Abstract

Background: Adolescent mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems have reached critical levels globally, emphasizing the need for effective prevention strategies. Objective: This review aims to examine the preventive role of parent-child communication in adolescent mental health, particularly from a family counseling perspective. It synthesizes recent empirical evidence (2021-2025) to understand how positive communication patterns influence mental health outcomes in adolescents.Method: The review draws from 45 contemporary studies, examining the role of parent-child communication in preventing adolescent psychopathology. It includes research across diverse cultural contexts, such as China, Uganda, and Native American communities, and considers both face-to-face and digital communication. Specific counseling interventions focusing on communication enhancement were also explored, with a particular focus on emotion-focused approaches, mindful parenting, and attachment-based strategies.Findings and Implications: Positive communication patterns, characterized by warmth, emotional validation, active listening, and conflict management, were found to significantly reduce risks of depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems, while promoting life satisfaction, coping abilities, and resilience. Parent-child communication also plays a crucial role in emotion regulation, coping strategies, and self-compassion development. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of communication, as it buffered against pandemic-related psychological distress and facilitated posttraumatic growth. While communication expressions vary across cultures, emotional attunement and respectful dialogue are universal protective factors. Conclusion: The rise of digital communication introduces challenges but highlights that quality communication across both face-to-face and online channels is essential.

Abstract

College student mental health has reached crisis proportions, with anxiety disorders now affecting approximately 30-40% of students globally. The need for effective interventions to address anxiety in higher education settings is urgent. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of peer counseling interventions in reducing anxiety levels among college students over an 8-week intervention period, using a pretest-posttest design. A single-group pretest-posttest design was used, with 85 college students exhibiting elevated anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory scores > 16). The students participated in structured peer counseling sessions twice weekly. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) at baseline and post-intervention. The results demonstrated statistically significant reductions in anxiety scores from pretest (M=24.6, SD=6.2) to posttest (M=16.3, SD=5.8), t(84)=12.45, p<.001, d=1.35, indicating a large effect size. Qualitative feedback revealed high participant satisfaction with the accessibility, relatability, and non-judgmental atmosphere of peer support. Peer counseling is an effective, cost-efficient complement to professional mental health services in higher education settings, particularly for addressing mild to moderate anxiety. Implications for campus mental health programming and recommendations for peer counselor training are discussed.

Abstract

Background: Quarter-life crisis among Muslim young adults represents a complex developmental challenge characterized by career uncertainty, identity confusion, and existential anxiety. Conventional secular career counseling inadequately addresses this phenomenon due to its neglect of spiritual dimensions that are central to Islamic identity and meaning-making processes. Objective: This study aimed to develop and examine an integrative career counseling framework that combines logotherapy's meaning-centered principles with Islamic spiritual guidance to address quarter-life crisis among Muslim young adults.Method: Employing interpretative phenomenological analysis, this investigation examined twenty-two Muslim young adults aged 22–32 years who completed 6–8 individual counseling sessions. Data were collected through recorded sessions, reflective journals, and post-intervention interviews, generating 1,847 pages of transcripts analyzed using NVivo software.Findings and Implications: The phenomenological analysis revealed five superordinate themes: existential awakening through spiritual reconnection, liberation from materialistic success paradigms, meaning-centered career reconstruction, integration of professional and spiritual identities, and empowerment through existential choice. These themes demonstrate that spiritual reconnection serves as a foundational catalyst, enabling comprehensive career clarity and identity coherence. Conclusion: This research demonstrates that effective career counseling for Muslim young adults necessitates the explicit integration of meaning-centered psychological approaches with Islamic spiritual guidance, providing validated protocols for culturally responsive counseling practice and theoretical foundations for future research examining spiritually integrated interventions across diverse religious populations.

