Abstract

Oral literature is a form of storytelling from one individual to another in a concise manner as a representation of a society's culture. One type that is interesting to study in this field is legends. This study examines the Keong Mas legend using Burhan Nurgiyantoro's structuralism approach theory, which focuses on analyzing the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic elements in literary works. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method that aims to reveal the narrative structure and social and cultural meanings contained in the legend as a reflection of the moral values and local wisdom of the people of East Java. The information collection method used observation and note-taking. The results of the analysis show that the Keong Mas legend has a cohesive story structure, including theme, characters, plot, setting, and point of view, which simultaneously reflect the values of loyalty, justice, and family conflict in a socio-cultural context. These findings confirm the relevance of oral literature as a medium for the inheritance of living and evolving cultural values, and contribute to the understanding of cultural identity and literary aesthetics in Indonesia, especially in the East Java region.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lexical variations that emerge based on gender factor within the sociolinguistic context of SMP Bintang Persada Denpasar. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the observational method and note-taking technique by presenting a list of glosses to 20 eight-grade students, consisting of 10 male and 10 female participants. The lexical data were analyzed using the intralingual and extralingual comparison methods. The findings reveal significant lexical differences between the two speaker groups. Female student tend to use more varied, complete, and expressive lexical forms, including full words and phrasal expressions. In contrast, male students show a tendency to use shorter, more efficient lexical forms dominated by abbreviations and rough expressions. These findings highlight that gender functions as a linguistic marker shaping distinct communicative patterns among adolescents, with female students prioritizing social expression and affection, while male students emphasize practicality and efficiency in language use.

Abstract

Film as a cultural text never exists independently but is always connected to previous texts that form a network of meanings. The phenomenon of film remakes demonstrates a strong intertextual relationship, as seen in My Annoying Brother in its South Korean and Indonesian versions. This study examines the intertextual relationship between the two films and analyzes the ways the story is reworked within different social and cultural contexts. The purpose of this research is to investigate the intertextual relations between the South Korean version as the source text and the Indonesian version as the transformed text by applying the concepts of opposition, transposition, and transformation. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using an observation method through careful and repeated film viewing, accompanied by note-taking of important dialogues and significant scenes. The research data consist of narrative elements of the films, including plot, characters, conflict, setting, and cultural values. The findings reveal that although both films share similar narrative structures and central conflicts, the Indonesian version incorporates local cultural adaptations that generate new meanings within the context of cross-cultural film remakes.

Abstract

Referring to Abdul Chaer’s semantic theory, this study aims to explain the denotative and connotative meanings contained in the lyrics of the song “Sorai” by Nadin Amizah. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method and uses content analysis techniques to identify words, phrases, and sentences in the lyrics that contain denotative and connotative meanings. The findings of this study indicate that the connotative meaning is more dominant and is manifested through the use of natural symbols and emotional expressions that represent human relationships, the process of healing inner wounds, sincerity, and acceptance of true love. This study found that the lyrics of the song “Sorai” not only function as a way to convey messages literally, but also as a way to express deep feelings. Therefore, by using Abdul Chaer’s theory, song lyrics can reveal layers of meaning and demonstrate the power of language as an emotional and aesthetic medium in musical works.

Abstract

Enforced disappearance during the New Order era represents a historical reality that has left profound wounds and prolonged uncertainty for both the victims and the families left behind. This reality is powerfully represented in Laut Bercerita, a novel by Leila S. Chudori, through the use of symbolic and evocative literary language. This study aims to reveal the representation of enforced disappearance through the use of figures of speech and metaphors in the novel. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a stylistic approach. The data consist of narrative excerpts containing figures of speech and metaphors related to experiences of loss, suffering, memory, and resistance. Data collection was conducted through intensive reading and systematic note-taking, while data analysis involved classifying types of figures of speech and interpreting their contextual meanings. The findings indicate that metaphors of the sea, silence, darkness, and alienation play a crucial role in constructing the representation of enforced disappearance as a traumatic experience that is not only physical but also psychological and collective in nature. The use of figurative language strengthens the narrative’s expressive power in conveying criticism of state violence while simultaneously preserving the memory of humanitarian tragedies that are often marginalized. This study implies that literary works can function as reflective media and as cultural documentation of histories of violence.

Abstract

Abbreviation is a common linguistic strategy used to achieve efficiency and clarity in modern communication. This study examines the abbreviation systems of English and Indonesian through a contrastive linguistic approach, focusing on morphological patterns, phonological constraints, and usage conventions. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected from established linguistic references and analyzed using classical contrastive analysis principles. The findings reveal that English abbreviation formation is structurally flexible, allowing both pronounceable acronyms and non-pronounceable initialisms, often maintaining complex consonant clusters and orthographic capitalization. In contrast, Indonesian abbreviation formation is strongly influenced by phonological preferences, particularly ease of pronunciation and conformity to open syllable structures, resulting in forms that closely resemble ordinary lexical items. These structural differences suggest potential sources of negative transfer for language learners and challenges in translation practices. The study concludes that abbreviation systems are shaped not only by linguistic rules but also by sociocultural and communicative needs. Understanding these contrasts is essential for language teaching, translation, and further comparative linguistic research.

Abstract

This study aims to carry out a thorough analysis of the use of stylistic elements, particularly in terms of diction and language style, as applied by Pitoyo Amrih to shape the character of Gatotkaca in the novel Sisi Gelap Gatotkaca. The character of Gatotkaca, traditionally depicted as a flawless heroic figure, is reimagined by the author through a more humanistic and reflective linguistic approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method alongside stylistic literary criticism, this article examines how linguistic units within the text serve as rhetorical tools to reveal internal conflicts, existential burdens, and the darker aspects of the main character. The analysis process involves identifying word choices that carry a melancholic tone as well as the prominent use of figurative language, including comparisons, contrasts, and emphatic statements. The findings indicate that the use of archaic and philosophical diction, combined with sharp irony and metaphor, effectively transforms the image of Gatotkaca from merely a symbol of physical strength into a representation of human psychological fragility. This research contributes to literary criticism by highlighting how an author’s language style can alter readers' perceptions of established myths within society's culture.
