Abstract

This study examines the role of mosque-based syariah empowerment in strengthening wasathiyyah and promoting social harmony in Rasau Jaya, a multicultural district in West Kalimantan. The research is motivated by the limited internalization of Islamic moderation among mosque communities, despite the high level of religious activity. The study aims to analyze how mosque-centered interventions grounded in Islamic legal principles can enhance community understanding and practice of wasathiyyah. Using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) design integrated with the frameworks of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, fiqh al-ta‘āyush, and fiqh al-ikhtilāf, the research involved mosque administrators, community figures, and youth through workshops, focus group discussions, leadership training, and photovoice documentation. The findings demonstrate that the program effectively increased participants’ comprehension of syariah-based moderation by 65%, improved interfaith communication, and empowered mosque leaders to initiate inclusive religious activities. The study concludes that mosque-based syariah empowerment provides a relevant and impactful model for operationalizing Islamic moderation and fostering sustainable social cohesion in diverse communities.

Abstract

Family-based daʿwah represents a foundational yet undertheorized dimension of Islamic mission studies. This study investigates how Muslim families in urban Bandung, Indonesia, implement family-based daʿwah to cultivate a marhamah (compassion-based) ecosystem through their everyday practices. Employing Alfred Schutz's interpretive phenomenological analysis, this study conducted in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation with twenty purposively selected Muslim families meeting criteria of marriage duration, child-rearing stage, and active daʿwah engagement. Four interrelated themes emerged: (1) internalization of Qur'anic values in domestic contexts; (2) affective function as the relational infrastructure of marhamah; (3) dialogic and exemplary daʿwah communication practices; and (4) the social radiation of family-formed compassion values into the wider community. These findings challenge prior studies that position the family primarily as a normative unit of Islamic law, by demonstrating that the family operates as a dynamic agent of daʿwah-driven social transformation. The study introduces the 'marhamah ecosystem' as a new analytical framework integrating Islamic theology, communication theory, and family sociology within the field of daʿwah studies ('ilm al-da'wah). Practical implications are drawn for Muslim family counselling, Islamic education policy, and community daʿwah programming in rapidly urbanizing Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the global evolution of scholarly discussions on the integration of local culture into Islamic da‘wah and communication practices through a bibliometric and network analysis approach. The research employs a bibliometric study design using 60 Scopus-indexed publications from 2009–2025 as the primary data source. The data were analyzed through co-authorship, co-occurrence, and network visualization techniques to identify thematic trends, collaboration patterns, and conceptual developments in culturally adaptive Islamic communication studies. These patterns reflect a significant increase in publications after 2020, with Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom emerging as the leading contributors and international collaboration hubs. The network analysis identifies five major thematic clusters: cultural adaptation in da‘wah, digital Islamic communication, local wisdom and religious identity, transnational Islamic movements, and hybrid cultural expressions. The study further demonstrates a growing transnational convergence of culturally adaptive da‘wah strategies across Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In addition, this research introduces the Cultural Adaptation Model of Islamic Communication (CAMI), a conceptual framework explaining how Islamic da‘wah integrates local cultural values and community communication practices while maintaining universal Islamic ethical principles. The study is limited by its reliance on publications indexed exclusively in the Scopus database, which may not fully represent the broader spectrum of global Islamic communication scholarship. Practically, the findings provide a strategic foundation for developing contextual, inclusive, and culturally responsive da‘wah models in multicultural societies. The originality of this study lies in its integration of global bibliometric analysis with the development of the CAMI framework within the field of Islamic communication and da‘wah studies.

