavily on topic switchers and turn-taking markers, aligning with her role as host. These patterns support Tannen’s theory that male speakers tend to emphasize information and logical structure (report talk), while female speakers focus on maintaining conversational flow and interpersonal rapport (rapport talk). The study highlights how discourse markers function not only as linguistic tools but also as reflections of gender identity, conversational role, and interactional purpose in digital media discourse. Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of registers in online medical consultations on Reddit’s r/AskDocs, focusing on identifying the types of registers used by medical professionals and patients, as well as examining their contextual meanings. The urgency of this study stems from the increasing reliance on digital health platforms, which necessitates a deeper understanding of how language functions in virtual healthcare interactions. In online spaces, where communication occurs asynchronously and without face-to-face cues, the choice of language plays a crucial role in delivering clear and empathetic health information. This study is grounded in Halliday’s theory of register, which breaks down language variation into three components: field (the subject matter of discourse), tenor (the relationships between participants), and mode (the channel of communication). Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research collected 100 posts from r/AskDocs throughout 2024, selected based on the relevance and presence of medical vocabulary. The analysis found 22 frequently occurring register-related keywords, including discharge (9 times), negative (13 times), positive (15 times), and test (18 times), which are arranged alphabetically to aid clarity. These terms demonstrate semantic shifts when placed in medical contexts—for example, “negative” no longer conveys a generally undesirable condition, but rather signifies the absence of disease. Such shifts indicate a specialized use of language that differs from everyday meanings. Ultimately, the findings show that language in online medical consultations is purposefully crafted to maintain professionalism, clarity, and empathy. This research contributes to sociolinguistic scholarship by offering insights into how linguistic strategies function in digital medical discourse, and how register theory can be effectively applied to analyze online healthcare interactions.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of female sexuality in women’s spoken narratives featured on the Creatalks Entertainment YouTube channel. The research focuses on three of the most viewd videos, each presenting a woman’s personal experience involving sex, power, and emotional complexity. Using Sara Mills’ feminist stylistics as a theoretical framework, the study analyzes how the women position themselves in their stories whether as agents, victims, or both. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with the primary data consisting of video transcripts. Rather than focusing on technical linguistic elements, the analysis examines the framing of sexuality through storytelling, emotional tone, and the social context of each experience. The findings reveal that while one woman portrays herself as a clear agent of her sexuality, the other two narrate experiences that reflect a blend of agency and victimhood shaped by manipulation, emotional debt, and power imbalance. These narratives illustrate the complexity of female sexuality when shaped by authority, trust, and cultural silence. This study highlights the importance of digital storytelling in revealing how women make sense of their sexual experiences within a patriarchal context. Abstract

This research explores the multidimensional process of personal transformation experienced by the protagonist, Po, in Kung Fu Panda 3 by Tracey West. The study aims to examine Po’s internal development by focusing on his identity struggle, emotional maturation, and spiritual awakening as he transitions from a self-doubting warrior to a fully realised leader. Employing a qualitative research method, this study conducts a close reading and thematic analysis of the novel to uncover the psychological layers of Po’s transformation. The research highlights that Po’s evolution is not merely defined by physical prowess or heroic feats, but is deeply rooted in his internal reconciliation and personal growth. The findings reveal that Po’s personal transformation unfolds through three primary dimensions: psychological, emotional, and spiritual. Psychologically, Po confronts an identity crisis sparked by his sudden role as a teacher and the discovery of his biological father. His internal struggle between who he thinks he should be and who he authentically is forms the core of his psychological fragmentation. Emotionally, Po grapples with loyalty and guilt as he navigates his relationships with both his adoptive father, Mr. Ping, and his biological father, Li Shan. These emotional challenges push Po toward a deeper sense of empathy, emotional regulation, and maturity. Spiritually, Po’s journey culminates in his mastery of chi, a symbolic act of inner harmony and self-acceptance, reflecting his attainment of a fully integrated self. Abstract

This paper investigates the dynamics of cancel culture in Indonesia by analyzing the controversy surrounding Abidzar Al-Ghifari’s casting in the Indonesian remake of the Korean drama Business Proposal. Drawing on digital ethnographic methods, the study explores how online K-pop communities engage in the processes of cultural critique and symbolic resistance. Through in-depth interviews with ten fans from digital platforms such as Twitter, Reddit, Telegram, and Facebook, the research examines how both media producers and consumers negotiate aesthetic expectations, moral judgments, and representational legitimacy. The findings show that cancel culture serves not only as a mechanism of social control but also as an arena of participatory discourse where cultural standards, global influences, and national identity are contested. Ultimately, this study highlights how fan communities, empowered by digital connectivity and cultural fluency, have the capacity to influence production decisions and redefine public accountability in the entertainment industry.

Abstract

This study examines the flouting of Gricean maxims in the animated films Inside Out (2015) and Inside Out 2 (2024). Using Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975) as the theoretical framework, this research identifies the types of flouting maxims and analyzes how they contribute to character interactions. A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze 52 utterances from the movies. The findings show that all four types of maxims were flouted: manner (19 instances), relation (15), quality (9), and quantity (8). The data of this study are the utterances from the movies Inside Out (2015) and Inside Out 2 (2024). These floutings were used by characters to express sarcasm, avoid direct responses, or convey emotions indirectly. For example, characters like Anxiety and Riley often flouted the maxims to reflect inner conflict or nervousness, while others used flouting to create humor or shift the topic. The study concludes that flouting maxims in these films serves not only as a pragmatics device but also strengthens emotional expression and character development. This pragmatic strategy enriches the dialogue and makes character interactions more realistic. By understanding these instances of maxim flouting, viewers and learners can develop better interpretive skills and communication awareness.

Abstract

The intention and purpose of creating adaptations are often discussed in the film adaptation and comparative study. By using adaptation theory from Desmond and Hawkes (2006) and the instinctive theory of life and death from Sigmund Freud, this research aims to analyse the different ideas between the novel “Mickey7” and the film “Mickey17”. The analysis includes finding the intrinsic elements of both data sources and by using Freud’s life and death instinct theory, psychoanalysing the two main characters. The result showed that “Mickey17” is an intermediate adaptation. The main characters in the novel, Mickey7 and Mickey8, represent the life instinct as they both want to live and show that they want to live by solving their problem together to not being eliminated. However, the main characters in the film, Mickey17 and Mickey18, represent life and death instincts, respectively. While Mickey17 has affection and sexual desire, Mickey18 is a Mickey who is more violent and antagonistic towards Mickey17 and the other characters around them.
