Abstract

This study attempts to analyze semiotic elements and messages intended for readers, focusing specifically on the types of signs according to Charles Sanders Peirce. Data was obtained from five cigarette package of no smoking warning labels, which were analyzed using Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of semiotics. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with the aim of descriptively explaining. The primary data for this study were obtained from Indonesian cigarette packages currently on the market, all of which are actively distributed and available to consumers, ensuring that the data reflects current industry practices and market conditions. The brands collected in this particular study include Glory, Nation Bold, Filasta, Dio, and Sampoerna, representing a range of commonly available products. Based on this study, it was revealed that cigarette warning labels are strategically designed to reduce global smoking prevalence by presenting visual depictions of smoking-related illnesses alongside explicit health warnings. These measures aim to increase public awareness and influence behavior, thereby reducing both the frequency and intensity of smoking.

Abstract

The use of language in literature and film plays an important role in expressing ideas, emotions and also in criticism. The film The Devil Wears Prada contains many sarcastic types, especially in a conversation between the main characters in the competitive fashion industry. The characters frequently use sarcastic language to criticize something around them. These sarcasm is not only to create drama and humor but also reflect work pressure. This research analyzes the use of the sarcasm in the movie The Devil Wears Prada that made by Lauren Weisberger by using Elizabeth Camp (2012) theory about sarcasm. Purpose of this study to identify type of sarcasm and explain how it reflects criticism and implicit meaning in the films. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method because this study focuses on the dialog meaning based on the context. The primary data of this study are the dialog and movie script taken from the film. The findings show that there are 21 sarcasms found in this film. Propositional sarcasm appears most frequently with 13 data followed by lexical sarcasm with 5 data, illocutionary with 3 data while Like-Prefixed Sarcasm with 0 data. The results show that propositional sarcasm becomes the dominant type because the characters often express criticism and negative directly through statements.

Abstract

This research analyzes family bonding values in Gifted written by Tom Flynn using Fritz Van Wel’s (1994) Family Bonding Theory. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of family bonding and explain how family values are represented through the emotional interactions among the characters in the movie. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method because the study focuses on dialogues, scenes, and emotional relationships portrayed in the movie. The primary data of this research are dialogues and scenes related to family relationships between Frank Adler, Mary Adler, and Evelyn Adler. The researcher collected the data by watching the movie repeatedly, identifying important scenes, and classifying the data according to Van Wel's idea, it includes intimacy, love, closeness, trust, commitment, attachment, and interdependence. The result of this research show that all aspects of family bonding are represented in the movie. Attachment becomes the most dominant aspect because the story mainly focuses on emotional protection, affection, and support between Frank and Mary. In addition, the movie also portrays commitment, interdependence, closeness, trust, intimacy, and love through parenting conflicts, sacrifice, communication, and emotional struggles among the characters. The researcher concludes that family relationships are formed not only through biological connections but also through emotional care, responsibility, and unconditional love. Therefore, Gifted reflects the importance of strong emotional relationships in maintaining family harmony and emotional well-being.

Abstract

This study examines how emotional expression is represented in the song “Double Take” by Dhruv through a discourse analysis approach. The research focuses on four linguistic features; diction, metaphor, pronoun usage, and repetition and analyzes how these elements help convey emotional meaning in the lyrics. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes official song lyrics as the primary data. The data were collected through documentation and interpreted using an interactive analysis model supported by theories from Geoffrey Leech, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, Norman Fairclough, and Deborah Tannen. The findings identify 12 expressions of emotion represented through the four linguistic features. The study shows that diction reflects emotional honesty, longing, and inner conflict, while metaphors transform abstract feelings into imaginative expressions. Pronoun usage highlights interpersonal relationships and personal perspectives, and repetition strengthens emotional intensity and uncertainty. These linguistic features create complex emotional meanings, including vulnerability, obsession, and ambiguity. This analysis finds that emotional expression in song lyrics is shaped by the interaction of multiple linguistic elements rather than isolated features alone. The research contributes to discourse analysis by offering a better understanding of how language expresses subtle emotions in contemporary music and may serve as a reference for future studies in linguistics and literary analysis.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to improve the students’ speaking ability through the use of role play in the Basic English Class of the Automotive Machine Study Program at Politeknik Negeri Jember. This study was categorized as Classroom Action Research (CAR), which consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative data and was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle included four meetings: three meetings for presenting the material and one meeting for conducting a speaking test. The data in this study were collected through quantitative data in the form of speaking tests as the primary data, while qualitative data such as field notes and documentation served as supporting data. The findings of the study showed that the students’ speaking abilities improved significantly. This improvement could be seen from the average scores obtained in the first and second cycle tests. In the first cycle, the students achieved an average score of 73.55, with 21 students (42%) passing the speaking test. In the second cycle, the average score increased to 85.24, with 42 students (84%) passing the speaking test. Overall, the improvement reached 42%. These findings indicate that the Scripted Role Play teaching technique effectively improved the students’ speaking skills. In addition, scripted role play helped students develop their speaking ability because they had adequate preparation before performing the script or scenario.

