Abstract

Fire emergency is a common phenomenon in educational institutions, usually with lethal results if not immediately in an event of outbreak. The consequences usually include loss of life, injuries, destruction of property and institutional facilities in this year alone nearly 50 cases of school fire outbreaks have been reported in Kenya with disastrous results. Yet a comparative study of this nature in the named country is hardly there and hence it will bridge the knowledge gap in the concern. The purpose of the study was to assess the emergency of fire disaster preparedness in public and private secondary schools in Kenya.Spefically the study sought to determine the causes of frequent fire outbreaks in educational institutions in Kenya; to determine the consequences of fire outbreaks in Kenyan schools; determine the fire emergency preparedness in schools within the framework established by the Ministry of Education 2008 and to determine the way forward toward fire emergency preparedness in Kenyan Secondary schools. The study adopted meta-analysis of empirical studies in accordance to Ferrer 1998.The study established that: there are diverse causes of fire outbreaks in schools including electric faults, eruption of gas cylinders in the laboratories, use of candles in the dormitories in case of blackouts, students’ misunderstandings with school administration leading to strikes and burning schools’ property, others could be due to suspicious arsonist work. Consequences of fire outbreaks include destruction of schools’ infrastructure and property and students’ belongings, injuries and even death. That most of schools do not meet the required MOEST schools’ safety standards (2008), with grilled windows, lack of fire extinguishers, no fire assembly site. That way forward includes meeting MOEST safety guidelines, schools’ finding means preventing any possible strikes that can lead to burning of schools’ property.

Abstract

The ideology behind micro-teaching, a widely used pedagogical approach in teacher education, is currently being scrutinized and questioned regarding its effectiveness in developing the competence of pre-service teachers. This study examines the principles behind micro-teaching exercises to an innovative approach (Digital video) that could be combined with the traditional procedure to improve micro-teaching methodology. The study adopts the qualitative method as a source of data collection. Two focus group discussions comprising five (5) participants were used, and responses were analyzed with thematic analysis, three themes were generated for discussion which include; (1)the perception of micro-teaching exercises (2) digital video as an active form of participation, and (3)in-depth knowledge of good practices. From the themes, the findings of this study reveal how digital video and teaching rehearsals may improve the implementation procedure and methods of micro-teaching exercises to enhance the pre-service teachers' competence.

Abstract

Language competence is required among teachers for effective professional practice because they use language as a medium and object of instruction. This study aimed to determine the private basic education teachers' language competence. A mixed method was utilized to gather data. The study revealed that basic education teachers have an overall basic level of language competence. It is attributed to insufficient knowledge of grammatical rules, amount of workload, lack of awareness about the language’s social rules, lack of seminars and training for professional development, use of code-switching, weak foundation on sensitivity, culture, behavior, and non–verbal communication, and anxiety in using English. Furthermore, English teachers and those who have higher educational attainment have an advanced level of overall language competence, while teachers who have longer years in teaching and those who have high educational attainment have an advanced level of sociolinguistic and strategic competence respectively. This implies that teachers who do not specialize in English, who are new in the teaching profession, and who are holders of bachelor's degree must undergo more training and seminars to intensify their competence in language; hence, there is a necessity to propose and implement a differentiated developmental program.

Character education is an important aspect in the world of education, especially in forming disciplined behavior from an early age. This study analyzes various sources such as journal articles, theses, and books that are relevant and published in the last ten years. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of character education integrated into subjects, extracurricular activities, and school culture has a positive impact on improving student discipline. Supporting factors such as principal leadership, teacher and parent involvement, and adequate facilities also strengthen the success of this program. On the other hand, limited teacher training and inconsistent application of values are major obstacles. This study concludes that character education that is implemented in a planned, consistent, and collaborative manner has proven effective in forming disciplined behavior in elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of inclusive education in reducing learning gaps between students from different economic backgrounds using a literature review method. A systematic review of various sources, such as books, scientific journals, articles, and relevant policy documents, was conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the practices, challenges, and strategies of inclusive education in various contexts. The results of the literature study indicate that inclusive education contributes to expanding access to quality education for all students, especially economically disadvantaged groups, through adaptive policies such as fee subsidies, exemption from infaq (voluntary donations), and the use of affordable educational technology. However, its effectiveness is still influenced by factors such as limited teacher competence, uneven infrastructure, and social and cultural resistance in the school environment. Thus, inclusive education supported by progressive policies, continuous teacher training, and multi-stakeholder collaboration can be an effective strategy to narrow learning gaps and promote educational equity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of digital-based student management on the development of students' interests and talents through a literature review. Digitalisation in student management facilitates data management, accelerates communication between schools, students, and parents, and expands students' access to various self-development programmes. The results of the study indicate that the application of information technology in student management can improve administrative efficiency, monitoring transparency, and student participation in extracurricular activities. In addition, a data-driven approach enables schools to design more targeted and measurable interest and talent development programmes. However, challenges such as the digital divide and limited technological competence among educators still need to be addressed. Overall, digital-based student management has great potential to support the optimal development of students' interests and talents, provided that it is supported by continuous evaluation and collaboration among all relevant parties.

Abstract

This research aims to examine various strategies for strengthening character education in schools through the implementation of the Independent Learning Curriculum. Character education is an urgent need amidst the challenges of globalization, technological advances, and moral degradation that occurs among students. The Merdeka Curriculum is presented as an educational policy that offers a more holistic, flexible and contextual learning approach, thus providing great opportunities for building student character. The method used in this research is a literature review (library research) by analyzing various sources such as scientific journal articles, academic books, government regulations, and previous research reports. Data analysis techniques were carried out through content analysis and thematic synthesis. The results of the study show that the character strengthening strategy in the Merdeka Curriculum can be carried out through several approaches, including implementing the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5), integrating character values in cross-disciplinary learning, implementing differentiated learning, and using authentic assessment that emphasizes processes and attitudes. Factors supporting the success of this strategy include teacher readiness, availability of resources and training, as well as parent and community support. On the other hand, lack of teacher understanding, limited facilities, and minimal parental involvement are obstacles that need to be overcome. This study concludes that strengthening character education through the Independent Curriculum requires synergy of all educational elements so that implementation can be effective and sustainable.

Abstract

This research aims to examine in depth how a multicultural approach in the school curriculum contributes to increasing students' social awareness and intercultural tolerance. The method used is a literature review by analyzing various scientific sources such as journal articles, books, theses and relevant educational policy documents. The results of the study show that the integration of multicultural values in curriculum design, learning practices, and the active role of teachers can encourage a broader understanding of cultural diversity, strengthen social empathy, and form tolerant attitudes in the school environment. Strategies such as the use of cultural narratives, interreligious dialogue, and contextual learning have proven effective in cultivating students' social sensitivity. However, challenges such as lack of teacher training, limited inclusive teaching materials, and resistance from the external environment are obstacles in implementing multicultural education as a whole. Thus, multicultural education has a strategic role in building a more inclusive and harmonious society, and needs to be systematically integrated into educational policies and practices at all levels.
