Abstract

Cynicism, apathy, inddiference and the like usually accompany the implementation of a new curriculum. The anecdote, "a new minister, a new curriculum” is often heard. Is the ever-changing curriculum meant to create a setback in our education? Of course not. From the perspective of instrumental input, the quality of teachers in Indonesia can safely be said to be low, whereas teachers are the ones who are in charge of implementing the curriculum in the classroom. What about teachers of language and literature? Some articles have revealed that many literature teachers are not keen on reading literature, lag behind in the development of the area, poorly appreciate the dynamics of literature, and many are even foreed to teach literature because they happen to be language teachers.Teachers who only rely on the knowledge or reading they obtained during their school years are definitely not good teachers. The leaming of literature should be far from boredom and fear. Democratization or the process of gaining the freedom of expression essentially begin with the enjoyment and appreciation of literature. There are various tips that can be suggested, such as integrating the teaching of literature and the surrounding environment, class discussion that is not based on the true-false approach, making use of literary texts that have undergone a transfromative process, doing away with the dichotomy of "high" literature and "popular" literature, and students producing their own works to stimulate creativity. By learning and exploring the learning material bascd on necessity and the dynamics of both students and the invironment, there will be a well-patterned method and teaching strategy.

Abstract

When we use the term ‘Word Literature’, what comes into our minds is the meaning of the two words, what is meant by World – Literature? We can browse through the internet and try to find the meaning of this phrase in the cyber world, but can all definitions and lists of works from the many writers in the sites actually be acknowledged as World Literature? Moreover, if we try to explore the two words, does ‘literature’ only refer to literary works or all kinds of literature including books? The next word is ‘world’ of course has its own problem because we do not actually kniw whether it means the whole world in which every single literary work on earth is considered as world literature or it only refers to certain parts of the world like Europe and America. The phrase Weltliteratur was first articulated by a German Writer, Wieland, in the contect of world culture that privileges literary works in order to bring people to the world. It was quite different when Goethe used this phrase in his letter to Karl Streckfub, a translator of Italian classical works on 27 January 1927, and Goethe used that phrase again in his conversation with Johann Peter Eckermann, a young man who did some internship with him, on 31 January 1831. Goethe used the word Welt in a context of literature beyond the national context, literature outside German across national boundaries. Goethe articulated it by saying:“I am more convinced,” Goethe remarked, “that poetry is the universal possession of mankind, revealing itself everywhere and at all times in hundreds and hundreds of men… I therefore like to look about me in foreign nations, and advise everyone to do the same. National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of world literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach.”The term used by Goethe gives out a modern sense which suits the globalize era where we live now. In this case, Goethe seemed to be ahead of his time in making a literary contribution.

Abstract

There is no doubt that young adult dystopian novels are popular among their audience. Young adult dystopian novels offer readers a fictional medium to reimagine societal values, including, but not limited to, gender. In the 2010s, titles such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Legend rose to fame as they amassed millions of readers, further strengthening the genre’s popularity and influence among young adults. This article will specifically analyze the Legend (2011) trilogy by Marie Lu, a series of dystopian novels set in the post-apocalyptic United States. Using concepts of gender binary opposition and possibilities-potentialities, this article aims to uncover the trilogy’s attempt at reconstructing gender identity by presenting non-traditional roles in its story, notably in its depiction of the main character and supporting characters. The article will identify gendered representations within the trilogy, analyze whether the representations are consistent throughout the story, and study its underlying message concerning values present in the real world. Based on the analysis, this article found that the Legend trilogy tend to reproduce existing realities that already exist in the real world. However, it still offers a layered, non-traditional representation of both masculine and feminine gender identity through its characters.

Abstract

Abstract

The end of the New Order era in 1998 had given birth to a new generation of young woman writers, who had played an important role in arousing readers attention to woman body and sexuality. However, an important aspect that is often forgotten in the works of those writers is the way they view the nation. Do they offer a new imagining of the nation, that is free from the heritage of the New Order integrationistic point of view? This paper discusses the works of two middle-class urban woman writers, Nukila Amal and Djenar Maesa Ayu, by focusing on how their writings were influenced by their urban experience, and how they used this experience as a stepping stone to dig possible re-imaginings of the nation. An effort to re-define nation in the framework of urbanism is shown in both Nukila's and Djenar's works; however, the question is whether the emergence of these post-reformation woman writers indicates the broken relationship with views about nation planted by the old regime, or, instead. presents an old idea dressed up in a new costume. The works which will be discussed in this paper are Cala Ibi (Nukila Amal) and Jangan Main-main (dengan Kelaminmu) (Djenar Maesa Ayu).

Abstract

Abstract

First Love short story by Mo Yan tells of the first love story of a 9-year-old male student named Jin Tou to a woman who is older than him. The three previous studies that have discussed this short story all emphasize strong intrinsic elements of the story, namely characters and characterizations. They state that the important characters of the story are Jin Tou, Zhang Ruolan and Du Fenyu, Jin Tou's first love is a mixture of innocence, bitterness and happiness played by the boy who has a strange, lonely and unfortunate character. After being traced, and studied using an intrinsic approach and referring to sources outside the short story, it is revealed that the problem discussed in the short story is about class issues represented by each character in the story. The depiction of social class presented is a representation of the problems that have occurred in China. The short story First Love takes place in the history and social conditions of China in the period after the end of the Cultural Revolution and the reopening of schools in China. This short story also presents how Mo Yan as the author sees the conditions after the Cultural Revolution in China as part of the history conveyed through the love story of Jin Tou's character.

Abstract

The exponential growth of video games in popular culture has been piquing scholars' attention for years. Video games are unique compared to other media as they provide interactive experience for the users by giving them the power to choose. It has been argued that mythologies and belief systems play an important role in video games, wherein they act as referents to which video games are based on. This study aims to research how the major belief system in Dragon Age: Origins (2009) is interconnected with the in-game racial hierarchy. Using textual analysis as the method, the game narrative and mechanics are studied in order to pinpoint the connection between institutionalized religion and racism. The findings show that there are complex relations between racism and institutionalized religion. Through time, the study of religious racism and our understanding of religiosity evolved. Although there is no explicit positive correlation between the two, it is not entirely unrelated either. We must be careful not to oppose religion itself, but to criticize the other dynamics that come into play such as power and money.

Abstract

Chinese society is a part of Indonesian society. Chinese people or now familiar with Tionghoa names in Indonesia are an ethnic part that is recognized in the law. Although it has received recognition from the government, there are still many negative views about the Chinese community. Chinese ethnic women also experience injustice. The injustice experienced by ethnic Chinese women is caused by the constructs of the Chinese community which adheres to patriarchy. This study aims to describe the forms of struggle of ethnic Tinghoa women leaders to end injustice in novel Pecinan: Suara Hati Tionghoa by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim. This study uses a liberal feminist theory that emphasizes equality between men and women. The results of this study are (1) efforts to educate women through education, (2) women must be economically independent, and (3) women's actions against adultery.
