Abstract

The development of digital technology and the rapid flow of religious information on social media demand the presence of critical, systematic, and contextual religious literacy in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). This article examines the integration of historical-critical methods including source criticism, isnād-cum-matn methods, and textual archaeology as a methodological framework to improve the quality of PAI learning in the modern era. This research uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies. The results show that the application of historical-critical methods in PAI can strengthen religious moderation, prevent digital radicalism, improve hadith and Qur'an literacy skills, and foster students' critical thinking skills. This article recommends the gradual and proportional pedagogical implementation of historical-critical methods in the PAI curriculum.

Abstract

The increasing phenomenon of intolerance and radicalism in Indonesian educational environments demonstrates the urgent need for strengthening religious moderation based on strong theological foundations. This study examines the concept of tolerance in the tafsir Al-Jāmi' li Aḥkām al-Qur'ān by Imam al-Qurṭubī and its relevance to strengthening religious moderation in schools. Tolerance is a fundamental value in plural societies, particularly in the context of Indonesia's diverse education system. The phenomenon of intolerance and radicalism infiltrating the educational sphere demands a strengthened understanding of tolerance based on authoritative Islamic sources. Using library research methodology with a qualitative-descriptive approach, this study analyzes al-Qurṭubī's interpretation of tolerance verses in the Qur'an, specifically QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 256, QS. al-Kāfirūn [109]: 6, QS. al-Mumtaḥanah [60]: 8-9, and QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]: 13. The findings reveal that al-Qurṭubī constructs the concept of tolerance based on five main principles: prohibition of coercion in religion (lā ikrāh), recognition of plurality (i'tirāf bi al-ta'addudiyyah), universal justice (al-'adl al-'āmm), peace and goodness (al-silm wa al-iḥsān), and dialogue with wisdom (al-ḥiwār wa al-ḥikmah). This concept is highly relevant for strengthening religious moderation in schools through curriculum integration, habituation of mutual respect, teacher role modeling, and creation of an inclusive school environment. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions to the development of character education based on religious moderation in Indonesia, while offering an alternative educational approach rooted in classical Islamic intellectual heritage.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the needs, design development, and implementation of conceptual dimensions in teaching the Qur'an and Hadith as a strategy to improve religious literacy for seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Tuban. Using a descriptive and exploratory qualitative approach, data were obtained through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. Findings from this study indicate that the current learning process is still focused on technical aspects, such as tajwid and reading skills, while understanding meaning, interpreting values, contextualizing teachings, and reflecting on activities have not been fully integrated. Additional findings indicate that students find it easier to understand lessons when teachers relate them to direct experiences, while teachers need systematic guidance to design more conceptual and applicable learning steps. Based on the findings, this study produced a concept map for developing dimensions in the Qur'an and Hadith, which includes understanding verses, moral values, contextualization, reflection, and supporting strategies such as reflective approaches, experience discussions, case studies, and the use of visual media. This model has the potential to strengthen religious literacy in a more comprehensive manner and in accordance with the developmental needs of students. This study suggests that further trials be conducted in diverse school contexts to obtain a more complete picture of the effectiveness of the developed model.

