Abstract

This study addresses learning challenges, including student learning difficulties and the ineffective use of lecture-based methods, which result in boredom, disengagement, and low student participation. These issues contribute to poor learning outcomes and low completion rates. The aim of this study is to improve student independence and enhance both average scores and the percentage of learning completion by implementing the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. This aligns with the principles of the flexible Independent Curriculum, which encourages teachers to adopt student-centered learning approaches that enhance outcomes. The study employed a descriptive-qualitative method, structured in two cycles consisting of planning, implementation, evaluation, and reflection. The research involved eight 8th-grade students at SMPN 1 Biatan during the 2024/2025 academic year. The study focused on developing the "independent" dimension of the Pancasila Student Profile (P3), with data collected through behavioral observations and test results at the end of each cycle. Findings showed significant improvements in student independence, with scores increasing from 53 in cycle 1 to 87 in cycle 2. Cognitive achievement levels also improved: the “advanced” category rose from 0% to 63%, “proficient” increased from 25% to 37.5%, while the “feasible” and “newly developing” categories dropped from 37.5% each to 0%. These results suggest that the PBL model positively impacts both character development and academic performance in the context of Catholic religious education, particularly in the topic of the Sacrament of Healing.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' learning outcomes by implementing the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model supported by the Mind Mapping method in the Catholic Religious Education and Character Education subject for class XI students at SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observation sheets of learning implementation and questionnaires to assess students' learning outcomes. The results of the learning implementation observation showed significant improvement, from 57.8% in cycle 1 to 64.7% in cycle 2. Furthermore, the average score of students' learning outcomes in the daily assessment of the Church and World material increased from 80 in the pre-cycle, to 87.27 in cycle 1, and 90.98 in cycle 2. Students' responses to the use of this method also showed an increase in satisfaction, with 97% in cycle 1 and 100% in cycle 2. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the PBL model supported by the Mind Mapping method is effective in improving students' learning outcomes and enhancing students' interest and satisfaction in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of godparents in accompanying the faith development of children at Saint Joseph Parish Gedangan, Semarang. The role of godparents is not merely symbolic during the baptismal ceremony, but also entails an ongoing responsibility to guide children toward maturity in faith. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design involving ten informants, consisting of the parish priest, catechists, godparents, and baptized children. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic analysis methods. The findings indicate that the understanding and implementation of the godparents’ role develop in accordance with experience and social context. Godparents function as spiritual companions, role models of lived faith, and part of the child’s faith support system. Geographical distance and social mobility emerged as major challenges affecting the effectiveness of accompaniment. These findings emphasize the need for continuous formation for godparents, their integration into the parish pastoral system, and close collaboration between godparents, parents, and catechists. This study contributes theoretically to the development of studies on the sacraments of initiation and offers practical contributions for the Church in strengthening pastoral models of children’s faith accompaniment.

Abstract

The critical thinking ability of students in Catholic Religious Education at SMP Negeri 2 Delang class VIII is still relatively low. Students also struggle to connect the narrative of the Holy Bible with real-life experiences. This study aims to improve students' critical thinking skills and academic performance through the application of the Experiential Narrative Method supported by visual media. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of the study were 5 class VIII students (2 male and 3 female) during the odd semester from September to November 2024. The material in cycle I focused on the Passion and Death of Jesus as a symbol of human rejection, while in cycle II, the Resurrection of Jesus was used as a symbol of the Father’s acceptance. Data were collected through observations to assess critical thinking skills, and cognitive aspects were measured through written tests. The results showed significant improvement in the students’ critical thinking process. The average cognitive test scores increased from the initial test (63.60), to 75.60 in cycle I, and 82.8 in cycle II, reaching the target of 100% mastery. Student engagement also increased, moving from a less active category to very active. This study concludes that the experiential narrative method, enriched with visual media, is highly effective in enhancing critical thinking skills, cognitive learning outcomes, and overall student engagement.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the dilemma faced by Catholic mothers who play dual roles as pillars of their families and formal servants in their parishes. Although the Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio affirms the family as the domestic church, the integration of domestic and public vocations often causes theological and practical tensions. The purpose of this study is to phenomenologically explore these women's experiences in integrating their roles, understand the internal conflicts that arise, and discover the sources of their resilience. Using a qualitative approach and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews with four women ministers (catechists/pro-deacons) at St. Joseph Parish in Gedangan. The findings reveal that role integration is achieved through scheduling strategies and the fair division of domestic responsibilities. Inner conflict is mainly experienced by mothers with young children or single parents, which is compounded by “structural sin” in the form of patriarchal expectations and exploitative ministry practices. Their perseverance is based on the experience of "finite grace" manifested through family support and community solidarity. This study concludes that the struggles of female ministers constitute an embodied theology, in which spirituality is shaped by everyday limitations. As a result, the Church is encouraged to develop gender-sensitive pastoral policies and support relational justice within families, so that mothers' vocations both at home and in the community can be integrated in a joyful and liberating way.