Abstract

This study examines how women's language features and gossip function as communicative strategies in the performance of gender identity in contemporary media discourse. Drawing on sociolinguistic frameworks proposed by Lakoff, Holmes, Bucholtz and Hall, Eckert and McConnell-Ginet, McAndrew, and Butler's gender performativity theory, this study analyzes Millie Bobby Brown's utterances in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through purposive sampling of conversational segments containing women's language features and gossip instances. The analysis identified 21 instances of women's language features, including intensifiers, hedges, empty adjectives, politeness forms, and emotional expressions, alongside five instances of gossip serving social bonding, entertainment, and reputation management functions. The findings indicate that these linguistic features do not reflect powerlessness or negative stereotypes; rather, they function as context-dependent performative resources through which the speaker constructs a warm, expressive, and socially engaged gender identity before a mass audience. This study contributes to sociolinguistic research by demonstrating that women's language and gossip are dynamic communicative practices actively employed in the performance of gender in contemporary talk show discourse.

Abstract

Suprasegmental elements such as stress, intonation, and rhythm play a fundamental role in spoken English communication, yet they remain consistently underrepresented in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and curriculum design. This conceptual paper synthesizes current empirical research to examine how EFL learners perceive these three prosodic features and to explore the pedagogical implications of such perceptions for pronunciation instruction. Drawing on studies in applied linguistics, second language acquisition (SLA), and pronunciation pedagogy, this paper reveals that learners generally acknowledge the communicative significance of stress and intonation, while rhythm remains the least understood and most pedagogically neglected feature across different proficiency levels. A recurring finding across studies is the persistent gap between learners’ theoretical awareness of suprasegmental features and their practical confidence in producing these features during real-time, spontaneous communication. This gap is attributed to limited explicit instruction, the abstract nature of prosodic features, and the influence of learners’ native language rhythmic patterns. The paper further identifies that EFL learners tend to view intonation as the most communicatively important but also the most cognitively demanding suprasegmental feature, while stress receives moderate attention and rhythm is frequently misunderstood or overlooked entirely. Based on these findings, the article advocates for explicit, integrated, and communicatively embedded teaching of suprasegmental features in EFL classrooms. Practical instructional strategies—including shadowing, rhythm-tapping, and discourse-level intonation analysis—are discussed as means to bridge the divide between learners’ suprasegmental knowledge and their oral performance.

Abstract

Patriarchal culture remains a significant social issue that influnces women’s lives, particurarly in relation to marriage, family authority, and gender expectations literary works often reflect these social realities and serve as a mendium for criticizing social inequality. This study aims to analyze the representation of patriarchal culture and the social criticism of patriarchy portrayed in Amulya Malladi’s novel The Mango Season. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using the sociology of literature approach and Marxist feminist perspective. The data were collected through intensive reading and note-taking techniques, focusing on narrative descriptions and dialogues related to patriarchal practices. The findings reveal that patriarchal culture is represented through family control over women’s marital decisions, the expectation that women must marry to achieve happiness, the persistence of dowry practices, and social standards that evaluate women based on age, appearance, and marital status. Furthermore, the novel presents social criticism by exposing the limitations imposed on women’s autonomy and highlighting their resistance to patriarchal norms. The study implies that literary works can function as a critical medium for raising awareness of gender inequality and encouraging more equitable social relations in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of teacher oral feedback strategies used during speaking activities and to describe their implementation at the tenth grade of MAN Pematangsiantar. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were collected through classroom observation, supported by video recording, audio recording, and field notes, involving one English teacher and thirty-six students of grade tenth. The data were analyzed using the oral corrective feedback framework proposed by Ellis (2009) and the learner error categories proposed by Lyster and Ranta (1997), as adapted by Faris (2018). The qualitative data were analyzed through the procedures proposed by Miles, et al. (2014). The findings revealed that the teacher used four out of six oral feedback strategies, namely recast, clarification request, explicit correction, and elicitation. Recast was the most frequently used strategy (45.4%), followed by clarification request (27.2%), explicit correction (18.1%), and elicitation (9.09%). Repetition and paralinguistic signal were not observed during the classroom interactions. Furthermore, the implementation of oral feedback was triggered by four types of learner errors, namely grammar errors, vocabulary errors, pronunciation errors, and L1 use. Grammar and pronunciation errors were the most frequently occurring errors.

Abstract

This study explores female agency and resistance as central dramatic elements in Ratna Sarumpaet’s political play Marsinah Menggugat (1994). Set during Indonesia’s New Order regime under Suharto’s leadership, the play portrays the murder of labor activist Marsinah and presents her ghost as an accuser seeking justice and challenging historical silence. Drawing on feminist theatre theory, postcolonial discourse, and the concept of subaltern agency, this study argues that Sarumpaet represents Marsinah not merely as a victim of oppression but as a powerful female figure who resists the erasure imposed by state authority and patriarchal structures. Employing a qualitative research approach based on feminist literary criticism, the study uses the play script as the primary data source. Data analysis involves close reading, thematic categorization, and interpretive analysis through the perspectives of Diamond (1997), Butler (1990), Spivak (1988), and Suryakusuma (1996). The findings reveal four forms of female agency: the monologue as an expression of an autonomous female voice, the spectral body as a symbol of political resistance, language and naming as acts against state-imposed silence, and personal testimony as a foundation for collective feminist solidarity. This study demonstrates that Marsinah Menggugat transforms theatre into a counter-hegemonic space where marginalized women reclaim historical narratives, challenge authoritarian power, and preserve collective memory through performance and resistance.