Abstract

Productive waqf has gained increasing recognition as a strategic instrument within the Islamic social finance ecosystem, creating growing demands for governance systems that are both professionally managed and ethically grounded. While previous studies have largely examined waqf governance through structural, regulatory, and performance-oriented perspectives, limited attention has been given to how nazhir religiosity shapes governance practices in everyday organizational settings. This study addresses this gap by investigating how nazhir religiosity functions as an operational governance mechanism influencing accountability and governance practices in productive waqf institutions. Using an interpretive qualitative approach and a case study strategy, the research was conducted at Sinergi Foundation, an Indonesian Islamic philanthropic institution actively managing productive waqf programs. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with waqf managers, donors, and beneficiaries, complemented by institutional document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that nazhir religiosity operates through four interconnected governance mechanisms: ethical decision filtering, stewardship-oriented governance, multidimensional accountability construction, and the negotiation between religious values and institutional demands. Religiosity functions not merely as a personal belief system but as a source of managerial rationality that shapes strategic decision-making, risk assessment, resource allocation, and accountability practices. Accountability is understood as a multidimensional responsibility encompassing financial, social, ethical, and spiritual obligations toward donors, beneficiaries, society, and God. The study further finds that the influence of religiosity is mediated by organizational capacity, professional management requirements, and regulatory pressures, creating ongoing tensions between managerial efficiency and broader social objectives. This study contributes to waqf governance literature by reconceptualizing religiosity as an embedded governance mechanism and extends values-based leadership and Islamic accountability scholarship within faith-based organizations. The findings also provide practical insights for strengthening governance, accountability, and sustainability in productive waqf institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how algorithmic aesthetics shape the production of halal-oriented digital spaces in street-food promotion across social media platforms and to explain how halal becomes visible, recognizable, and socially trusted within algorithmically mediated environments. Employing a qualitative approach, the research integrates virtual ethnography and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze 48 digital content items, 1,284 audience comments, 116 captions and metadata entries, 90 visual screenshots, and in-depth interviews with street-food vendors featured on Instagram, Facebook Reels, and YouTube. The findings reveal that halal no longer operates solely as a legal category verified through formal certification but is produced through the interaction of three interconnected dimensions: spatial practices, representations of space, and representational spaces. Within this process, visual cleanliness, transparency, ethical labor, and Islamic moral cues function as communicative resources through which audiences construct trust and recognize halal legitimacy. The study further demonstrates that platform logics, visual aesthetics, and algorithmic mechanisms influence which representations of halal achieve greater visibility and public recognition. This research is limited to a selected number of social media accounts and platforms within the Indonesian context and therefore may not fully capture variations across different cultural and technological settings. Practically, the findings provide insights for food entrepreneurs, digital content creators, and policymakers regarding the growing importance of digital visibility in shaping public trust and perceptions of halal authenticity. The originality of this study lies in the development of the concept of Algorithmic Halal Visibility, which explains how religious legitimacy is produced through the interaction of everyday practices, symbolic representations, audience participation, and platform infrastructures in contemporary digital societies.

Abstract

This research aims to find the values in the story of the Prophet Moses and relate them to the concept of GCED and character education in the 21st century. This research is qualitative research that analyzes the story of the Prophet Moses in Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka. The research method used is thematic interpretation with content analysis and source triangulation to ensure the validity of the data. Primary data includes verses of the Qur'an and Tafsir Al-Azhar, while secondary data includes academic literature related to GCED, 21st century character education, and another relevant research. The results of the study show that the story of the Prophet Moses in Tafsir Al-Azhar displays the integration of prophetic leadership values, character education, and universal humanitarian principles that are in harmony with 21st century competence. These values include the cognitive domain (rational and reflective thinking in decision-making), the socio-emotional domain (empathy, self-awareness, and emotional control), and the behavioral domain (real action in upholding justice and humanity). The integration of the interpretation of the Qur'an with the GCED framework shows that Islamic education is not only oriented to the transfer of knowledge, but also to the formation of a global character that is ethical, adaptive, and caring for humanity. The story of the Prophet Moses is relevant as the foundation for developing 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and adaptability. This research provides a conceptual and practical foundation for the development of a curriculum and learning strategies based on Islamic values that can connect character education with global and contextual learning.

