Abstract

Dragon scale fern leaves (Pyrrosia piloselloides (L.) M.G. Price) are epiphytic plants containing alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and tannins with photoprotective potential. This study aimed to formulate ethanol extract of dragon scale fern leaves into foundation cream preparations at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%, and to determine the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values. Physical quality evaluations included homogeneity, stability, pH, emulsion type, spreadability, absorption rate, irritation test, and hedonic test. SPF values were determined using direct sunlight exposure and UV-Vis spectrophotometry (290–320 nm). All formulas produced homogeneous, stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion preparations with pH 6.5–6.8, spreadability 5–7 cm, and caused no irritation. UV-Vis spectrophotometry yielded SPF values of 12.5–19 (Maximum–Ultra category), while the direct sunlight method yielded SPF 1.6–2.3. Formula F3 (1.5%) was the optimal formulation with the highest SPF of 19 (Ultra) and fastest absorption rate of 18 seconds, and was most preferred by panelists.

Abstract

Vaginal discharge (fluor albus) is one of the most common reproductive health problems experienced by adolescent girls. Inadequate knowledge of genital hygiene may increase the risk of pathological discharge and affect both physical and psychological well-being. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge of reproductive organ hygiene and the prevention of vaginal discharge among ninth-grade female students at SMP Negeri 19 Medan in 2026. A quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach was used. The sample consisted of 56 respondents drawn from a population of 128 students using purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Spearman Rank test at α = 0.05. The results showed that knowledge was mostly in the sufficient (42.9%) and good (39.3%) categories, while prevention behavior was mostly in the sufficient category (55.4%). The Spearman Rank test yielded p = 0.013 (< 0.05) and r = 0.329, indicating a statistically significant, positive, and weak correlation. Better knowledge tended to be accompanied by better preventive behavior. Schools and health workers are encouraged to provide continuous reproductive health education to strengthen preventive behavior.

Abstract

Medication errors are preventable events that can cause inappropriate drug use and patient harm. Diabetes mellitus patients are particularly at risk due to long-term therapy, combination antidiabetic regimens, and comorbid medications. This study aimed to determine the incidence, risk factors, dominant factor, and severity level (based on NCC MERP classification) of medication errors in antidiabetic prescriptions. Using a quantitative observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach, data were collected prospectively through prescription review (for prescribing errors) and dispensing service observation (for dispensing errors). From a population of 1,938 prescriptions (January–April 2026), 366 were sampled. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate (Chi-square), and multivariate (binary logistic regression) methods. Results showed prescribing errors in 157 prescriptions (42.9%) and dispensing errors in 17 (4.6%), with overall medication errors occurring in 160 prescriptions (43.7%); all fell under NCC MERP Category B (error occurred but did not reach the patient). Number of drug items (p=0.006) and type of antidiabetic therapy (p=0.004) were significantly associated with errors, while comorbid medication use was not (p=0.559). Logistic regression identified number of drug items as the most dominant factor (OR≈4.63 for ≥5 items, p=0.010); therapy type remained significant (p=0.012). The study concludes pharmacies should strengthen prescription review and double-checking, especially for prescriptions with ≥5 drug items and oral-insulin combination therapy.

Abstract

Since ancient times, hair has been referred to as a woman's crown. Hair plays an important role in appearance, as it not only serves to protect the head but also enhances one's overall appearance. One of the hair characteristics that contributes to an attractive appearance is hair color. Avocado leaves (Persea americana L.) are one of the plant parts that have potential as a natural coloring agent because they contain various chemical compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and steroids/triterpenoids. This study aimed to formulate avocado leaf ethanol extract into a gel preparation as a healthy and economically valuable alternative natural hair dye. The study was conducted by preparing avocado leaf ethanol extract using the maceration method with 80% ethanol, followed by phytochemical screening. Hair dye gel formulations containing avocado leaf ethanol extract at concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30% were prepared. The evaluation of the physical quality of the hair dye preparations, effectiveness testing, skin irritation testing on human volunteers, and preference testing were also conducted. The results showed that avocado leaf extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and steroids/triterpenoids. The 10%, 20%, and 30% avocado leaf ethanol extract formulations could be formulated into hair dye gel preparations because they demonstrated good physical quality and produced light brown and dark brown colors.

Abstract

Dry skin is a common dermatological problem caused by decreased water content in the stratum corneum. Natural ingredients rich in water and secondary metabolites are being explored as alternatives to synthetic moisturizers. This study aimed to formulate a moisturizer gel containing pear fruit juice (Pyrus communis L.) at 5%, 10%, and 15% concentrations and to evaluate its physical characteristics and moisturizing effectiveness. The study was designed as a laboratory experiment. Pear juice was extracted from fresh fruit, screened for secondary metabolites, and formulated into four gels (F0 blank; F1–F3 containing 5%, 10%, and 15% pear juice) using carbopol as the gelling agent. Physical evaluation included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, spreadability, and irritation tests on six volunteers. Skin moisture was measured on six volunteers per formula over four weeks using a skin analyzer. Phytochemical screening detected alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, saponins, and steroids/triterpenoids. All formulas were homogeneous, non-irritant, had pH between 5.8 and 6.2, adhesion above 4 seconds, and spreadability between 6.2 and 6.7 cm. Mean moisture increase in week four was 37.84% (blank), 49.73% (5%), 56.10% (10%), and 72.11% (15%). The findings indicate that pear juice can be formulated as a moisturizer gel and shows a trend of increasing skin moisture with higher concentrations.

