Abstract

Social entrepreneurship cannot be fully understood through a management and business-strategy lens alone; it also requires a sociological lens to capture the dimensions of social embeddedness, capital, and legitimacy surrounding social entrepreneurial practice. This conceptual article examines how the tension between social idealism and business sustainability is negotiated by social entrepreneurs by combining perspectives from economic sociology particularly social embeddedness and Bourdieu's capital-habitus-field triad with entrepreneurship theory on hybrid organizing and mission drift. Through a narrative literature review of publications from the last five years, this article shows that social entrepreneurs' idealism can be understood as a form of social embeddedness within networks and institutional structures, while business sustainability requires the accumulation of sufficient economic, social, and symbolic capital within the entrepreneurial field. Mission drift, in this framework, is reinterpreted as a process of disembeddedness, whereby the organization becomes detached from its social ties and community values due to the dominance of market logic. The article further connects these findings to the context of MSME-based social entrepreneurship in Indonesia, which is sustained by local social capital such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong) and community networks, and outlines implications for developing sociologically informed social entrepreneurship education in higher education.

Abstract

Globalization and the massive influence of Korean popular culture have shifted the construction of women's beauty standards in Indonesia, including the marketing strategies of local cosmetic products. This study aims to analyze the representation of women's beauty standards and the ideological construction in the local brand advertisement Scarlett Whitening, specifically the "Reveal Your Beauty With TWICE" version. This study employs an interpretative qualitative approach using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to deconstruct denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The primary data were collected through documentation and observation of the audio-visual elements within the advertisement. The findings reveal that the visual representations in the advertisement emphasize fair, bright, smooth skin, and a youthful appearance as the ideal form of beauty. Connotatively, the advertisement associates product usage with self-confidence, happiness, and social acceptance. At the myth level, the advertisement produces the idea that the universal beauty standard refers to the Korean beauty standard, constructing it as a natural and aspirational condition for the audience to achieve. The presence of K-Pop idol group TWICE as brand ambassadors serves not only as a promotional appeal but also acts as an instrument that produces and reinforces the hegemony of Korean popular culture in shaping the normalization of universal beauty standards in Indonesia.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education provides opportunities for teachers to develop more interactive and innovative digital learning media. However, the results of observations and pre-tests conducted at SD Negeri 021 Sungai Kunjang, Samarinda, indicated that most teachers used AI merely as an information-searching tool and lacked adequate skills to develop AI-assisted learning media. This community service program aimed to enhance teachers’ competencies in utilizing AI as a professional partner for developing interactive digital learning media to strengthen students’ literacy and numeracy skills. The program employed a participatory mentoring approach consisting of needs assessment, training sessions, hands-on practice, discussions, evaluation, and the establishment of a teacher learning community. A total of 22 elementary school teachers participated in the program. The results demonstrated significant improvements in teachers’ understanding and skills in designing effective prompts, selecting appropriate AI platforms, and developing digital learning media using ChatGPT, Canva AI, and Zep Quiz. In addition to producing classroom-ready learning materials, the program increased teachers’ confidence in integrating AI into pedagogical practices in an ethical and responsible manner. Program sustainability was supported through the establishment of a Professional Learning Community to facilitate the sharing of best practices and continuous professional development in digital competencies. These findings indicate that practice-based mentoring is an effective strategy for strengthening teachers’ competencies in utilizing AI to foster innovation in elementary school learning.