Abstract

This study examines the reform of modern Islamic education within the context of Western hegemony through the educational thought of Muhammad Abduh and Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, as well as the responses of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama toward colonial education in Indonesia. The nineteenth century marked a period of multidimensional crisis in the Muslim world due to political decline, intellectual stagnation, and the expansion of Western colonialism, which introduced not only political domination but also epistemological hegemony through modern secular education systems. In this context, Islamic reformist thinkers emerged to reconstruct Islamic educational thought as a strategy for civilizational revival. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods with historical and philosophical perspectives. Primary data were obtained from the works and ideas of Al-Afghani and Abduh, while secondary data were collected from reputable national and international academic journals, books, and historical studies related to Islamic educational reform and colonialism. Data were analyzed using content analysis and critical-interpretative approaches to identify the relationship between Islamic educational reform and resistance to Western epistemological domination. The findings reveal that Al-Afghani emphasized Pan-Islamism, political consciousness, and scientific advancement as instruments for resisting Western imperialism, whereas Abduh focused on educational modernization through the integration of reason and revelation, curriculum reform, and the revitalization of Islamic intellectual traditions. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama adapted these reformist ideas differently according to the Indonesian socio-cultural context. Muhammadiyah adopted a modernist educational model integrating religious and general sciences through modern schools, while Nahdlatul Ulama maintained pesantren traditions through adaptive traditionalism and selective modernization. The study concludes that Islamic educational reform in Indonesia represents not a process of Westernization, but rather an epistemological negotiation aimed at preserving Islamic identity while engaging with modern global civilization.

Abstract

The transformation of contemporary Muslim society has significantly affected family resilience, marital stability, and religious awareness within family life. Increasing divorce rates, digital cultural influences, and limited premarital preparedness indicate the urgent need for more adaptive Islamic marriage education. This study aims to analyze the strategic role of da’wah in Islamic marriage education through institutional religious counseling perspectives and to examine how strategic communication and counseling contribute to strengthening family resilience in contemporary Muslim society. The study employs a qualitative approach using a library research design. Data were collected through document analysis of scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and institutional publications related to strategic da’wah, Islamic counseling, communication strategies, and marriage education. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify conceptual patterns and theoretical relationships within the scholarly discourse. The findings reveal that strategic da’wah has transformed Islamic marriage education from a merely normative religious activity into a preventive and transformative educational framework aimed at strengthening emotional maturity, communication ethics, and social responsibility among Muslim communities. The study also demonstrates that participatory communication, adaptive counseling approaches, and institutional educational management significantly influence the effectiveness of Islamic marriage education. Furthermore, digital communication technology encourages religious institutions to reconstruct traditional counseling methods into more innovative and socially responsive educational strategies. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of Manajemen Da’wah scholarship by integrating communication, counseling, and institutional educational perspectives into a unified conceptual framework for Islamic marriage education.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze digital da'wah communication and destination image construction in religious tourism on Lemukutan Island, West Kalimantan, through a digital ethnographic perspective. This research is motivated by the limited studies that connect digital da'wah, User Generated Content (UGC), and the construction of the image of religious tourism destinations in the context of new media culture. The research uses a qualitative approach with digital ethnographic methods through observation of social media TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. The results of the study show that tourists no longer only play the role of tourism consumers, but also as digital da'wah communication actors who actively produce and disseminate religious narratives, spiritual experiences, and destination images through social media. The practice of digital da'wah on Lemukutan Island develops in a participatory manner through the involvement of tourists, religious leaders, and local communities in forming representations of religious tourist destinations on social media. This study also found that social media has a strategic role in strengthening the image of Lemukutan Island as a natural, religious, and authentic tourist destination, but at the same time has the potential to encourage the commodification of religious and cultural symbols due to the logic of digital media virality. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of a conceptual model of digital da'wah communication actors in the study of tourism communication and digital culture. Practically, the results of this study can be a reference for local governments and tourism managers in designing religious tourism communication strategies that are adaptive to the dynamics of social media. This research is limited to the scope of location and number of informants, so further research is needed with a cross-platform approach and comparison between digital religious tourism destinations at the global level.
