Abstract

Background: Character education is a primary objective of Indonesia’s national education system. However, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of religious habituation in strengthening students’ disciplinary character, particularly in vocational schools, remains limited. Objective: This study aims to examine the role of religious habituation as a strategy for strengthening students’ disciplinary character at SMK Darut Taqwa. Method: This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach during the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving seven purposively selected informants. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, while validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. Findings and Implications: The findings indicate that religious habituation activities, including Qur’an recitation, congregational Duha and Dhuhr prayers, collective supplication, and a greeting culture, positively strengthened students’ punctuality, compliance with school regulations, responsibility in completing assignments, and participation in school activities. Teacher role modeling, a supportive religious environment, and strong school–parent collaboration emerged as key enabling factors. Conclusion: Religious habituation is an effective and context-sensitive strategy for fostering disciplinary character in pesantren-based vocational schools and should be systematically integrated into character education programs.

Abstract

The increasing adoption of online learning in higher education has intensified students' interaction with digital technologies. While this transformation provides greater learning flexibility, it also increases cognitive demands that may contribute to digital burnout. Previous studies have predominantly examined this phenomenon using quantitative approaches, leaving students' lived experiences insufficiently explored. Therefore, this study aims to understand students' experiences of digital burnout in online learning through the perspective of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT). A qualitative approach with an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design was employed. Ten active students who had experienced intensive online learning and digital fatigue were purposively selected. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the IPA stages of reading and re-reading, initial noting, emergent themes, theme clustering, and cross-case analysis. The findings revealed five interrelated themes: the complexity of learning materials, the digital burden of the learning environment, the emergence of digital burnout, its academic and psychological consequences, and students' adaptation strategies. Participants described difficulties in understanding learning materials independently, managing multiple digital platforms, and coping with continuous academic information, which gradually led to mental exhaustion, reduced motivation, impaired concentration, procrastination, and emotional distress. From the CLT perspective, these experiences suggest that extraneous cognitive load emerged as the primary source of digital burden, while students adopted time management, digital detox, and social support as adaptive responses. These findings extend qualitative understanding of digital burnout and highlight the importance of designing online learning environments that minimize unnecessary cognitive load while supporting student well-being.

Abstract

The Papajar tradition is a Sundanese local tradition practiced in Cianjur Regency before Ramadan as an expression of gratitude, togetherness, and socio-spiritual preparation. Amid modernization and the increasing shift toward digital communication, maintaining face-to-face cultural interaction and intergenerational transmission has become increasingly important. This study aims to analyze the Papajar tradition as a cultural communication practice and examine its contribution to fostering social cohesion within the community of Cianjur Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review involving community leaders, traditional and religious leaders, village officials, and local residents who actively participate in Papajar activities. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, supported by cultural communication, interpersonal communication, ritual communication, and social capital perspectives. The findings show that Papajar transmits cultural values through the Sundanese language, silaturahim, botram, respect for elders, and collective participation. These practices strengthen interpersonal relationships, reinforce cultural identity, and develop bonding and bridging social capital through trust, solidarity, participation, and social integration. The findings imply that preserving Papajar is important not only for safeguarding local cultural heritage but also for sustaining culturally meaningful communication spaces and strengthening social cohesion amid contemporary social transformation.
