Abstract

Amid a dynamic social change in modern times, religious leaders still carry out several critical societal roles and functions. The emergence of this situation is mainly due to the absence of new social institutions that can completely replace them. This study, therefore, aims to explain Labai's role as a religious and community figure in the Malay-Sambas community in West Kalimantan Province. This study uses Weber's concept of charisma to analyze the role and function of Labai in the Malay-Sambas society. A qualitative method with an ethnographic approach was applied to analyze the data collected through in-depth interviews with some Labai. The results of this study indicate that the charisma authority of Labai was built with the legitimacy of the Malay-Sambas community who positioned Labai as a public figure who not only played a role as a religious figure in charge of providing religious understanding or religious doctrine to the community but also as a community figure who is always stand-by when its members needed help. In this case, Labai plays a vital role in maintaining local wisdom that has been preserved for generations in the Malay-Sambas community in West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Dawah plays a vital role in developing and disseminating Islam as it opens opportunities for Islamic teachings to be accepted and adapted in new environments with people from different cultures. In this context, Sufi preaching is one of the successful manifestations in the propagation of Islam due to its flexible nature, which is its characteristic feature. Therefore, this research aims to examine and identify the role of preaching in developing Sufism in East Kalimantan, particularly in the current era of globalization. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research approach, with research locations spread across several areas in East Kalimantan, including Samarinda, Kutai Kartanegara, Balikpapan, Kutai Timur, Bontang, and Paser. The research results indicate that the current societal conditions closely related to technological advancements and information necessitate the presence of more relevant forms of preaching. In this context, da'is are obliged to use digital media to convey Sufi teachings. They are expected to be proficient in utilizing technology to continue delivering their preaching in line with the progress of the times.

Abstract

Every religion has teachings related to the best ways to cope with problems, including those caused by natural disasters. Thus, natural disasters can reshape the construction of religious attitudes among the community. Therefore, this research aims to understand how natural disasters are perceived by religious leaders in the aftermath of earthquakes in Palu and Lombok and how these perceptions impact the community's views on ideal religious attitudes after a disaster. This research employs a phenomenological approach with thematic data analysis techniques applied to research data collected through interviews with various religious leaders and community members in Lombok Island and Palu City, two regions that experienced natural disaster events in 2018. The research findings suggest that, despite the resurgence of a back-to-nature sentiment following the disasters in Lombok, for the Wetu Telu Muslim community, this sentiment carries a deeper meaning than merely promoting an environmentally conscious way of life. It signifies a return to a way of life rooted in traditions passed down through generations, a way of life that has been eroded by the modernization brought about by the proselytizing efforts of the majority Muslim group over the past five decades. In Palu City, the earthquake and tsunami disaster in 2018 has also shaped the community's perception of disasters and influenced their religious behaviors in the post-disaster society. In general, three common perspectives were identified. First, a majority believes the disaster is a form of divine admonition from Allah due to various deviant behaviors in the society. Second, some believe the disaster is a result of the shifting of the Palu-Koro fault plates, an unavoidable natural event, grounded in empirical knowledge sources and disaster facts. Third, Muslim groups view the disaster as a test from Allah. These three perspectives have essentially shaped a unique religious attitude among the community expressed in various forms of religiosity.

Abstract

The technology available on social media provides various conveniences that can be utilized to optimize the implementation of Da’wah. One such technology is the editing feature. However, this feature can also cause the meaning of the message conveyed by the original content. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the perspective of preachers (da’i) on the phenomenon of manipulating da’wah content to conform to the format desired by social media platforms. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method in which data is obtained through in-depth interviews with six preachers who are postgraduate students at UIN Alauddin Makassar in 2022. The research results show that before spreading short-duration da’wah content on social media, preachers strive to understand the content by conducting discussions with other preachers, examining the content, and comparing content that has undergone editing (cutting) and original content. This is done as a precautionary measure to prevent misunderstandings among the audience and identify possible deviations caused by the editing process.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unparalleled challenges to individuals worldwide, resulting in substantial alterations in lifestyles. These alterations encompass the adoption of health protocols, such as social distancing and frequent handwashing. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that certain Sasak Muslim communities have opted for a distinctive approach in confronting the pandemic. Their chosen strategy revolves around the performance of rituals. These rituals, executed collectively, are perceived by the Sasak Muslim community as a means to counteract the global COVID-19 pandemic. To comprehensively explore the significance of these rituals within the Sasak Muslim community's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this qualitative research employs an ethnographic approach. The overarching goal is to gain insight into how these rituals are construed and employed by the community. The study's findings unveil that the Sasak Muslim community perceives the pandemic as a typical ailment, one that can be alleviated through a deepened connection with Allah. One of the primary methods through which this closeness is sought is an increased engagement in dhikr, which involves the remembrance of Allah, and prayers performed within the framework of specific rituals such as Selakaran.

Abstract

TikTok is a da'wah communication medium for preachers containing content related to religious teachings. Each da'wah content receives various responses and reflects an interactive communication model. Thus, this study aims to investigate the interactive communication model within religious preaching on TikTok. The study focuses on the responses of internet users to the religious leader Ustadz Syam's content, as featured on his TikTok account @syam_elmarusy. The primary data was gathered using a qualitative approach, employing the netnography method. The content analysis method with the interactivity theory was used for analysis. The findings suggest that interactivity in religious preaching on TikTok can be divided into three categories: user-to-system interactions (such as likes, views, and subscribers), user-to-user interactions (such as comments from internet users), and user-to-document interactions (such as sharing content with other users). The results illustrate the interconnected pattern of interactivity between internet users, the content creator, and the TikTok platform, where all parties reinforce and complement each other.

Abstract

Indonesian society exhibits a high level of complexity in terms of diversity, comprising numerous islands with diverse cultures, races, regional languages, ethnic groups, religions, and beliefs. This characteristic has earned Indonesia the distinction of being recognized as one of the world's largest multicultural countries. Given this context, it is unsurprising that conflicts between races, ethnicities, and religions frequently arise. Consequently, as Indonesian residents, it becomes imperative for Muslims to contemplate potential solutions. This study endeavors to address two primary research questions: 1) What is the depiction of a multicultural society as fostered by Prophet Muhammad? 2) What are the manifestations of da'wah bi al-ḥikmah (wisdom-driven propagation of Islam) undertaken by Prophet Muhammad? The research employs a qualitative approach, specifically relying on library research methods. The findings of this study reveal that 1) Prophet Muhammad laid the foundation for a society characterized by multicultural awareness, exemplified through the cultivation of religious tolerance, mutual respect for diversity, including ethnic disparities and social statuses, and the promotion of unity and brotherhood among individuals. 2) The forms of da'wah bi al-ḥikmah employed by Prophet Muhammad in nurturing multicultural awareness within society were rational-psychological in nature. The Prophet skillfully engaged in dialogical and interactive communication with his companions (ummah), imparting understanding, awareness, setting good examples (uswatun hasanah), and even extending forgiveness to those who sought his pardon or absolution.
