Abstract

Cotton candy is a popular snack, especially among children. To improve its appearance, food coloring is commonly added. However, the illegal use of textile dyes such as Rhodamine B in food remains a public health concern in Indonesia. Rhodamine B is a synthetic dye prohibited for food use due to its harmful health effects. Data on Rhodamine Bsdegh contamination in cotton candy sold in Jambi City are still limited. To identify the presence of Rhodamine B in cotton candy sold in Jambi City. This study is a descriptive study using a qualitative laboratory approach. Samples were obtained from 32 cotton candy vendors selling at several locations in Jambi City. The examination included observation of the color characteristics and appearance of the cotton candy as well as identification of Rhodamine B content using a LabTest brand Rapid Test Kit. Of all the cotton candy samples tested, none tested positive for Rhodamine B (0%). Based on color characteristics, 97.1%  had normal color and 2,9% sample had abnormal color. Based on appearance characteristics, 97.1%  samples showed a normal appearance and 2.9% sample showed an abnormal appearance characterized by non-homogeneous color and a clumpy texture. All cotton candy samples sold in Jambi City tested negative for Rhodamine B. Most samples exhibited normal color and appearance characteristics, although one sample was found to have abnormal physical characteristics.

Abstract

Medication adherence is a crucial factor in the successful management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly among older adults who are more vulnerable to treatment failure due to age-related physiological decline and multiple comorbidities. This study aimed to determine the level of medication adherence and analyze the factors associated with medication adherence behavior among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Kembaran 1 Primary Health Center. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design involving 62 older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus selected using a total sampling technique. Medication adherence was assessed using the Medication Adherence Rating Scale-10 (MARS-10), while the associations between variables were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that 64.5% of the respondents had a high level of medication adherence, whereas 35.5% demonstrated low adherence. Bivariate analysis revealed that age (p = 0.008), educational level (p = 0.021), employment status (p = 0.013), body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.015), and type of antidiabetic therapy (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with medication adherence behavior. In contrast, sex (p = 0.675), duration of diabetes mellitus (p = 0.510), and the presence of comorbidities (p = 0.519) were not significantly associated with medication adherence. These findings indicate that medication adherence among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus is influenced by sociodemographic factors, clinical characteristics, and treatment-related factors. Identifying these determinants may serve as a basis for developing intervention strategies to improve medication adherence and optimize therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract

Anemia remains one of the major public health problems among female adolescents worldwide and negatively affects physical growth, academic performance, productivity, and reproductive health. Iron (Fe) tablet supplementation has been implemented in Indonesia as an effective strategy to prevent iron deficiency anemia among adolescent girls; however, compliance with iron tablet consumption remains relatively low. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge of anemia and school support with compliance in iron (Fe) tablet consumption among female adolescents at SMAN 1 Tirawuta, East Kolaka Regency. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design involving 132 female adolescents selected through proportional random sampling from a population of 198 students. Data were collected using a knowledge of anemia questionnaire, a school support questionnaire, and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results indicated that 78.8% of respondents had good knowledge of anemia, 82.6% reported inadequate school support, and 71.2% were non-adherent to iron tablet consumption. Significant relationships were found between knowledge of anemia and adherence to iron tablet consumption consumption (p < 0.000) and between school support and compliance with iron tablet consumption (p = 0.006). The findings highlight the importance of strengthening health education and school-based support systems to improve adolescents' compliance with iron supplementation programs.

Abstract

Nutritional status is a key determinant of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children, since inadequate nutrition heightens the likelihood of this condition developing. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional status and the occurrence of IDA among children. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was carried out using secondary data drawn from the medical records of 93 pediatric patients (aged 0–19 years) treated at RSUD Raden Mattaher and RSUD Abdul Manap, Jambi. Nutritional status was classified according to WHO reference standards, and IDA was diagnosed through the Mentzer Index. The Chi-Square test was applied for statistical analysis. The sample was predominantly male (58.1%), most frequently aged 0–11 months (34.4%), and largely categorized as having poor nutritional status (45.2%). IDA was present in 65.6% of the children studied. A statistically significant relationship was found between nutritional status and IDA occurrence (p=0.000), with children exhibiting abnormal nutritional status facing an approximately 11-fold greater risk (p<0.05) of IDA relative to normally nourished children.