Abstract

Background: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) significantly impairs vocational functioning in young adults, disrupting career development during critical establishment periods. Despite IGD's recognized clinical significance, vocational rehabilitation remains neglected in symptom-focused treatment approaches, creating a critical gap in comprehensive care for affected individuals. Objective: This study examines the effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation counseling using career guidance approaches for young adults recovering from IGD.Method: Twelve participants aged 21-28 years completed a structured 12-session intervention encompassing career assessment, skill mapping, graduated work exposure, and recovery integration. Data collection included validated career assessments, session documentation, semi-structured interviews, and six-month follow-ups, analyzed through within-case and cross-case thematic synthesis.Findings and Implications: Five interconnected domains emerged from the analysis: vocational identity reconstruction, skill recognition and confidence building, graduated exposure and behavioral activation, recovery-career integration, and social-environmental facilitation. Participants demonstrated substantial improvements in career decision-making self-efficacy, vocational identity clarity, and work readiness, with 75% maintaining gains at six-month follow-up and nearly half achieving employment or educational enrollment. These findings suggest that integrated vocational rehabilitation addressing both career development and recovery maintenance produces meaningful functional outcomes while supporting sustained recovery. Conclusion: This research establishes vocational rehabilitation as an essential component of comprehensive IGD treatment. The findings inform clinical practice, program development, and policy initiatives supporting young adults' successful transition to productive occupational roles, highlighting the necessity of incorporating vocational dimensions into standard IGD intervention frameworks.

Abstract

Background: The Pemberdayaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (PKK) program serves as a critical community-based empowerment mechanism in Indonesia, yet its implementation varies significantly across different local contexts. Understanding these contextual variations is essential for optimizing family-centered development strategies and strengthening local governance systems. Objective: This study aims to examine the implementation of the PKK program across three distinct local settings—Minahasa Regency (North Sulawesi), Serang City (Banten), and Cibinuang Village in Kuningan Regency (West Java)—to understand how PKK functions as a community-based empowerment initiative under diverse social and institutional conditions.Method: A qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis across the three research sites.Findings and Implications: The study reveals that PKK program success is strongly determined by four key factors: local government support, cadre capacity, community participation levels, and structured data-driven planning mechanisms. Minahasa Regency demonstrates robust institutional support and well-structured program execution. Serang City shows promising organizational reform but encounters challenges in innovation capacity and equitable distribution of resources. Conclusion: PKK plays a strategic role in advancing inclusive, family-centered development in Indonesia. This study provides critical insights for strengthening local governance frameworks and enhancing social empowerment programs through context-sensitive approaches that address institutional capacity, participatory mechanisms, and collaborative governance structures.

Abstract

Background: The development of social concern among young generations faces serious challenges due to individualism, digital isolation, and declining empathy. These issues necessitate systematic interventions to cultivate prosocial values and behaviors among school-age adolescents. Objective: This research aims to develop and implement the Bimbingan Remaja Usia Sekolah (BRUS) program as a systematic framework for building social concern among school-age adolescents through an integrated guidance approach.Method: The study employed a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach involving 28 adolescent participants aged 13-18 years, 9 program facilitators, and 6 school personnel across six secondary schools. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation, and document analysis, then analyzed using a thematic analysis approach.Findings and Implications: Results demonstrated that the 16-week BRUS program successfully enhanced social concern across cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions significantly. Participants showed increased frequency in volunteering activities (350%), informal helping behaviors (280%), and social issue advocacy (420%) compared to pre-program baselines. Three-month follow-up data indicated that 75% of participants maintained significantly elevated levels of prosocial engagement. The BRUS program provides theoretical contributions to adolescent character development and offers practical instruments for educators, counselors, and policymakers to integrate social concern development into school-based educational systems. Conclusion: The BRUS program demonstrates effectiveness in cultivating social concern among adolescents, ultimately contributing to developing socially responsible and empathetic young generations.

