Abstract

This research is entitled The Social Conflict in Que Nguyen and Adele Lim’s Raya and the Last Dragon. The focus of this research is divided into two, namely to analyze the social conflict and conflict resolution within the story. The primary data source is the screenplay of Raya and The Last Dragon by Que Nguyen and Adele Lim. This study uses sociological approach which focuses on Marxist literary criticism to analyze the social conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, as well as how the conflict resolution unfolds. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that social conflict is reflected through class structure in an unequal economic system in the form of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, as well as class conflict in the form of inequality of power resources, class resistance, and struggle for power resources. Moreover, conflict resolution is depicted in the form of class consciousness, working class unity, and social change. Thus, the study concludes that social conflicts rooted in class inequality can lead to divisions, betrayals, and struggles for power resources among groups who are suspicious of each other, and this story emphasizes that consciousness of injustice, unity among the oppressed, and collective action between them are important keys to achieve justice, equality, and sustainable peace. Keywords: bourgeoisie, class structure, conflict resolution, proletariat, social conflict,

Abstract

This study, entitled Harriet Kilpatrick’s Search for Happiness in Emily Henry’s Happy Place, explores the main character’s journeyto personal happiness using a psychological approach, specifically Martin Seligman’s PERMA theory. The objective is to examine the causes and effects behind Harriet Kilpatrick’s search for happiness. As a perfectionist and aspiring surgeon, Harriet’s emotional conflict, shaped by her unresolved relationship with Wyn, plays a central role in her internal struggle. The problem statements of this study are: (1) What causes Harriet Kilpatrick’s search for happiness in Happy Place? and (2) What is the effect of Harriet Kilpatrick's search for happiness? Using a qualitative method, the analysis is presented descriptively to explore Harriet’s emotional conflict. The findings reveal that although Harriet initially avoids vulnerability, her journey eventually leads her to fulfill all five elements of happiness within the PERMA model: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. By confronting her past and rebuilding meaningful relationships, Harriet achieves a more authentic and lasting sense of personal happiness.

Abstract

This study examines the gender based communication differences in the podcast interview titled “Ariana Grande NewAlbum ‘Eternal Sunshine,’ Wicked, Glinda Part 1.” The researchaims to identify the contrasting linguistic features used by male and female speakers, drawing from Lakoff’s theory for women’sspeech and Coates’ framework for male communication. The datawere collected by transcribing the podcast and analyzing relevantutterances using a qualitative descriptive method. The findingsreveal that male speakers frequently use commands, directquestions, and minimal responses, whereas female speakers tend to employ intensifiers, hedges, and emphatic stress. These results reinforce the idea that gender significantly influences conversational style. However, overlapping language features were also found, indicating that context and conversational dynamics contribute to linguistics choices. The study highlights the importance of podcasts as platforms for spontaneous, unscripted dialogue, making them ideal for linguistic analysis

Abstract

This thesis explores how Ann Patchett’s Tom Lake captures and expresses the unspoken emotional atmosphere of rural American life during the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of Raymond Williams’s theory of the "structure of feeling." Focusing on the novel’s portrayal of small-town community, familial labor, and generational memory, the research examines how emotions like longing, resignation, care, and quiet agency shape character identity and social relationships. Using Williams’s cultural materialism as a theoretical foundation, the study reveals how Tom Lake reflects the lived experiences of individuals whose emotions are deeply entangled with historical and socio-economic change, yet often remain unarticulated. The cherry farm, as both a physical and emotional space, becomes the central site where the past and present converge, offering a poignant setting in which Lara and her daughters navigate memory, loss, and continuity. Through narrative analysis, this thesis argues that Patchett’s use of everyday life, particularly under crisis conditions, mirrors the emotional undercurrents of a transitional era. The novel does not dramatize suffering but instead reveals the quiet persistence of meaning and feeling in ordinary routines. The result of this study demonstrates literature’s capacity to render the emotional truth of a historical moment visible through subtle, shared, and deeply human experiences. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Language style is how people have choices and alternatives in the way they use the language. Language is part of verbal communication. This research explores the concept of language style, focusing specifically on how it is utilized by female characters in the horror film “Presence.” The primary aim of this study is to describe the types of language styles employed by the female characters and to determine which style is most dominantly used throughout the movie. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative research method, where data are obtained through a close analysis of selected utterances from the movie script. These utterances are then categorized according to the five language styles proposed by Martin Joos: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. From the analysis, a total of 23 utterances spoken by female characters were identified as relevant data. These were distributed among three language style categories: one utterance was classified as consultative, fourteen as casual, and eight as intimate. The findings show that casual language style is the most frequently used. This dominance is attributed to the contextual and thematic elements of the film. “Presence” centers around themes of power, rumor, and empathy, and is set within a suburban household—an environment that naturally invites informal, emotionally expressive, and conversational interactions. The use of casual and intimate styles reflects the close relationships and tense dynamics among the characters, which align with the movie’s psychological and mysterious atmosphere. Thus, the study demonstrates how language style in cinematic dialogue is influenced by both narrative content and setting. Abstract

This study aims to compare grief in Chinonye Chukwu’s Till and Zach Braff’s A Good Person. This study applies a comparative literary approach supported by psychological theory, specifically William Worden’s Four Tasks of Mourning, to examine how grief is experienced, expressed, and resolved by the main characters. This study also uses a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis focuses on the similarities and differences in the cause of grief, tasks of grief, and the impact of grief. Mamie grieves the brutal murder of her son and transforms her sorrow into activism and justice, while Allison struggles with guilt after causing a tragic accident and begins a journey toward personal healing. The findings reveal that both characters experience the tasks of grief: accepting the reality of the loss, processing the pain, adjusting to a new reality, and finding an enduring connection, though in different ways. Although both characters experience similar grief processes, the expression and impact of grief differ significantly. Physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually, each character is affected in distinct ways depending on their background and the nature of their loss. Abstract

This study analyzes linguistic errors in the oral utterances of 50 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in speaking classes at Garlint English Course Pare who have studied for three months. Using a descriptive qualitative method and Error Analysis (EA) as the primary methodological framework, the study identified a total of 43 linguistic errors distributed significantly across noun phrase, word, and sentence levels. An in-depth observation of these patterns revealed that omission (7 cases at the word level) and misordering (6 cases at the noun phrase level, 5 cases at the sentence level) were the dominant error types most frequently committed by learners. These errors are primarily caused by intralingual transfer (such as L2 rule overgeneralization and developmental stages) and interlingual transfer from Bahasa Indonesia, for example, in the omission of the plural suffix (-s) on nouns. This research provides valuable insights for teachers and curriculum developers to design more targeted English language teaching strategies in intensive environments for the improvement of students' oral accuracy
