Abstract

This study aims to design a conceptual strategy and visual simulation for the use of Augmented Reality (AR) as a medium for wayfinding and cultural education in Kampung Naga, a traditional village in West Java that strictly preserves its cultural heritage. The lack of spatial and cultural information available to visitors, due to local restrictions on digital infrastructure, highlights the need for an innovative approach that respects local customs. Employing a qualitative-critical method through observation and literature review, this research proposes a simulated AR interface design featuring interactive navigation, culturally integrated non-invasive markers, and educational overlays about local architecture and performing arts such as Terbang Gembrung. The results suggest that a context-aware, adaptive, and non-intrusive AR design can enhance the visitor experience while preserving the authenticity of traditional spaces. This study recommends AR integration as an educational and navigational solution for sustainable and culturally respectful heritage tourism development.

Abstract

Sign systems play a role in supporting the convenience, comfort, and experience of visitors in an area, including tourist attractions. Goa Putri Baturaja is a tourist destination in South Sumatra and already has a sign system. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the sign system in the Goa Putri tourist attraction on the convenience and suitability with the installation environment in the area. The approach in this study is the observation and qualitative descriptive method, supported by the analysis of the sign system design. The results of this study indicate that the sign system in Goa Putri Baturaja is still less effective, especially as a direction indicator, and less in accordance with the characteristics of the surrounding environment. Several factors that influence this effectiveness include readability, material selection, placement, and suitability of the design to the surrounding natural context. The findings of this study indicate that it is necessary to improve the design of the sign system that takes into account visual aspects, installation location, materials, and visitor needs to improve overall comfort and tourist experience.

Abstract

Visual cultural artifacts in Indonesia are abundant and spread throughout the region. These objects are visual riches that have not been widely studied. From visual culture researchers who are interested in local graphic design, what is called vernacular graphic design emerged. This research was conducted using a qualitative method of literature study to reveal a basic understanding of visual culture, vernacular design and vernacular graphic design. From the literature that has been collected, it turns out that the study of vernacular graphic design focuses on vernacular typography. There has been no study of vernacular illustration or photography, vernacular color composition and vernacular layout or further on the concept of vernacular design according to its creator. This gap is an opportunity for visual culture researchers to dig deeper into the concept of non-typographic vernacular graphic design elements.

Abstract

Batik is an invaluable cultural heritage of Indonesia, with each region offering distinct motifs. Among these is the Mo' Ramo' motif, a hallmark of Pamekasan, Madura, symbolizing strength and resolve. Despite its historical and philosophical significance, the production of Mo' Ramo' batik has declined due to time-intensive crafting processes and high costs, risking its extinction. This study aims to preserve the Mo' Ramo' motif through digital innovation by developing a font inspired by its unique patterns. The Design Thinking framework, encompassing empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test phases, was employed to ensure user-centered outcomes. The results showcase a font named "Akarramo," which seamlessly integrates Mo' Ramo' elements while maintaining legibility and visual appeal. Testing indicated its potential for use in promotional materials and as a tool for cultural preservation. This innovative approach demonstrates the viability of typography as a medium for safeguarding traditional art forms while enhancing public awareness of Pamekasan's cultural heritage. The findings provide a foundation for further explorations of batik-based typography, fostering a sustainable fusion of tradition and modernity.

Abstract

Berkala-Kala is a hijab brand that has been operating online since its inception in 2020, targeting Muslim women aged 18 to 35 from the Gen Z and Millennial segments. Despite offering a variety of high-quality pashmina products, the brand faced challenges such as declining customer engagement, limited product try on experiences due to its online-only nature, and increasing competition in the hijab industry. To address these issues, this design project proposed an interactive hijab catalog that combines augmented reality (AR) technology and physical fabric samples. This project was developed using the design thinking method, which consists of five stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data was collected through interviews and observations, followed by user testing with five respondents using the System Usability Scale (SUS) method. The final prototype integrated two main interactive features: real fabric samples attached to each page of the catalog and an AR-based virtual try-on experience accessible via QR code. These features were designed to simulate the tactile and visual experience of shopping in-store. The SUS evaluation resulted in a score of 88.5, which is categorized as "very good", indicating a high level of usability and user satisfaction. Overall, the interactive catalog effectively enhances the user experience, provides innovative product engagement, and supports Berkala-Kala in maintaining competitiveness in the ever-growing hijab market.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indonesian film industry experienced a significant decline in both the number of productions and revenue. One of the main contributing factors was the shift of audience behaviors, as viewers turned to video on -demand services, such as Netflix, which making them more selective and critical of audiovisual contents. Consequently, the competition to attract audience interest become more challenging and trailer plays a crucial role for influencing audience decisions to watch a film or series. In the trailer for the first season of Bridgerton, which incorporated a specific discourse on gender stereotyping that resonates with social issues nowadays, contributing to the series’ record-breaking viewership hours. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to analyse the influence of promotion media, which is trailer containing particular discourses, in attracting audience interest to watch the series. This research will apply a qualitative method, utilizing data collection techniques, which are interviews and observations. The data obtained will be analyzed using the framing analysis approach developed by William Gamson and Andre Modigliani to uncover the meanings behind scenes in the trailer related to gender stereotyping discourse.
