Abstract

This paper underlines the importance of understanding post structuralism, especially the deconstructive method, in analyzing and researching literary works. There are three elements in the deconstructive method: writing, metalanguage, and the subject, which should function as analytical tools in understanding a literary work.

Abstract

This article discusses to of Sindhunata’s novels, Semar Mencari Raga (1996) and Tak Enteni Keplokmu Tanpa Bunga dan Telegram Duka (2000), as novels produced by a local writer (Yogyakarta) who possesses an aesthetic vision marked by the blurring of literary genres that opens up a new dimension in the creative process. Semar Mencari Raga came out of Sindhunata’s intense observation of the paintings of ten artist living in Yogyakarta (Agung Leak Kumiawan, Djoko Pekik, Eddie Haru, Hanura Hosea, Hari Budiono, Hary Wahyu, Hendro Suseno, Murtianto Antik and Suatmaji). All of them took Semar as their central theme. Meanwhile, Tak Enteni Keplokmu Tanpa Bunga dan Telegram Duka was inspred by the paintings of Djoko Pekik that depicted wild boars. Sindhunata immersed himself in each painting, attempting to understand them without making any negative judgement regarding their qualities. Equipped with his genius for apprecialion, he then played with his wild imagination, expanding the horizon of neu possibilities to give birth to a new kind of novel rich with social critique that confronted the dark side of the New Order’s authoritarian and mililaristic politicians near the end of Soehurto’s rule. Both novels are imbued with profound philosophical reflections on the Javanese culture, which is part of Sindhunata's everyday life. Kata kunci: novel, kritik sosial, dimensi baru.

Abstract

Today, the teaching of literature in schools is part of the teaching of the Indonesian language. Perhaps, due to the prevailing assumption that anything that is taught at schools should be scientific, all of the text books on literature for secondary schools are full of concepts, terms, lists of works, biography of authors and so on, which more often than not, take away much of the valuable time for the enjoyment of reading the work. In this paper the author argues that literary appreciation demands that students read literary works. However, there are three other problems related to, namely, reading material, selection of works worth reading, and the status and function of teachers in the appreciation process.

Abstract

Until today, the discussion over Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana's works has still been controversial. On one hand, he was considered pro-West and anti-East, while on the other he was respected as a visionary and a man of principle whose contributions to 20"' century Indonesian intellectual and political life have been essential. Aside from these contradicting views, a thorough study on his lifelong works 1s still rare, and people based their views more on hearsay rather than on their own reading of his writings lhis paper, I hope, will mark an important point in the Indonesian and internation11 nppreciation and recognition ofSutan Takdir Alisjahbana's work. Abstract

During and after British Colonialism in Malaysia, as well as Dutch colonialism in Indonesia, many colonial subjects, especially the natives, have experienced an identity crisis. According to Linda Martin Alcoff (2000:324), since almost two decades ago, identity crisis has sparked a heated debate in psychoanalysis, poststructuralism and postcolonial studies. Specifically in postcolonial studies, identity crisis has clearly become a fundamental problem of people in the colony, considering that colonization by foreign power took place over a very long span of time.Prolonged colonization may have caused a colonized country, nation, or individual suffer from a contaminated identity as they have been co-opted and dominated by the culture of their colonizer, which was usually considered stronger, bigger, and more powerful. Then, as national consciousness began to emerge among the colonized, particularly after independence, once again they began to embark on the quest for a national and individual identity. However, what they mostly encountered is natives whose identity is fracture and shaped by double consciousness. Such an identity comes into being due to the long period of colonization, which helped institutionalize various colonial practices that had only served to dominate the natives and maintained unequal power relations. There are two determining factors that cause the natives to experience identity crisis. First, they were led to believe that they were inferior and taught to cultivate self-hatred. At the same time, they were also made to worship Western civilization. Second, colonialism brought about chronic moral degradation among the natives.Viewed from this perspective, some Malaysian and Indonesian native writers take on identity crisis as the theme of their works. Authors such as Keris Mas, Abdul Moeis and Mochtar Lubis will be examined using a comparative approach. The purpose of this study is to raise awareness among the natives in both countries in general and in the HISKI community in particular to maintain their independence. Independence is key to help the natives deal with any threat to the survival of their identity brought about by identity crisis. Actually, the selected works of these authors are a reflection of the past history of the people in the colony, which allows the present-day generation to draw a lesson from it so that the impact of colonialism may not linger forever.

Abstract

Abstract

Talking about literary works written by Chinese-lndonesians, we can mention three kinds of works. First, as once discussed by writers like Leo Suryadinata and Claudine Salmon, are the works written since the 1870s until 1965, either mixed literature (tusheng huaren wenxue), written in the Malay language, or Chinese literature written in Chinese language. In general, the works reflect the life of the Chinese in Indonesia. Second are the works written in the New Order era, when Chinese culture was almost eliminated in Indonesia. Writers like Marga Tjoa Liang Tjoe and Mira Widjaja, who wrote under the names of Marga T. dan Mira W. (which hide their Chinese origin) identified themselves with Indonesian national culture Chinese culture or problems were not a priority in their works. Third are the works written in post-Suharto era The life and problems of the Chinese in Indonesia were brought up by some Indonesian writers, who are not Chinese or whose ethnicity is not important or not clear. Examples of such works include the short story "Clara by Seno Gumira Ajidama, the romance Ca Bau Kan by Remy Sylado, and the compilation of short stories Panggil aku Pheng Hwa by Veven Sp. Wardhana. In this paper, I will analize the "Chineseness of Veven Sp. Wardhana, a writer who claimed to speak for the Chinese people in his short stories.