Abstract

Background: Traditional Indonesian communities maintain indigenous counseling practices rooted in local wisdom that prioritize collective harmony and spiritual wellbeing. These healing systems remain underexplored in academic literature, where Western therapeutic assumptions emphasizing individual psychology, confidentiality, and secular approaches dominate. Objective: This study explores lived experiences of traditional counseling based on local wisdom and examines its role in strengthening social relations within Kampung Naga, West Java, Indonesia.Method: A phenomenological study using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was conducted with twelve participants who experienced traditional counseling addressing social relationship challenges.Findings and Implications: Analysis revealed five superordinate themes representing interconnected mechanisms through which traditional counseling strengthens social relations. The first demonstrates cultural embeddedness through Sundanese cosmology, ritual practices, and Islamic-indigenous syncretism. The second encompasses relational mechanisms including conflict mediation, empathy cultivation, reciprocity restoration, and social identity strengthening. Traditional counseling operates from a holistic, collectivist framework prioritizing community harmony, spiritual wellbeing, and relational restoration over individual psychological adjustment. Findings offer practical implications for mental health professionals by validating indigenous healing systems as legitimate therapeutic alternatives. Conclusion: This research challenges Western therapeutic assumptions about confidentiality and secular approaches while contributing to culturally responsive counseling models that authentically integrate local wisdom with contemporary practice. Findings support decolonizing counseling theory by demonstrating indigenous healing systems' effectiveness in maintaining social cohesion and spiritual wellbeing within traditional communities.

Abstract

Background: Social guidance practices play a crucial role in fostering community collaboration for sustainable development. However, traditional approaches often fail to address the complex, dynamic nature of contemporary sustainability challenges. Understanding how transformed social guidance practices can enhance community collaborative capacity and contribute to sustainability outcomes remains underexplored in both theoretical and practical domains. Objective: This research examines the transformation of social guidance practices and their mechanisms in enhancing community collaboration for sustainable development, investigating the dimensions of transformed approaches, their operational mechanisms, and their impact on collaborative capacity and sustainability outcomes across diverse community contexts.Method: Employing a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, the study investigates six purposively selected communities across urban, rural, and peri-urban contexts.Findings and Implications: The findings reveal five distinct dimensions characterizing transformed social guidance approaches: participatory orientation, adaptive learning, asset-based orientation, relational quality, and power-sharing. These transformation dimensions operate through multiple mechanisms—competence development, relationship formation, normative alignment, and institutional anchoring—to enhance collaborative capacity. Structural equation modeling indicates significant direct and mediated effects, with participatory orientation showing a standardized coefficient of 0.41 on collaborative capacity. Conclusion: The study contributes novel theoretical frameworks integrating insights from community development, sustainability science, and participatory governance literature. It generates practical implementation guidelines for development practitioners and policymakers seeking to catalyze community-driven sustainability transitions, demonstrating that transformed social guidance practices significantly enhance both collaborative capacity and measurable sustainability outcomes across diverse community contexts.

Abstract

Background: Communities worldwide are experiencing significant cultural change, challenging their social resilience and traditional support systems. Understanding how local wisdom can be systematically integrated into social guidance mechanisms represents a critical need for culturally grounded approaches to community resilience building. Objective: This study explores how local wisdom can be integrated into social guidance mechanisms to build social resilience in communities experiencing cultural change, identifying the dimensions, integration processes, success factors, and outcomes of such integration.Method: This qualitative study employed an interpretive phenomenological approach across multiple indigenous and traditional communities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation, and document analysis to capture the lived experiences and cultural practices of community members.Findings and Implications: The research identified five fundamental dimensions of local wisdom that contribute to social resilience: traditional ecological knowledge, social organization principles, cultural values, healing practices, and ceremonial traditions. Integration occurs through four primary mechanisms—formal institutionalization, educational programs, community-based initiatives, and digital documentation—with community-led grassroots approaches demonstrating the highest effectiveness. Success depends critically on political-legal recognition, strong traditional institutions, positive socio-cultural dynamics, and community sovereignty over cultural change processes. Local wisdom integration produces significant improvements in social cohesion, adaptive capacity, cultural identity, psychological well-being, and environmental management. Conclusion: Effective resilience building requires deep integration of local wisdom, critical engagement with traditional knowledge, and community control over cultural trajectories. This research contributes practical frameworks for culturally grounded development approaches that honor indigenous knowledge while supporting sustainable adaptation to contemporary challenges.
