Abstract

Anxiety can occur in patients who are about to undergo surgery in the operating room. This can disturb the patient's hemodynamics including increased blood pressure, increased pulse and increased respiration. If there are no anxiety prevention measures then surgery may be delayed due to the effects of anxiety. This study described the prevention of anxiety carried out by anesthesiologists in the preoperative room in order to maintain patient hemodynamics so that surgery can be performed according to schedule and procedure. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of anxiety prevention with a decrease in anxiety levels in patients in the preoperative room. The research method descriptive-analytic research method with a cross-sectional research design, the samples were patients who performed surgery in the preoperative room of several hospitals that had been selected, sampling technique with purposive sampling during October-December 2024, data collection methods with questionnaires, instruments using questions that are included in the google form to be filled in by anesthesiologists, data collection methods with google form through WA groups, data analyzed with univariate analysis. The results showed that the actions taken to prevent the most were to create a therapeutic atmosphere to foster trust by providing explanations to patients and families, providing a comfortable environment, minimizing pain, creating a therapeutic relationship between health workers and the patient. The conclusion of the several actions taken by anesthesia stylists to reduce patient anxiety levels, the most chosen is the action of creating a therapeutic atmosphere to create trust between health workers and patients so it is recommended that this action be carried out also by other health workers to help patients in the preoperative room

Abstract

Stunting poses a significant threat to the future Indonesia. The target of a 14% reduction in stunting has not yet been achieved. However, the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) highlights the need for local food ingredients in preparing nutrition for stunting prevention. Utilizing locally available food sources serves as an alternative solution to ensure that children's nutritional needs are met easily and affordably. Education incorporating local wisdom is crucial for stunting prevention. To evaluate the effectiveness of education using the e-Nutrilla model as a method to improve children’s growth status, maternal feeding behavior, and maternal self-efficacy in providing complementary feeding (MPASI). The research design used was a one-group pretest-posttest without control. The population consisted of all mothers with children aged 12–59 months, with a sample size of 36 mothers. The statistical test applied was the Wilcoxon test. All respondents experienced an improvement in maternal feeding behavior categories from pre-test to post-test, with a Mean Rank of 18.50. The mean difference in maternal self-efficacy before and after education was 0.5, with an Asymp Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.004. Before the intervention, 6 children (16.7%) showed no growth improvement, which decreased to 3 children (8.3%) after the intervention, with an Asymp Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.257. The e-Nutrilla education model has a positive effect on maternal feeding behavior and maternal self-efficacy but does not significantly impact children’s growth status.

Abstract

Comprehensive community support is needed to help mothers cope with the psychological, physical, and social challenges of caring for a child with autism. This study aimed to identify differences in mothers' initial responses, spiritual coping strategies that influence psychological well-being, and factors supporting and inhibiting maternal coping in developed and developing countries. A literature search was conducted on EBSCO, PubMed, Wiley, Science Direct, ProQuest, Research Rabbit, and Google Scholar databases from 2014 to 2023, which was screened using Mendeley. Critical appraisal and data mapping were performed with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist for qualitative research and textual evidence. A total of 18 selected studies were analyzed using a narrative approach. The results identified five main themes: (1) acceptance and love in the face of adversity, (2) resilience through emotional turmoil to social and cultural complexities, (3) strength in community and shared experiences, (4) empowerment, and (5) advocacy. The spiritual coping strategies of mothers in developing countries differ from those in developed countries, influenced by social, cultural, and economic contexts. Social support proved crucial for maternal emotional resilience. Education of health workers on culture-based spiritual coping strategies is needed to support maternal well-being. An approach that considers the social, cultural, and economic context will facilitate access to resources, integration of relevant spirituality, and self-empowerment. This aims to improve maternal mental health and create an inclusive environment that supports families, especially mothers of children with autism.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is often accompanied by sleep disturbances that can worsen glycemic control and increase the risk of complications. The combination of lavender aromatherapy and sleep hygiene is a non-pharmacological intervention that can potentially improve sleep quality in T2DM patients. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of lavender aromatherapy and sleep hygiene in improving sleep quality in T2DM patients. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach. The sample consisted of 15 inpatients with T2DM at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, who were selected using an accidental sampling method. Interventions included lavender aromatherapy inhalation and sleep hygiene implementation, including ablution, prayer, sleeping position, and lighting. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests to see changes in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores before and after the intervention. The mean PSQI score of the patients decreased significantly from 8.67 before the intervention to 5.40 after the intervention (p=0.001), indicating a significant improvement in sleep quality. The combination of lavender aromatherapy and sleep hygiene effectively improves sleep quality in T2DM patients. This intervention can be adopted in nursing practice to manage sleep disorders holistically.

Abstract

This paper examined the place of effective communication among student nurses of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and explored strategies to enhance their communication skills. Effective communication is crucial in nursing practice for ensuring patient safety, promoting positive outcomes, and fostering therapeutic relationships. The study was motivated by the discovery during lectures that a number of the students had challenges with basic communication. The paper randomly selected thirty participants who are Peri-Operative, Post-Basic Anesthesia, and Nephrology student-nurses from the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State, for the study and using Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as data collection method, data was elicited from the discussion and discussed in the study. The paper discovered that language barriers, cultural differences, and limited proficiency in English pose significant challenges for student nurses and widely affect their communication. The paper therefore concluded that by implementing targeted interventions such as language support programs, cultural competency training, and communication skills workshops, educators and healthcare institutions can empower student nurses to overcome language barriers and enhance their communication abilities.

Abstract

Ensuring reliable access to medical oxygen is critical to a quality healthcare system. A descriptive observational study was conducted over 6 months to examine the management and utilization of oxygen in hospitals across Ethiopia, focusing on facility and patient data. The study included 11 hospitals in 6 regions of Ethiopia, with data collection from emergency departments, ICUs, NICUs, pediatric and medical wards. Results showed that 36.36% of facilities had a functioning oxygen system, but less than half had a straightforward person in charge of oxygen and a standardized therapy flow. Meanwhile, 54.55% of facilities reported having medical personnel trained in oxygen therapy, although the number of trained staff varied. Incomplete oxygen prescriptions were shared, such as missing flow rates, SpO2, and monitoring frequency. However, patients who received oxygen therapy had a significantly higher recovery rate (66.23%) compared to patients who did not receive oxygen (21.43%). These findings indicate significant gaps in the availability and management of oxygen infrastructure and suboptimal oxygen administration and monitoring practices. A multifaceted approach is needed to remedy this, including improved functioning of oxygen plants, the appointment of dedicated oxygen attendants, standardized therapy protocols, broader training of medical personnel, and standardization of oxygen funding and costs.
