Abstract

Abstract

When we use the term 'World Literature', what comes into our minds is the meaning of the two words, what is the mean by World?Literature? We can browse through the internet and try to find the meaning of this phrase in the cyber world, but can all definitions and lists of works from the many writers in the sites actually be acknowledged as World Literature? Moreover, if we try  to explore the two words, does 'literature' only refer to literary works or all kinds of literature including books? The next word is 'world' of course has its own problem because we do not actually know whether it means the whole world in which every single literary work on earth is considered as world literature or it only refers to certain parts of the world like Europe and America.       The phare Weliliteratur was first articulated by a German writer, Wieland, in the context of world culture that privileges literary works in order to bring people to the world. It was quite different when Goethe used this phrase in his letter to Karl Streckfub, a translator of Italian classical works on 27 January1927, and Goethe used the word Welt in acontext of literature beyond the national context, literature outside German across national boundaries. Goethe articulated it by saying:       "I am more convinced, "Goehte remarked, " that poetry is the universal possession of mankind, revealing itself everywhere and at all times in hundreds and hundreds of men... I therefore like to look about me in foreign nations, and advise everyone to do the same. National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of world literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach."       The term used by Goethe gives out a modern sense which suits the globalize era where we live now. In this case, Goethe seemed to be ahead of his time in making a literary contribution.

Abstract

Abstract In everyday life, the story of human life can be an idea to make an interesting story to be known by the public. The novel contains a series of events that occur in the world of imagination. The storyline in a novel has an important role in a series of events. In this research, the problem that will be discussed is about identifying the image of an ideal Javanese woman and the personality of a Javanese woman based on the viewpoint of a male author on the basis of a Javanese novel. In dismantling the structure of the story a qualitative approach based on data processing will be used, to get a picture of the personality of the story's character. The approach to the perspectives of Javanese authors will be based on reality in Javanese culture that is part of the life of Javanese people. The purpose of this study is to describe how Javanese women are depicted in this novel. The findings in this novel research are that the female characters in this novel, women can play a dual role, namely as a housewife and at the same time someone who must be able to help meet the needs of family life. In fulfilling the necessities of life, one of them women can act as a stage artist. The behavior of Javanese women, despite their dual role, must still be in accordance with Javanese cultural customs. This is then used as an idea to write a story about the life of a Javanese woman, which should be in Javanese culture.AbstrakDalam kehidupan sehari-hari, cerita kehidupan manusia dapat menjadi gagasan untuk membuat sebuah cerita yang menarik untuk dikenal oleh masyarakat. Abstract

This paper concems with the change in the visual environment of colonial city and the ways in which they helped to shape political imagination. What kinds of architectural and urban spectacles were constructed and what role did they play in contributing to the formation of alternative identities for the Indonesians under Dutch colonial rule? How could colonial cities be understood less as a "form of dominance", but rather a city that was appropriated by the colonized to produce unintended consequences that contributed to the undermining of colonial power? The focus of this paper is thus the political implications of the visual environment of the colonial city. I rely on literature and a range of discursve visual representations in documenting the ways in which the material city was experienced in its wider social political context. Yet what can we except from the visual environment?

Abstract

In addition to looking into the socio-political milieu of the production and interpretation of Indonesian literature, as well as the historic interaction between some Indonesian and Malay writers, this article also attempts to discuss changes in the meaning of ‘Malay’ identity and ‘Malayness’ and the application of certain interpretations of such an identity in both the contemporary and historic perspectives. The discussion depends largely on Joel Kahn’s anthropological analysis of ‘nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Modern Malay world. ‘A comparison with the meaning and application of ‘Indonesia’ identity will then be made. Some conclusions that can be drawn are, among others, that the malayness/indonesianess’ of a writer is not relevant since literature as a text is not based on the ethnic category to which the writer belongs, but on its language or its milieu of production. However, it is also realized that this analysis may be too simplistic as it does not take into account the many exceptions that exist. Finally, this article does not aim to offer any solution to the indeterminacy surrounding the ‘Malay’ or ‘Indonesia’ identity in this global era, and at best, it can only bring up a set of questions for our contemplation.

Abstract

The threat of losing successors to speakers of regional languages is a common problem that needs to be reviewed together. The way that can be done to attract the interest of the younger generation to learn local languages is to use social media. One of the existing social media butts makers is Hi.kaaal which produces localized butts trending on Tiktok. This research was conducted to reveal the form of transmission that occurs in hi.kaaal's stump localization. The method used in this study is a descriptive-qualitative method with a recipe approach by Jauss. Butts adapted from foreign trends on Hi.kaaal's butts total of 12 videos, five videos in Javanese script, 3 Javanese in Latin script, and 3 Indonesian videos in Jawi script. The form of acceptance found shows two different language styles; in Javanese, the literal meaning is used with Javanese Krama, and some Old Javanese vocabulary is found. Meanwhile, Indonesian uses a more foreign language or is rarely used in everyday life. The form of localization that was carried out succeeded in attracting the interest of many parties who wanted to study regional languages and scripts. Abstract

This paper will discuss how a contemporary work of literature is coherent with a work of the past, corresponding with facts of the past and in the end seeks to construct present day Indonesia. The work discussed is Berjuta-juta dari Deli (2006) (BD) by Emil W. Aulia, which was strongly infuenced by Max Havelaar atau Lelang Kopi di Maskapai Dagang Belanda (1860) (MH). The influence can be seen in the story-telling technique, stereotyping of characters, plot and theme of colonialişm. The thing is, MH was written in colonial time and the writer was directly involved, while BD was written by an author who lives in postcolonial time about a century later. his difference resulted in the ways of interpreting the colonial society. The method applied is Russian formalism which puts an importance in sequence and plot. The analyzing technique is the historical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. Based on the postcolonial theory, heuristic analysis is employed to uncover the mask of present day Indonesian character. The result is, the construction of Indonesia today is actually the shadow of/infiuenced/constructed by yesterday's Indonesia The shaping of today's character can not be separated from the conception that existed in the time of the Dutch occupation. This shaping has three stages. First, Indonesian man is metaphorically characterized as animal (buffalo) Second, since the communicative character is buffalo, the media of communication are orders and physical punishments. Third, if not buffalo, the Indonesian man is a believer of false hopes spread by agents of neo-colonialism. Considering this result, we need to shape the nation's character with things that can free us from the three mentioned stages of interpretation, minderlijk, colonial mentality and the miserable condition of the Netherlands Indie Truly, we had been free before.
