Teaching English as a Foreign Language Journal
ISSN : -     EISSN : 29619963     DOI : https://doi.org/10.12928/tefl
Focus and Scope Aims • The journal provides a formal, well-organised forum for non-native-English scholars to make new academic contributions to research and practice in ELT on a global basis. • The journal serves as a hosting space for both native and non-native academics to share ideas and become involved in novel dialogues, with an emphasis on under-researched areas in the field. Scopes • Local teachers’ beliefs about various aspects of ELT theory and practice • Fresh insights into current debates and controversial topics • Shared research findings from both teachers and scholars in ELT, especially from an outer circle perspective • Case studies in local contexts that enhance the localisation of academic theories in ELT (such as the practice of the lesson study model that originates outside of the inner circle) • Recognition of local teachers’ voices, which are less heard of in the inner-circle discourse, and their practical classroom ideas that are less common but important to not overlooked • Rethinking the transferability of ELT theories across global context (such as the communicative doctrine, the meaning of autonomy, the practice of verbal participation, etc.) • Practical classroom experiments in language education that would expand teachers’ knowledge and skills • Identifying gaps and addressing new topics that have not been strong focuses in previous research discourse in education (such as the use of silence in teaching, the improved alignment between pedagogy and assessment, etc.)

Abstract

Motivation plays a very important role in the success of learning a foreign language. Motivation can come from the teacher. Ways a teacher uses to increase students’ motivation in learning a foreign language are called Motivational Teaching Strategies. The aims of this research are to investigate the motivational teaching strategies used by an English native speaker lecturer and to know the students’ responses toward the Motivational Teaching Strategies used by an English native speaker lecturer. The type of this study is a qualitative research. The subjects involved are an English native speaker lecturer and 23 students of the third semester of the English Education Department, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta. To collect the data, it was done using classroom observation, interview, and classroom survey.  The research was conducted in Universitas Ahmad Dahlan during the pre-pandemic, around the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. To analyze the data, qualitative descriptive was utilized as the main technique. Using Dornyei’s framework of Motivational Teaching Strategies containing 48 items, the results of this study showed that the English native speaker lecturer applied almost all of the strategies of the Motivational Teaching Strategies by Dornyei (2001), which are divided into four categories:  creating the basic motivational conditions, generating initial motivation strategies, maintaining and protecting motivation, and encouraging positive retrospective self-evaluation. There were few strategies, however, that were not yet implemented because of some considerations.  In terms of the students‟ responses, the students mostly saw and agreed that the English native speaker lecturer applied the Motivational Teaching Strategies in the classroom.

Abstract

Translating a children's picture book is a challenging process. The focus of translating children's picture books is not only to transfer the meaning into the target language but also to guide the children to quickly understand the meaning of the sentences. Therefore, the translator must apply the appropriate sentence translation technique. This study aims to describe translation techniques used in translating Indonesian children's picture books into English. The data of this study are sentences taken from the Indonesian picture book "The Sacred Crocodile." The researchers used purposive sampling and a comparative method to analyze the data. The finding shows that translators use five translation techniques by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) in translating sentences: literal translation, modulation, transposition, and equivalence. The literal translation is the most frequently used translation technique, followed by transposition. The literal translation is a technique by which the translator translates expressions word-for-word from SL into TL. The dominant use of literal translation indicates that the translator tried to make the sentences easily understood by children. For further study, the researcher may consider the psychological aspects and characteristics of the children in order to motivate the children to read an English story book.

Abstract

This research aims to verify whether two classroom models, discussion-oriented and role-reversal, have an effective strategy for teaching vocabulary achievement to English language learners. The proposed models were examined as a successful method for teaching and learning vocabulary. A quasi-experimental strategy was used with three intact classes: one control (Electronic Engineering Learners A class) and two experimental (B and C class) (Electronic Engineering Learners B and C class). Using pre- and post-test writings, the effectiveness of the two models, which incorporated two digital applications, was determined. Additionally, a questionnaire created by the researcher and a semi- structured interview was used to assess vocabulary achievement. Covariance analysis revealed that classrooms that emphasized discussion and role reversal were more effective than those that did not. In terms of vocabulary growth in post-test expository writing, the role-reversal group also outperformed the discussion-oriented group. Further analyses revealed the positive perceptions and experiences surrounding flipped classrooms, highlighting four themes: instructor support, personal sentiment, peer support, and activities beyond the classroom. This report concludes by emphasizing the need for further research into this potential technology-based pedagogy across diverse language skills and the incorporation of technology in Vocabulary Achievement.

