Abstract

Belajar bermain piano akan lebih mudah bagi orang yang sudah mahir mengetik, belajar mengendarai motor akan lebih mudah bagi orang yang sudah mahir menaiki sepeda. Kemudahan ini diperoleh karena terdapat kesamaan unsur yang digunakan pada dua kegiatan tadi. Kesamaan unsur merupakan sebab mudahnya memperoleh sesuatu karena unsur yang baru telah diketahui pada unsur sebelumnya. Dua asumsi ini, penulis analogikan dalam penelitian “Minat baca sastra siswa di perpustakaan hubungannya dengan prestasi mereka dalam pelajaran bidang studi Bahasa Indonesia” yang dilakukan di kelas XI IPS SMU 4 Yupentek, Tangerang. Penulis menganggap terdapat kesamaan unsur antara membaca karya sastra dengan pelajaran bidang studi Bahasa Indonesia. Salah satu unsur dalam pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia adalah unsur sastra. Oleh karena itu tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui minat baca sastra siswa di perpustakaan, untuk mengetahui prestasi mereka dalam bidang studi Bahasa Indonesia, dan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara minat baca sastra siswa dengan prestasi belajar mereka. Dari hasil penelitian yang penulis lakukan didapati bahwa minat baca sastra siswa di perpustakaan berkualifikasi tinggi dengan rata-rata nilai sebesar 4,035, prestasi siswa dalam bidang studi Bahasa Indonesia ditunjukkan dengan angka rata-rata 3,27 dengan kualifikasi sedang, dan mengenai hubungan minat baca dan prestasi ditunjukkan dengan angka sebesar 0,88 dengan kualifikasi signifikansi tinggi.

Abstract

This paper tries to find out kinds of emotions appearing from the novel Penakluk Ujung Dunia (Conqueror of the World's Cape). lt told us about the struggle for land among Batak ethnic groups near Lake Toba a long time ago, triggered by the population growth. One ethnic group defeated another under a young commander, Ronggur. They did not only seize the enemies teritory, but also their women and children. One of them, Tio, became Ronggur's slave. He actually disagreed with the way of enlarging territory by attacking others. He believed—he got it from his dream—that someone had asked him to go along the river to its end to find a "new world". The chief and all villagers did not agree with him, because it was the place of their gods. Human being was prohibited to go there. His violation made him banished from his tribe and lost all his rights and sentenced to death. But, he managed to escape and carry on his intention by rowing along the river accompanied by Tio-who later became his wife. This novel expresses the mental structure of one culture in Indonesia at a certain time. By doing textual analysis on verbal and non-verbal expression through words, phrases, and sentences, we could describe the emotional condition of the Batak ethnic group at a certain time. Textual approach in this research is not only based on psychology. It also uses language as symbolic means.

Abstract

This study aimed to elaborate on the students’ creativity in responding to literary works, in this case, a poem entitled Beowulf by utilizing visual symbols. The population of this research students from the 4th semester of English education in Sriwijaya University in the academic year 2020/2021 consists of 73 students. The researcher used the purposive sampling method. There were 34 students chosen as samples. The instruments of the research were test and documentation of their Visual Symbol Response which were analyzed by using Rubric for Creativity. The result showed students can appreciate literature using visual symbols. These symbols can help students visualize the words written in literary works so as to form an interesting performance. On the other hand, the students have been able to elaborate on critical thinking and also their creativity. The students were generally not at the degree of "imitative" in any way. The vast majority of students were "creative," but none of them were "very creative." Critical thinking may aid readers in discovering the deeper meaning of a piece of prose or poem, as well as allowing them to see the other side or what lies behind it. The students enjoy their creativity as they have strived to create visual symbols to be interesting videos as the early effort to prepare virtual drama performance. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengelaborasi kreativitas siswa dalam merespon karya sastra, dalam hal ini puisi berjudul Beowulf dengan memanfaatkan simbol-simbol visual. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 4 pendidikan bahasa Inggris di Universitas Sriwijaya tahun ajaran 2020/2021 berjumlah 73 mahasiswa. Peneliti menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Ada 34 siswa yang dipilih sebagai sampel. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes dan dokumentasi Respon Simbol Visual yang dianalisis menggunakan Rubrik Kreativitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan siswa dapat mengapresiasi karya sastra dengan menggunakan simbol-simbol visual. Simbol-simbol tersebut dapat membantu siswa memvisualisasikan kata-kata yang tertulis dalam karya sastra sehingga membentuk suatu pertunjukan yang menarik. Di sisi lain, siswa telah mampu mengelaborasi pemikiran kritis dan juga kreativitasnya. Para siswa umumnya tidak pada tingkat "meniru" dengan cara apa pun. Sebagian besar siswa adalah "kreatif", tetapi tidak satu pun dari mereka yang "sangat kreatif". Berpikir kritis dapat membantu pembaca dalam menemukan makna yang lebih dalam dari sebuah prosa atau puisi, serta memungkinkan mereka untuk melihat sisi lain atau apa yang ada di baliknya. Para siswa menikmati kreativitas mereka karena mereka telah berusaha untuk membuat simbol visual menjadi video yang menarik sebagai upaya awal untuk mempersiapkan pertunjukan dramavirtual.

