Abstract

Social media and politics are inextricably intertwined variables. In a democratic system, social media has proven to be a valuable tool for political engagement. This study investigates the relationship between social media and political preferences among Generation Z in the context of the 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election. A total of 41 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Social Sciences at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Jakarta participated in an online survey conducted via Google Forms from April to May 2024. The survey targeted students aged 17–22 years from various academic disciplines. The questionnaire was structured into three thematic categories: "Social Media Usage" (5 items), "Social Media and Political Preferences" (15 items), and "Media and Political Preferences" (4 items). The data underwent descriptive quantitative analysis to summarize trends and patterns in the participants’ responses. The results, as presented in Charts 1–22, indicate that Gen Z voters utilize both social and mass media to shape their political views. Approximately 39% relied on social media, while 46% preferred mass media. A primary concern, cited by 78.15% of respondents, centered on the validity of news circulating on social media platforms. Kompas.com emerged as the most trusted source, used by 73.2% to evaluate presidential candidates, 43.9% for parliamentary candidates, and 31.7% to assess the track records of political parties. These findings highlight that, despite being digital natives, Gen Z voters actively evaluate the credibility of political information sources before forming their electoral preferences.

Abstract

This research aims to discuss the creative and ethical issues that arise from using Gus Baha's digital assets to produce religious content. This article focused on the two channels: ‘Santri Gayeng’, which requested permission from Gus Baha for content production, and ‘Pengajian Gus Baha’, an anonymous channel. This research employed the netnography method to collect data by observing the preaching content on the two channels and conducting interviews with the channel owners. This article finds three conclusions. First, Santri Gayeng and Pengajian Gus Baha' are identified as religious digital creative agencies (RDCAs), which are individuals or groups with the ability to manage digital media to provide and strengthen traditional authority. This concept differs from that of religious digital creatives (RDCs), who utilize their creative management of digital media to establish authority for themselves. Second, both RDCAs have their own standards of morality, so they both deserve to be called moralists, even though they utilize digital assets from others. Third, the moral values of both RDCAs enable them to drive creativity, allowing these agencies to produce engaging content and garner significant social media interaction.

Abstract

This study analyzes the differences in main account and second account Instagram uploads as a medium for self-disclosure among Gen Z students in Baubau city, and how the process of selecting information is carried out before being uploaded to each account. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to understand social events or symptoms, focusing on the overall picture of the research subject. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in uploads on the main account and secondary account of Instagram, considering various factors such as audience, level of trust, type of content, purpose, and socio-cultural aspects. Thus, it is not uncommon for informants to use private accounts and close friend features on their Instagram accounts. This process illustrates how informants have differentiated between the front stage and the back stage, specifically identifying which aspects of private life and which aspects of public life to balance and manage in terms of self-disclosure, privacy, and image.

Abstract

This study explores the role of local religious leaders in Koi fish farming communities in Blitar, Indonesia, focusing on how they influence social structures, convey spiritual values, and support the community’s financial well-being through communicative leadership practices. Using a qualitative grounded theory approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 20 participants across four aquaculture communities. The findings reveal that religious leaders strengthen social cohesion, mediate conflicts, and promote ethical behavior by employing interpersonal, symbolic, and ritual communication. Religious values, such as honesty, perseverance, hard work, and environmental care, are actively communicated through daily interactions. Additionally, these leaders provide training, economic guidance, and moral motivation that help fish farmers align material success with spiritual responsibility. This study highlights that communication serves as a central mechanism in religious leadership, fostering a value-based and sustainable aquaculture community. The findings contribute to the development of religious social capital theory, planned behavior theory, and religious leadership in the context of local economic communities.

