Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed a significant shift from traditional face-to-face classes to online learning, profoundly impacting educational practices. This study employs a descriptive qualitative case study approach to investigate the implementation of online learning at MAN 2 Kota Kediri. Data were collected through questionnaires and structured interviews with English teachers to examine their challenges and experiences during this transition. Findings indicate that teachers effectively utilized the discovery learning model, which comprises three key stages: preliminary activities, core activities, and closing activities. Each stage includes critical steps such as stimulation, problem identification, data collection, data processing, and generalization. The results highlight the importance of structured online learning frameworks in enhancing educational outcomes during challenging times. Additionally, the study underscores the role of information technology in education and the necessity for planned, effective human resource development to boost productivity and community welfare. This research contributes valuable insights into the adaptation of teaching methodologies in the face of unprecedented challenges, emphasizing the effectiveness of active learning strategies in an online context.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the EGRA (Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application) technique in teaching descriptive text to improve students' writing skills. Conducted using a descriptive qualitative design, the research involved observations and interviews with both teachers and students. Data were analyzed and validated through cross-checking and comparison. The findings reveal that the teacher effectively utilized the four stages of the EGRA technique. During the Experience stage, students were asked questions related to descriptive text. In the Generalization stage, students worked in groups. In the Reinforcement stage, groups presented their mind maps. In the Application stage, students completed individual assignments. While all students actively participated in class, some struggled with individual tasks and text analysis. To address these challenges, the teacher employed various strategies such as task-based activities, group work, concept mapping, exercises, authentic resources, and class management techniques, including reducing scores as a form of punishment.

Abstract

After Queen Elizabeth II passed away, Prince Charles was officially crowned King Charles III, the King of England and the Commonwealth countries. In his first public speech as a king, delivered at Buckingham Palace on September 9, 2022, he expressed deep sorrow over the Queen’s passing, paid tribute to her lifetime of service as a queen, and pledged his dedication to the nation and the Commonwealth. This speech serves as a significant moment, marking the transition of leadership and strengthening the monarchy’s role in modern society. This study's aim is to find out the types of illocutionary acts in King Charles III’s first speech by using Searle’s Speech Acts Theory. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design. The study examines the official speech transcript to identify and categorize the speech acts used. The findings reveal 43 instances of illocutionary acts, which are divided into four categories: assertive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. These speech acts provide multiple functions, including expressing personal emotions, affirming commitments to the people, and reinforcing the monarchy's authority. The results of this study highlight the strategic use of language in royal speech. Understanding the illocutionary aspects of King Charles III’s speech contributes to a broader analysis of political communication and pragmatics in leadership discourse.

Abstract

Utilizing appropriate language learning strategy may influence student’s learning process. In fact, many students do not employ the right learning strategy. This study aims to investigate students’ learning strategy used by students of English Department of IAIN Kediri. The design used in this research is a quantitative descriptive design with comparative study method and the research involved 120 students, from 4th and 6th semester of English Department IAIN Kediri. The data were collected using the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire, Version 7.0 by Rebecca L. Oxford, which includes 50 items. The findings reveal that both 4th and 6th semester students most commonly used metacognitive strategies, while compensation strategies were the least used. Overall, 4th semester students were high users of learning strategies (M = 3.53), while 6th semester students were moderate users (M = 3.48). Further analysis by major showed variations: in tourism and translation majors, metacognitive strategies were most used and compensation strategies least used. In literature majors, metacognitive strategies remained the most used, but the least used strategies differed—memory strategies for 4th semester students and social strategies for 6th semester students. These results indicate significant differences in strategy use across majors, leading to the conclusion that the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted—there are differences in language learning strategies among tourism, translation, and literature students at IAIN Kediri.

Abstract

This study explores the implied meanings embedded in the visual elements such as images, colors, and text, on the covers of English textbooks used in Primary and Secondary schools through the lens of Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). It further examines how these visual components reflect and align with the content of the textbooks. Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar framework is applied to analyze the representational, interactive, and compositional meanings, while Gee’s seven building tasks of language are used to interpret the linguistic features and how they construct identities, relationships, and ideologies. Data were collected through document analysis, following the procedures of Yildirim and Şimşek: identifying relevant textbooks, validating their authenticity, and interpreting both explicit and implicit meanings. The findings reveal that the visual designs on textbook covers are not merely decorative but serve a communicative function. For example, bright color palettes, smiling characters, and playful typography suggest a portrayal of English learning as engaging, child-friendly, and globally relevant. These visual strategies work together to construct a positive learner identity and subtly embed educational values. Overall, the study underscores the importance of textbook covers as multimodal texts that influence meaning-making in educational contexts. The use of visual semiotics provides valuable insights into how English language education is framed through design choices.