Abstract

Rice is a major staple food and an important source of carbohydrates. Its safety can be affected by environmental contaminants, including lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), which may enter agricultural areas through fertilizers, pesticides, industrial activities, and other waste sources. This study evaluated the occurrence and concentrations of Cd and Pb in rice originating from Sidrap Regency. Rice samples were collected from four geographic directions and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The measured Cd concentrations were 0.0387 µg/g in sample A (North), 0.0401 µg/g in sample B (West), 0.0238 µg/g in sample C (South), and 0.0207 µg/g in sample D (East). All Cd concentrations were below the applicable maximum limit. Pb concentrations were 0.1093 µg/g, 0.1255 µg/g, and 0.1661 µg/g for samples A, B, and C, respectively, whereas sample D contained 0.3219 µg/g and exceeded the maximum limit. Thus, Cd concentrations in all examined samples complied with the applicable standard, while the Pb concentration in sample D indicates contamination that warrants continued monitoring of rice safety.

Abstract

Cesarean section is a surgical delivery procedure that continues to increase every year and carries the risk of postoperative complications, one of which is impaired wound healing. Suboptimal wound healing may increase the risk of infection, prolong hospitalization, and add to treatment costs. Early mobilization is a recommended nursing intervention to accelerate recovery by improving blood circulation and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the wound tissue. This study aimed to examine the relationship between early mobilization and the wound healing process in patients following cesarean section at RSU Bunda Thamrin Medan. A quantitative descriptive study with a non-experimental approach was conducted on 40 respondents selected through accidental sampling from 22 December 2025 to 30 January 2026. Data were collected using a validated 15-item questionnaire on early mobilization and an observation sheet for wound healing, and were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results showed that 24 respondents (60.0%) performed early mobilization in the good category and 29 respondents (72.5%) experienced good wound healing. The statistical test produced a p-value of 0.029 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between early mobilization and the wound healing process. Early mobilization should be applied in a structured and consistent manner as part of postoperative nursing care.

Abstract

Diabetic ulcers are open wounds on the surface of the skin caused by macroangiopathy, resulting in vascular insufficiency and neuropathy. Diabetic ulcers occur due to damage to nerves and blood vessels due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels so that the condition gets worse. The bacteria commonly isolated from diabetic ulcer infections are Gram-positive and Gram-negative. The research entitled identification of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria in diabetic ulcers in the Bunda Thamrin Medan Clinical Laboratory aims to identify the presence or absence of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, as well as to find out which bacteria are the main contaminants in diabetic ulcers. The presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria that are left without further action, resulting in nerve damage that extends to the bones can lead to amputation. This type of research is descriptive and qualitative with the method of isolation and identification of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria. The results of the research from 20 samples carried out, there were samples with positive results for the presence of Gram negative bacteria, namely Klebsiella pneumoniae as many as 7 (35%) were identified, and the bacteria which were the main pollutant were samples with positive results for Gram positive bacteria, namely Staphylococcus sp as many as 11 (55%) identified. Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria occur due to the presence of a microorganism in tissue or body fluids that are contaminated due to open wounds and are dominant through environmental factors.

Abstract

The fashion industry's rapid growth has intensified environmental pressure through non-degradable textile waste, driving the emergence of the Eco-fashion concept that reuses natural waste as raw material. Kelurahan Maesa UNIMA in South Tondano Subdistrict, North Sulawesi, produces abundant plant waste from horticulture and home yards, yet its utilisation remains limited to burning or composting. This study aims to identify types of plant waste, describe the process of producing accessories from plant waste with epoxy resin preservation, and evaluate the products' feasibility, durability, and aesthetics. The research applies a Research and Development (R&D) method, adapting the Borg and Gall model into six simplified stages: potential and problems, data collection, product design, design validation, design revision, and product trial. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, then analysed descriptively. Four fashion-design experts assessed product quality using eleven indicators, alongside twenty user respondents. The final quality assessment reached 0.936 (Very Good) from experts and 0.930 (Very Good) from users, while feasibility scored 0.90 (Very Feasible). These findings imply that plant waste can be transformed into Eco-fashion accessories of high aesthetic and economic value while supporting environmental sustainability and community-based creative economy.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion or action. Long-term use of synthetic antidiabetic drugs has the potential to cause side effects, making natural treatment alternatives necessary. A combination of ginger, galangal, and turmeric rhizomes contains secondary metabolites that may help lower blood glucose levels. To determine the effectiveness of a tea made from a combination of ginger, galangal, and turmeric rhizomes in lowering blood glucose levels in male white mice with alloxan-induced diabetes and to identify the most effective dose. This in vivo experimental study used 30 male white mice divided into six groups: K, KN, KP, K1, K2, and K3. Blood glucose levels were measured on days 0, 3, 7, and 14, then analyzed using a one-way ANOVA followed by an LSD test. Administration of the tea blend of ginger, galangal, and turmeric significantly reduced blood glucose levels (p < 0.05). On day 14, blood glucose levels decreased to 91.25 mg/dL in group K3, 108.25 mg/dL in group KP, and 88.25 mg/dL in group K; the blood glucose level in group K3 was lower than that in group KP and approached that of group K. The tea blend of ginger, galangal, and turmeric rhizomes was effective in lowering blood glucose levels at a dose of 600 mg/kg body weight, which was found to be the most effective dose.