Abstract

Faced with the escalating pressures of digital transformation, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are struggling to adapt to evolving consumer behavior and intensifying online competition. This study examines the impact of social media engagement—specifically the number of followers and the allocation of advertising budgets—on the sales performance of MSMEs. Employing the Digital Marketing Theory, which emphasizes the strategic importance of online visibility and digital consumer interaction, this research adopts a quantitative approach using the Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method. Data were collected through an online survey of 100 MSMEs from various sectors in Semarang, Indonesia. The findings reveal that both the number of social media followers and the advertising budget have a positive and significant influence on the sales volume of MSMEs. A growing follower base indicates increased brand awareness and trust, which in turn enhances the effectiveness of promotional messages and drives purchasing decisions. Additionally, higher engagement levels between consumers and brands on social media platforms are shown to strengthen customer relationships and contribute to higher sales conversion rates. These insights underline the importance of strategic digital marketing efforts for MSMEs aiming to compete effectively in the evolving digital marketplace.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the cultivation of the religious tolerance value through Habib Ja’far’s preaching messages and their impact on the audiences. The primary data sources in this research were the YouTube content “Login” episode 21 and the comments from its audiences. Meanwhile, the secondary data sources were several previous research results and relevant references. This research utilized a descriptive qualitative approach by combining observation and documentation techniques, also analysis techniques by Eriyanto. The results of this research indicated that: 1) Habib Ja’far cultivated the values of religious tolerance through bil-hal and bil-hikmah preaching wrapped in bil-lisan preaching, in the form of inclusive narratives, humorous approaches, interactive dialogues that prioritize empathy, and concrete actions. Among these values of tolerance are: a) religious differences were not a reason to break the bond between parents and children, b) differences in religion and beliefs were not obstacles in establishing harmonious relationships between parents and children, and c) religion was a choice, not inherited, and there was no compulsion in religion. 2) There were 92.55% of audience responses indicating positive acceptance of the concept and practice of religious tolerance presented and exemplified by Habib Ja’far, Onad, Mama Elly, and her children. The conclusion of this study confirms that building religious tolerance through digital da'wah methods is effective enough and relevant to the needs of the digital generation.

Abstract

The dialectic of ideas presented by the presidential candidates becomes important for people when deciding whom to vote for. This research aims to examine the ideas presented by the presidential candidates during the forum related to urban restoration. The analysis of the study employs critical discourse analysis, incorporating observation and documentation methods. The results of the study show that Ganjar Pranowo presented ideas related to the programs he run in the provincial government. He primarily discussed the importance of accountability and transparency as a manifestation of his election promise. He did not discuss the city dynamics. He briefly discussed the importance of local governments actively utilizing the global market. His political background and experiences did not provide support for formulating the concept of urban restoration. On the other hand, Anies Rasyid Baswedan systematically explained the problems, challenges, and principles of an ideal city that must be considered and implemented by the local governments. The problems of urbanization, fiscal capacity, social disparities in urban communities, environmental conditions, and the roadmap that needed to be carried out by the mayors and their staff were presented coherently. His bright ideas on the city cannot be separated from his insight and experiences. He was once the Rector of Paramadina University. He also achieved many notable accomplishments during his tenure as Governor of DKI Jakarta. Meanwhile, Prabowo Subianto did not mention about city problems. Prabowo emphasized that the downstream program, which will become the state government’s initiative, will later be financially beneficial for the mayors.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between democracy, media independence, and citizen journalism during Joko Widodo’s administration. Within the media ecosystem, the press plays a crucial role as an information provider, a social control mechanism, and the fourth pillar of democracy. However, during Jokowi’s presidency, the independence of mainstream media has faced significant challenges. This study identifies that mainstream media in Indonesia have experienced a distortion of independence due to political intervention, media ownership affiliations with those in power, and various regulations that suppress press freedom. This study employs a qualitative approach using Critical Discourse Analysis, allowing data collection from multiple sources, including mainstream media, social media platforms, as well as legal and academic documents. The findings show that democracy and press independence have declined during Jokowi's era. Although citizen journalism provides a new space for freedom of expression, challenges remain in the form of legal threats, political intervention, and difficulties in maintaining information credibility. Therefore, further efforts are required to strengthen press freedom, including regulatory reforms and the enhancement of an independent media ecosystem, to ensure that democracy in Indonesia can develop more robustly. The strategy of diversifying income to reduce dependence on capital owners, government advertising, or conglomerates with political interests is the ideal theory and practice to be offered to the press in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the social movement of the Labuan Bajo community, which is part of the Save Pantai Pede Movement, as a form of resistance to the privatization of public space by the provincial government and private investors. The primary issue in this study is the power imbalance in the management of public space, which contributes to the marginalization of local communities. This study employs a critical approach, utilizing Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis and Pierre Bourdieu's theories of habitus, capital, and social field as analytical tools. Data were obtained through documentation studies, observations, and in-depth interviews, which were analyzed at three levels: textual, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The study's results show that the community, particularly young people and local artists, produces a discourse of resistance through art and public symbols that affirm public space as a shared right. This movement has succeeded in transforming the commercialization project into a broader public debate on spatial justice and community political participation. These findings confirm that community-based social movement can be an effective tool for political negotiation in addressing structural and capitalist domination of public space.