Abstract

Many educational institutions still rely on uniform instructional methods, which often diminish student motivation, cause feelings of monotony, hinder knowledge development, lower academic performance, and limit opportunities for creative exploration. This study aims to: (1) assess the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PJBL) model compared to traditional lecture-based instruction in enhancing student achievement; (2) investigate the influence of PJBL on students' creativity relative to the lecture method; and (3) examine the extent to which creativity contributes to overall learning outcomes. This research uses an experimental design comparing two groups of students: one taught using the PJBL model and the other using traditional lecture-based instruction. Data were collected through achievement tests, questionnaires, and observations of students' creative works. The results show that students who engaged in PJBL-based learning showed significant improvement in both academic performance and creativity compared to those in the lecture-based learning group. Additionally, creativity was found to positively contribute to overall learning outcomes. This study suggests that the implementation of the PJBL model can be an effective alternative to enhance student motivation, academic performance, and creative skills.

Abstract

Girisonta Parish, with Saint Stanislaus as its patron and inspired by the spirit of Saint Ignatius, aims to cultivate the Ignatian spirit among its parishioners. However, this spirit has not been significantly evident, as reflected in the low involvement of young people in church services. This study explores the role of Ignatian Spirituality in enhancing the participation of Young Catholics (OMK) in services at Saint Stanislaus Church, Girisonta Parish. Ignatian Spirituality, rooted in the teachings and spiritual experiences of Saint Ignatius Loyola, has the potential to strengthen the motivation, commitment, and quality of service among young people in the church environment. Using a qualitative research method with a case study approach, data was gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis of parish records. The findings indicate that the application of Ignatian Spirituality elements, such as contemplation, reflection, and action, along with other values, positively impacts the spiritual awareness, sense of belonging, and service-oriented mindset of OMK. This study also identifies the challenges in integrating Ignatian Spirituality into youth pastoral efforts and provides practical recommendations for developing youth programs based on Ignatian Spirituality. The contribution of this study lies in offering both a theoretical and practical framework for strengthening Catholic youth ministry through a transformative and spiritually rich approach.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the role-play learning method in increasing student learning activeness in the subject of Catholic Religious Education. The background of this research is the low level of student participation and engagement during classroom learning, particularly in expressing values, responding to questions, and participating in discussions. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles involving students of Grade VII at SMP Negeri 3 Tujuh Belas, Bengkayang. The method employed consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection in each cycle. Data were collected using observation sheets, student activity assessments, and reflection notes. The findings are expected to show that the role-play method encourages students to be more active, expressive, and participatory in learning activities. The implications of this research highlight the importance of interactive, student-centered learning models in strengthening the internalization of religious values and improving learning dynamics in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the learning outcomes of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 14 Huta Hotang in the subject of Catholic Religious Education and Character, specifically focusing on the topic "The Ten Commandments," through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method. The objective is to enhance students' understanding of the Ten Commandments while incorporating the values of Pancasila. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection on the Pancasila student profile. The results revealed significant improvements in students' learning and understanding of "The Ten Commandments." In the pre-cycle, the average student scores were below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM), with seven students—five (62.5%) did not meet the standard, and two (37.5%) achieved mastery. After applying the Pancasila student profile, improvements were observed in both Cycle I and Cycle II, with Cycle II meeting the target outcomes. Besides academic improvements, the study also highlighted positive developments in various aspects of the Pancasila student profile, such as Faith in God Almighty and Noble Character, Global Diversity, Cooperation, Independence, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. The implementation of the PBL method was effective in improving students' learning outcomes in Catholic Religious Education and Character, particularly in understanding "The Ten Commandments," for fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 14 Huta Hotang.

Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology presents significant opportunities for transforming educational practices: personalization, rapid formative feedback, and administrative efficiency. However, AI adoption in schools also brings challenges related to values, including the potential erosion of students' positive character: dependency on automated tools, tendencies toward plagiarism, weakening of moral obligations toward academic honesty, and diminished critical thinking skills regarding AI-generated content. This article conducts a conceptual study and policy literature review to (a) map the relationship between AI adoption and student character issues; (b) identify the factors contributing to the character crisis in AI utilization; and (c) formulate pedagogical intervention strategies, school policies, and research agendas to address these challenges. Key recommendations include integrating AI literacy and digital ethics into the curriculum, strengthening teacher capacity through practice-based training, designing policies that place humans in control of the learning process, and fostering collaboration between policymakers, education practitioners, and technology developers to ensure that AI enhances, rather than replaces, character development.
