Abstract

Environmental issues in Indonesia have become a widely discussed topic. This is driven by many emerging environmental problems, such as water quality, deforestation, air pollution, and waste management. These various problems have encouraged environmental activists to speak up on TikTok to convey their aspirations. This effort is part of society's role in achieving the goals of the SDGs program. This study aims to analyze the discourse built by influencers on TikTok in campaigning for environmental issues that focus on climate change. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a critical paradigm. The method used in this study is the critical discourse analysis model of Teun A. van Dijk to explain how language functions in a social context and shapes people's thoughts and behavior, primarily through the TikTok algorithm. The results of this study indicate that the discourse produced by influencers considers the use of language to build closeness with the audience. In addition, there are efforts to position the audience as the subject so that it can encourage their empathy for climate change. In addition, the rhetoric and narratives produced are made by considering environmental algorithms to provide implications for the audience.

Abstract

This research aims to describe how the Peace Generation Communication Strategy counters identity politics, which is one of the primary causes of social conflict in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, this research analyzes data using the Harold D. Lasswell communication model, encompassing the components of communicator, message, channel, audience, and effect. The findings reveal that Peace Generation addresses the issue of identity politics through the Board Game for Peace scholarship program, designed to foster empathy and appreciation for diversity among youth. The The Rampung board game, created by Peacegen, simulates the reality of life in a village with diverse inhabitants, promoting collaboration, tolerance, and understanding. By tailoring its communication strategies to the needs and mindsets of younger audiences, Peace Generation effectively utilizes interactive and creative media to deliver messages of peace. This program not only encourages a shift in perspectives but also contributes to reducing the impact of identity politics in multicultural societies, fostering harmony and peaceful coexistence.

Abstract

New media, especially Instagram, has emerged as a new chapter in the discourse of utilizing political marketing of an actor, such as the @prabowo.gibran2 account. This research aims to discover Prabowo's political branding on Instagram and its relevance to George Herber Mead's symbolic interactionism theory. This research uses an interpretive social paradigm, and the research methodology uses virtual ethnography by accessing, researching, and analyzing media spaces, media documents, media objects, and user experiences. The research results show that Prabowo's political branding includes a free lunch and milk program as a policy, joget gemoy as a candidate person, and a new direction of downstream politics as a party, providing ideology, structure, and vision-mission. As for George Herber Mead's view of self, joget gemoy is a reflex action of the organism and a realization and presentation of self in social situations. Second, related to the view of mind, the encounter between thoughts and symbols related to two fingers in the form of a Korean hand heart and the definition of the situation: Gibran's appointment as vice president is a foresighted choice of segmentation and downstream. Third, related to the view of society, two discoveries about the proof of universal democracy, namely, the white shirt as a sign of Jokowi-Prabowo reconciliation and the reconciliation of political figures.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has led to a significant shift in da’wah practices, where young people tend to access their spiritual needs through online media. This condition poses a challenge for traditional da’wah majlis in attracting the younger generation. This research examines the public relations strategy of da’wah community in creating an attractive, responsive forum that understands the spiritual characteristics of contemporary youth. The research explores the Santrendelik da’wah community’s strategy in attracting young audiences. A descriptive qualitative method was used to comprehensively describe social reality, focusing on extracting meaning from individual experiences regarding the community’s public relations strategies. The data was collected through interviews, and analysis followed the Milles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show a systematic mechanism of youth development through four stages: (1) research and listening, identifying the needs of the millennial generation; (2) planning and decision making, designing innovative religious social interventions; (3) communication actions, implementing the “nongkrong tobat” program; and (4) evaluation, measuring the effectiveness of the intervention.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the literature on social media use in political campaigns using a bibliometric analysis approach, which enables the identification of trends, patterns, and collaboration networks in related research. Using data from 166 publications indexed in Scopus, this study analyzes the development of research on social media and politics. The bibliometric analysis method employed in this research includes data collection through the Scopus database with specific filters, data cleaning using the Open Refine application, and visualization of the research network using VOSviewer. The analysis results show that the research trends significantly increase, focusing mainly on social media, political communication, and elections. Countries such as Spain and Germany dominate publications on these topics. Furthermore, leading institutions such as Eötvös Loránd University and LMU Munich are essential in developing knowledge in this field. The research concludes that while social media opens great opportunities for political participation, these platforms also bring serious challenges, especially regarding disinformation and polarization. It also recommends the need for a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the impact of social media in political campaigns, as well as the importance of international collaboration and more inclusive research on gender issues and digital algorithms.

Abstract

Surabaya, one of Indonesia's metropolitan cities, cannot be said to be free from the phenomenon of lottery gambling in its community. In addition to legality and economic problems, lottery gambling in Surabaya also contains very complex social and spiritual dimensions. This study explores social and spiritual communication among lottery gamblers in Surabaya. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research method and an ethnographic approach. James Fowler's spiritual transformation theory is applied to view the social-spiritual communication of lottery gamblers in Surabaya. Based on the study's findings, in a social context, lottery gamblers can form very close solidarity. However, on the other hand, this attachment also triggers addiction and social conflict. Regarding social spirituality, Surabaya lottery gamblers have a unique pattern of using symbols and codes to interact. In addition, Surabaya lottery gamblers firmly believe in dreams, rituals, and prayers before starting to bet. This shows that although gambling is prohibited by religion and the state by law, lottery gamblers remain optimistic by seeking spiritual legitimacy in various ways, visiting sacred places, visiting shamans, interpreting dreams, and even linking social events with lottery numbers.

Abstract

The contemporary media landscape has undergone profound transformations in the digital age, fundamentally altering how information is produced, disseminated, and consumed across global societies. This study examines the intersection of media imperialism and Islamic educational institutions (pesantren) in Indonesia, focusing on how these traditional institutions resist hegemonic mainstream media narratives regarding radicalism and terrorism. Through qualitative research methodology employing in-depth interviews and content analysis, this research investigates how pesantren develop counter-narratives and alternative media strategies to challenge dominant discourse. The findings reveal that pesantren employ various forms of media resistance, including the establishment of independent media outlets, strategic use of digital platforms, and community-based communication networks. These institutions demonstrate remarkable adaptability in navigating contemporary media challenges while maintaining their cultural identity and educational mission. The study contributes to understanding media imperialism in the Indonesian context and highlights the agency of religious institutions in contesting hegemonic representations. The research concludes that pesantren’s media resistance strategies serve not only as corrective measures against misrepresentation but also as forms of cultural preservation and democratic participation in public discourse.
