Abstract

This study aims to determine the empowerment of local communities through food and beverage businesses at the Palo Naga tourist attraction, the effect of selling traditional food and drinks on increasing visitor interest in coming to the Palo Naga tourist attraction. This research is a quantitative descriptive research and the samples of this research are several food and beverage sellers and visitors of the Paloh Naga tourist attraction. The results of this study are that the management of the Palo Naga tourist attraction is very serious to guide the community, especially housewives in supporting the Palo Naga tourist attraction to sell in the tourist attraction area. All outlets are provided by the manager to be used as a place to sell free of charge and all sellers involved are from local residents. To improve the skills of these women sellers, the management often organizes training, both training on food processing and making souvenirs, in collaboration with some agencies by providing vocational homes as places for the training. The existence of the Palo Naga tourist attraction which utilizes the community's paddy fields besides having a cool natural and village feel as a visitor attraction, turns out to be a reason to enjoy the atmosphere and traditional food at this tourist attraction has a very strong influence on visitors coming. Most of the food and drinks are rather difficult to find in the city and the transaction system is also quite interesting where payments to sellers are not in cash, but using a medium of exchange made of wood.

Abstract

Meat Village, located in Tampahan sub-district, Toba regency, North Sumatra, is the center for making ulos weaving type of Ragi Hotang. Almost every house in Meat village is weaving, only a few Meat villagers process fish by frying it and marketing it out of town. The large number of living habitats of glass-glass fish causes a decrease in the population of pora-pora. The residents in the meat village and its surroundings cannot process the glass fish because it has hard thorns. For this reason, the author examines whether pora-pora fish can be processed and used as souvenirs typical of Toba Regency using qualitative research methods. And based on the results of experiments that have been done, glass fish can be processed into chips with the right standard recipes and procedures. Glass fish chips have a savory taste and crumbly texture. This glass fish can be consumed by residents, and can be marketed in Toba district. It can be as a snack or souvenir by visitors, considering that this type of snack can last a long time.

Abstract

In fostering sustainable growth for many developing nations, there is an urgent need to re-engineer the industrial sector towards one that promotes value addition, particularly on the industrial base. Zambia and South Africa’s major economic challenges revolve around their persistent economic dependence on copper and gold. Within the context of their broader goals to diversify their economies, Zambia has struggled to reduce its reliance on copper despite various initiatives, while South Africa faces declining gold production and the need to adapt to global sustainability trends and changing resource demands. Using a dynamic Panel ARDL model, this study thus analysed the effects of industrialization on sustainable emission decoupled economic growth using data from 1970-2022 for South Africa and Zambia. Our results showed that the metallic, food and beverages, paper, and wood products industries significantly affected emission decoupled economic growth in South Africa, while only the fabricated metal and wood industry significantly fostered economic growth in Zambia in the short run. In the long run, for both countries, only the paper and non-metallic industries affected economic growth significantly. The study concluded that while extractive and high emitting industrial sectors are the most feasible in the case of most African countries; to be able to accelerate sustainable economic growth through the industrial sector, these nations will have to re-engineer their industrial sectors towards a more commodity-aligned approach that puts value addition and emission reduction through regional value chains at the pinnacle of policy and national development strategies.

Abstract

This study examined the performance of traditional and non-traditional exports and further analyzed the factors that determine their performance in Zambia using a time series analysis (1960 and 2021). With the aid of the Vector error correction model, the study found that increases in the Real GDP, and Foreign Direct Investment of Zambia positively and significantly affected the volume of exports. In the analysis of aggregate exports, the non-significance of the relative price elasticity (Foreign Exchange rate) suggests that trade policies that concentrate overly on expenditure switching such as tariff and non-tariff restrictions or devaluations do not effectively assist trade policy reform efforts. The study thus recommends the need to promote inclusiveness, diversification and growth in investment towards the production of export commodities, particularly through the Multi-Facility Economic Zones by providing incentives to expand export diversification and growth at the local level through revising the Fiscal and non-Fiscal incentive thresholds in MFEZs to reflect the financing capacity of local investors.

Abstract

The objectives of this research include exploring the potential of local culinary as a tourist attraction in four Destination Tourist Objects (ODTW), namely Haranggaol, BIS, Sibaganding, and Parapat in Simalungun Regency, Indonesia. The interconnection between food and tourism is currently growing. This research is an ethnographic study to support the acceleration of culinary tourism development in Simalungun Regency. Data were collected through observation and ethnographic interviews with 3 informants, namely key informants, main informants, and supporting informants. Using selective observation and contrasting questions, several contrasting dimensions among the residents of a domain can be identified (for example, we will know that the main foods are "dayok nabinatur" and "saksang," while desserts are found in "lapet boras" and "marlakop-lakop," and perhaps many more contrasts between main dishes and desserts). Such contrasting issues are the focus of componential analysis. Categorization of culinary based on local wisdom can be seen from the following elements: 1) culinary naming in Batak language; 2) cultural themes behind culinary presentation; 3) basic food ingredients; 4) local spices/herbs; and 5) the cooking process of local culinary. The potential of local culinary wisdom and culinary tourism based on local wisdom is worthy of development into a new tourist attraction, namely culinary tourism, to attract tourists.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the interest of academics in the field of entrepreneurship and business towards wellbeing. In particular, young people are very vulnerable to poverty at the global level, so entrepreneurship among youth is a major focus. Successful entrepreneurship requires mental and physical well-being to start a business. This study aims to explore psychological readiness and well-being in achieving entrepreneurship among youth in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa. This research was conducted by selecting 150 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) run by young entrepreneurs using a convenient sampling technique. The types of MSMEs studied include furniture makers, pubs, restaurants, spas, hair salons and traders. Data was collected through a questionnaire prepared with a four-point Likert Scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages. The results show that most young Nigerians have many abilities, but fear of failure, deception, and reluctance to show weakness prevent them from trying. Youth also face pressure from society that expects them to be better, which encourages them to set up businesses. This research concludes that entrepreneurship training for youth can increase psychological resilience and mental readiness. Therefore, it is important for young entrepreneurs in Nigeria and Africa to get psychological preparation, as psychological well-being contributes to physical health. This research recommends that the environment in which youth develop and implement entrepreneurial ventures be made more welcoming and supportive, with government policies that attract adequate attention and participation.