Abstract

Learning culture in recent years has shown that we are following the 21-century learning system where technology has a crucial role in it. Technology implementation in the learning activity depends on the teachers' digital competence: digital immigrant and digital native teachers. This study investigated how technology is used by English teachers, focusing on the differentiating factor in implementing technology of two different generations.  This descriptive qualitative study involved English teachers from different generations; a teacher with 7 years of teaching experience and another with 22 years teaching experience. An in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted to collect the data. The Apple Classroom Tomorrow (ACOT) framework was used to analyze how the digital immigrant and digital native teachers in the classroom implement technology. The results are that the digital natives and immigrants differ in implementing technology because of age and experience, student motivation, and ICT facility. Generation Z is a participant in the EFL teaching-learning process in the digital age, and this study demonstrates that the digital competence of the teachers must be developed in order to meet their needs.

Abstract

This paper explores the subject, adjunct and Wh-island constraints in the usage of  English in some selected Nigerian  newspapers. The purpose is to know the extent to which these constraints have adapted to the Nigerian English. This study is based on the same code which is English language but of different varieties such as Nigerian English and English by the native speakers. This research is qualitative in nature, it is based on textual analysis, data were purposively sampled from the reportage columns in some selected Nigerian newspapers such as the  interview columns. The theoretical framework used in this study is the Chomskyan Principles and Parameters theory with a focus on movement and bounding theories. Findings show that writers of Nigerian newspaper columns use the subject island, adjunct island and wh-island constraints sparingly and this shows a tactful attempt to avoid expressions which permits long distant wh- movement in order not to violate the subjacency conditions and syntactic constraints. Due to the tactful avoidance, this paper recommends that complex syntactic structures should be thought extensively at all stages in the Nigerian classrooms to enable L2 learners of English gain adequate competence and performance of the language.

Abstract

Students today grow up with technology devices at home and school, which transform how they study. Future education technology will alter teaching and learning by making new gadgets available to teachers and students. Thus, the study was meant to explore the impact of multimedia technology-integrated instruction on upper primary students' critical reading learning in one of Indonesia's private schools. To further comprehend the outcomes, a mixed methods study was conducted. Purposive sampling was used to choose 30 pupils as research samples. For three months, the participants were taught at least three science sessions per week utilizing multimedia technology. Instruments such as open-ended questions and questionnaires were used to collect data. The quantitative results from the questionnaire were examined and inferred using an inferential statistical t-test and descriptive statistical mean and standard deviation with a significance level of p 0.05. The qualitative data from open-ended questions were analyzed using the grounded theory coding technique. According to the findings, students were incredibly satisfied with learning science through multimedia technology because it made the lessons easier to grasp and more likely to engage, easy, and interesting. As a result, the researchers concluded that introducing multimedia technology into education had a considerable positive influence on raising student learning satisfaction and improving critical reading skills The post-test scores in the group that utilized multimedia technology are noticeably higher when the two groups are compared.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the influence of crossword puzzles on vocabulary mastery among the second semester students of the English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University Metro. The design of this research is experimental, which means that the research method requires two variables to compare the influencing factors. The data were quantitative in nature. Data collection was performed through the implementation of pre-test and post-test. The research chose the second semester students of the English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University Metro as the population. The students were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control groups. The experimental group consisted of 16 students. The data were collected with the implementation of pre-test and post-test as the instruments. The data analysis showed that the mean score of the post-test was higher than that of the pre-test (85.12 > 50.50). It showed that the t ratio was higher than t table (16.651 > 2.131) and the sig. 2 tailed was lower than sig. level (0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This means that the use of crossword puzzles influences students' vocabulary mastery.