Abstract

This study uses the movie of Spencer 2021 to describe the types of refusal strategies and the sequences of refusal strategies. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that there are 2 types of refusal strategies:direct refusal and indirect refusal strategies. There are several subtypes included in the classification: reasons or explanations (12 data), attempts to obstruct the interlocutor (6 data) statements of principle (4 data), non-performative statements (5 data), statements of regret (3 data), alternative statements (2 data), acceptance that functions as a refusal (1 data) and avoidance (1 data). In addition, the sequences of refusal strategies consist of post refusal (22 data), pre-refusal (15 data) and main refusal (6 data).  AbstrakPenelitian ini menggunakan film Spencer 2021 untuk mendeskripsikan jenis-jenis strategi penolakan dan urutan strategi penolakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 2 jenis strategi penolakan: strategi penolakan langsung dan strategi penolakan tidak langsung. Terdapat beberapa subtipe yang termasuk dalam klasifikasi tersebut: alasan atau penjelasan (12 data), upaya menghalangi lawan bicara (6 data) pernyataan prinsip (4 data), pernyataan non-performatif (5 data), pernyataan penyesalan (3 data), pernyataan alternatif (2 data), penerimaan yang berfungsi sebagai penolakan (1 data) dan penghindaran (1 data). Selain itu, urutan strategi penolakan adalah post refusal (22 data), pre-refusal (15 data) dan main refusal (6 data).

Abstract

Post-Independence, colonialism leaves a complex cultural problem. The old culture that has been slowly deteriorating due to the penetration of Western culture tries hard to stay alive and sometimes can even produce its local genius, on the other hand, that same Western culture can never really settle as an integral part of the Third World. Colonization is not an experience that can be easily forgotten. That is why colonialism remains a prevalent theme in the national literature of a once colonized people. Following conquest and armed violence, the process of disseminating Western modernity is carried out through education, so Western education often becomes a problematic part of the Third World. Some welcome it warmly, some try to fight and resist it, while others are ambivalent, unable to decide whether they should reject or accept it. By using examples of short stories from Thailand, China, and novels by Chinua Achebe, Jose Rizal, F. Sionil Jose, Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana, Armijn Pane, and Okot p;Bitek, the portrayal of Western education in the Third World literature is discussed, as well as its impact on education and social conflict in Indonesia today.Kata kunci: pendidikan, kolonialisasi, modernitas, tradisi

Abstract

National identity may be defined as a nation’s culture and language heritage reflected in the nation’s character, way of thinking or mentality. Raja Ali Haji  (1809-1870) was an important intellectual figure in the history of Malay literature and culture. His works, which include various texts covering history, language and statesmanship, have placed him as a pioneer ot Malay intellectuals his paper aims to analyse the element of national identity in his poetries, which was meant to be some kind of guidance for character building The book Puisi-puisi Raja Ali Haji (The Poems of Raja Ali Haji) serves as the man source for the analysis and a library research was conducted to do it. This paper prioritise on the Raja Ali Haji's character so that his thoughts can be comprehended and valued by various generations of the Malay society as well as by the global society.

Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted to trace the historical narratives about the relationships in of Bugis people who were travelling a settling somw where with some Asian trible recorded in the classical literary words. The aims of this research was find out a clear line of family tree of of the kings of Buginess kings their main roles of in the inter-ethnics peace. The Hikayat Bugis-Malay stories relating to kingdoms, of B indicated to have relations in some tribes in Nusantara (courtelly Asean) with the Bugis travellers. Some tribes mentioned in the hikayat setting in same islands such as Riau, Aceh, Siak, Johor, Pahang, Langkawi, Java, Melaka, and Kanboja. The benefits gained from this study thas theoretical and practical benefits. The writing method was tescriptive qualitve with ethnometodology approach which was based literature philology. The through study of the Bugis-Malay Hikayat, the close relation of tribes in Asia cab be described, for example socio-politics, relations, peace, marriage, trade wich then led to bonding through out family trees.

Abstract

The function of literary works, specifically that of fictional narratives, has beensource of debate in Western and Eastern civilisations throughout the ages. TheMalay literary tradition is no exception; V.1. Braginsky states that since the 16thand 17th centuries, Malays have been aware of the functional value of Iiterature,which among other functions serves to teach, and to enlighten mankind withknowledge. It is important to note that the same issue is still a matter of debatein contemporary Malay literature. Chief amongst those who regularly foregroundthe issue is Mohd. Affandi Hassan (heralter Hassan), a contemporary Malayliterary critic and creative writer. As a literary critic, Hassan generated the notion of 'Persuratan Baru', a notion that amongst other principles urges authorsif Malay literary works to prioritise the transmittance of knowledge. Naturally,thus invites scrutiny, especially given the context of Hassan being a creative himself, with such a standing (as a literary critic and creative writer) thefunction that immediately springs to mind is whether Hassan heeds his own callIn the light, this article will analyse one of Hassan's works based on his ownanalytical framework--Persuratan Baru--in an effort to determine whether thecontruction of said work truly takes into account his own identification of thefunction of literary works, that is as a medium of knowledge. Hassan's novelPujangga Melayu (1997) will be the study material, with the employment ofthe anlytical framework of Persuratan Baru. By using Persuratan Baru whichdistinguishes between 'knowledge' (ilmu) and 'narrative' (cerita) as an analytical frame work, my findings answer the question brought up earlier that Hassanhas indeed practiced what he has preached, by presenting Pujangga Melayu asa contens manifestation of his literary notion Persuratan Baru'.

Because of his great service, he was declared a national hero not only by the government of Indonesia but also by South African government. His thoughts regarding tasawuf are reflected in his works. A comprehensive research is needed on this important figure in order is reveal one part the intelectual history of our nation.

Abstract

The memayu hayuning bawana in Javanese society is much inspired by the poetic expression of a dalang and a poet. At the time the dalang performs seclusion and janturan, often revealing that context. Recognized or not, this phrase is one of the Javanese philosophy of life. The phrase has a sacred power that became the philosophy of believers. Memayu hayuning bawana revealed through literary texts, can be interpreted using the perspective of literary eco-anthropology. In the perspective of literary eco-anthropology, memayu hayuning bawana is a philosophical idea of the Javanese, to achieve peace of life. Not a bit of traditional or classical Javanese poetry that contains the concept of bayu hayuning bawana. This concept is an attempt by the Javanese to maintain the harmony, welfare, and peace of human life with the universe. In the pantun and tembang dolanan Jawa also contains the context of memayu hayuning bawana. The essence of the philosophy of life to lure hayuning bawana is to civilize the green culture in the universe. The green culture revealed through Javanese poetry is meant to preserve the universe. Pengayu hayuning bawana is an effort to reach the peak of life serenity. Even this phrase becomes a provision to reach manunggaling kawula-Gusti, when humans go to sangkan paraning dumadi.
