Abstract

This qualitative study explores EFL students’ experiences of reading-based oral presentations in a university speaking course. While integrated-skills instruction is widely recommended, limited research has examined how learners perceive the process of transforming written texts into oral presentations. Using a descriptive–interpretive approach, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and students’ reflective responses. The data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns in learners’ experiences. The findings reveal four main themes: reading as cognitive support for speaking, increased confidence through content familiarity, gradual negotiation of speaking anxiety, and ownership in meaning construction. The results suggest that reading-based oral presentations function as a scaffolded bridge between comprehension and production, enabling students to organize ideas and articulate interpretations more confidently. Beyond performance outcomes, the activity fostered meaningful engagement and interpretive speaking practices. This study contributes to integrated-skills pedagogy by highlighting learners’ lived experiences in EFL contexts and offers pedagogical insights for designing supportive speaking activities grounded in reading tasks.

Abstract

This research explores the ways in which drama appreciation can improve students’ empathy and cultural awareness within educational contexts. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, the study examines chosen conversations from The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare. The research emphasizes how misinterpretations and breaches of conversational maxims enable students to examine various viewpoints, feelings, and cultural backgrounds. The results indicate that drama offers significant learning opportunities that promote students' abilities to understand different perspectives and emotions. Furthermore, drama introduces students to various cultural norms and communication methods, enhancing their awareness of cultural variations. This research emphasizes the importance of drama as a powerful educational instrument by linking theoretical frameworks like pragmatics, emotional intelligence, and experiential learning with practical analysis. Consequently, it is suggested that drama appreciation serves as a method to enhance students' emotional and cultural growth in educational settings

Abstract

The growth of social media has significantly impacted language use among university students when communicating digitally. This study aims to (1) describe how students at Universitas Negeri Medan utilize standard and non-standard Indonesian in their daily digital interactions, (2) identify deviations from standard Indonesian language rules, and (3) explore students' perspectives regarding the impact of social media on their mastery of standard language. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in this study. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires from five active students across various majors and analyzed thematically. The results indicate that students consciously choose standard Indonesian for formal and academic contexts (e.g., communicating with lecturers, completing assignments), whereas non-standard language or slang is more frequently used in informal interactions on WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok. Common deviations include non-standard abbreviations, slang, English code-mixing, and typographical errors, which are mostly driven by habit, social environment, and the need for rapid communication. Despite these deviations, students recognize the importance of using standard Indonesian to maintain professionalism, politeness, and national identity. They also implement strategies such as reading academic texts and practicing formal language to maintain their standard language skills. This study contributes to the sociolinguistic discussion regarding language change in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to develop structured song-based learning materials for English language teaching for grade 11 students of SMA Swasta RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. Utilizing a Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model, this study integrates songs as authentic learning media into English language teaching. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires and needs analysis involving one English teacher and seventeen students. The findings showed that teachers face difficulties in finding age-appropriate songs, connecting songs with the curriculum, and designing structured activities. Teachers need ready-to-use worksheets, curated song recommendations, and practical teaching guidelines. Students reported difficulties with unfamiliar vocabulary, unclear pronunciation, and fast song tempo. Students prefer pop music with clear lyrics and interactive activities such as karaoke and gap-fill exercises. Based on these findings, a prototype of structured song-based learning materials was developed. The prototype consists of a teacher's guide, student worksheets, and curated song selections. Due to time limits, this study was limited to the needs analysis and design stages of the ADDIE model. The implications suggest that song-based learning materials should include vocabulary support, structured activities that move from listening to speaking tasks, clear guidance for teachers, and song selections that match student preferences while remaining appropriate for classroom use. Future research should conduct expert validation, classroom trials, and effective studies to assess the quality of the prototype.

Abstract

Code-switching is a common phenomenon in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms where teachers and students alternate between English and Indonesian to support communication and learning. This study investigates the types and functions of code-switching in classroom interaction at SMPN 10 Medan. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of code-switching based on Poplack’s (1980) classification and to analyze its functions based on Appel and Muysken’s (1987) framework. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The data were collected through a 25-minute classroom observation, transcription of teacher-student interaction, and semi-structured interviews with the English teacher. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s (2014) interactive model, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that two types of code-switching are dominant in classroom interaction: inter-sentential switching (76.9%) and intra-sentential switching (23.1%), while tag switching appears minimally. Inter-sentential switching is mainly used for clarification of instructions and emotional support, while intra-sentential switching occurs in grammar-related explanations and lexical insertion. In terms of function, referential function is the most dominant, followed by directive, expressive, phatic, and metalinguistic functions. These functions indicate that code-switching is primarily used to facilitate comprehension, manage classroom interaction, reduce student anxiety, and explain grammatical concepts. The results suggest that code-switching is not a language deficiency but a purposeful pedagogical strategy that supports effective teaching and learning in EFL classrooms, particularly at the junior high school level where learners still require linguistic assistance.

Abstract

This study explores EFL sixth-semester students’ attitudes toward online learning in English classes at the Faculty of Language and Arts, State University of Medan, and identifies the factors influencing those attitudes. Online learning has become an important part of higher education, yet EFL students often experience both benefits and challenges in digital learning environments, particularly in relation to interaction, motivation, and language practice. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design involving three participants for semi-structured interviews and 20 participants for an online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive model through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that students’ attitudes toward online learning were shaped by cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. Cognitively, most students doubted the effectiveness of online English classes in improving proficiency, although they acknowledged some benefits in speaking practice and vocabulary exposure. Affectively, students generally showed positive feelings such as enthusiasm and comfort, but these emotions were strongly influenced by class atmosphere and interaction. Behaviorally, most students were active in attending classes and seeking additional learning resources, although participation sometimes depended on confidence and workload. The influencing factors were divided into internal factors, such as motivation, self-confidence, and previous learning experience, and external factors, such as internet connectivity, teaching methods, and the online learning platform. Overall, the study reveals that students’ attitudes toward online learning are complex and shaped by both personal and contextual conditions.