Abstract

This article explores the socio-legal approach to Islamic law as an interdisciplinary framework that integrates normative textual analysis with empirical social inquiry. Classical Islamic legal studies have traditionally emphasized scriptural sources and juristic interpretations, often neglecting the socio-cultural contexts in which Islamic legal norms evolve and operate. Through socio-legal studies, Islamic law is understood not only as a divine normative system but also as a dynamic social institution shaped by historical experiences, cultural practices, political structures, and everyday interactions. Key analytical concepts—including legal pluralism, living law, law in books versus law in action, the social construction of law, and the dynamics of legal authority—provide insight into the gap between Islamic legal ideals and their real-life application, particularly within pluralistic societies such as Indonesia. Employing interdisciplinary methods from sociology, anthropology, and legal studies, this article demonstrates the epistemological, substantive, and practical contributions of socio-legal approaches to contemporary Islamic legal scholarship. Ultimately, this study argues that the socio-legal perspective enhances the relevance of Islamic law in addressing contemporary social change while remaining grounded in its normative foundations.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the Islamic educational values embedded in the concept of da'wah bil hikmah wal mau'izhah al-hasanah as explained by Sayyid Qutb in Fi Zhilal al-Qur'an, with a specific focus on QS. An-Nahl:125 and its relevance to differentiated instruction. Using a qualitative-descriptive method with a textual approach, this study examines Qutb's exegetical writings as the primary data source, supported by classical and contemporary Islamic educational literature as secondary sources. The findings indicate that Qutb interprets the three core principles hikmah, mau'izhah al-hasanah, and mujadalah billati hiya ahsan as pedagogical foundations that systematically correspond to dimensions of differentiated instruction. Hikmah serves as the basis for content differentiation, emphasizing material adjustment based on students' readiness and context; mau'izhah al-hasanah represents process differentiation through empathetic communication and varied scaffolding strategies; while mujadalah inspires product differentiation that promotes critical dialogue and higher-order thinking skills. These values generate concrete educational indicators, including adaptive instruction, empathetic communication, moral exemplification, and civilized argumentative dialogue. The study reveals that Qutb's interpretation aligns with major Islamic scholars such as al-Ghazālī, Ibn Khaldūn, and al-Qaradāwī, reinforcing the conceptual-operational relevance of Qur'anic guidance for modern Islamic education. The implications suggest that Islamic educational practices can be strengthened through value-based instructional models that prioritize humanization, justice, empathy, and intellectual refinement, contributing to developing holistic learners capable of navigating contemporary challenges through Qur'anic ethics and pedagogical wisdom.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as an arena for religious social construction through a case study of the practice of bai'at santri (students' pledge of allegiance) at SMA Plus Muallimin 182 Rajapolah. Pesantren, as a traditional Islamic educational institution, not only functions as a place for the transfer of religious knowledge, but also as a space for the formation of the religious and social identity of students. The practice of bai'at, as a ritual of loyalty and spiritual commitment, becomes an important momentum in the process of constructing religious awareness of students that distinguishes it from formal educational institutions in general. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, the study explores the meaning and implications of the bai'at practice on the formation of character and religious orientation of students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ustaz and analysis of Islamic boarding school documents. The theoretical framework used is the social construction theory of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann to understand how religious reality is formed, maintained, and internalized in the context of Islamic boarding schools. The results show that bai'at santri at SMA Plus Muallimin 182 Rajapolah is a systematic institutional mechanism in shaping collective religious awareness. Through the process of externalization, objectification, and internalization, Islamic values, spiritual ties with the ustaz, and commitment to the traditions of the Islamic boarding school are firmly embedded in the students.

Abstract

Interfaith relationships among the younger generation are increasingly seen as a social phenomenon considered normal amidst digital culture, social media, and modern narratives of tolerance. Love is positioned as a personal right that is often considered free from religious boundaries. This study aims to examine the concept of "limited love" in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 221 as the Qur'an's response to the phenomenon of interfaith marriage that is rampant in the Gen Z era. The method in this study uses a qualitative library research approach, primary data sources in the form of the Qur'an and classical and contemporary commentaries, as well as secondary data from journals, books, and legal regulations in Indonesia. The results show that Surah Al-Baqarah verse 221 emphasizes that faith is the main foundation in marriage, while love, physical attraction, and social status are limited by the values ​​of faith. Amid the flow of normalization of interfaith love in the digital space, this verse remains relevant as a guideline in maintaining the balance between freedom of choice of partner and spiritual responsibility in Islam.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of verses on worship in the Qur'an, including prayer, fasting, zakat, hajj, knowledge, marriage, and wills, using a thematic interpretation approach (tafsīr maudhu'ī). This study aims to understand the normative and contextual meaning of verses on worship and their relevance to the formation of spirituality and the social order of Muslims. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach. Library research was chosen because this study focuses on the interpretation of verses on worship in the Qur'an as explained in various scientific works and relevant Islamic literature. The research data sources consist of written data sources in the form of the Qur'an and literature such as journal articles, textbooks, and scientific works that discuss the interpretation of verses on worship. The results of the study indicate that worship in the Qur'an is not only ritual in dimension, but also has moral, social, and humanitarian implications. Prayer fosters spiritual discipline, fasting fosters piety and social empathy, zakat fosters economic justice, the hajj fosters moral awareness and unity among the people, knowledge forms the basis for perfect worship, marriage fosters social peace, and a will ensures post-mortem justice. Thus, the verses of worship form an integral system of worship that unites the vertical and horizontal dimensions of human life.

Abstract

The Hajj and Umrah are acts of worship that hold a fundamental place in Islam, not only as religious rituals but also as a means of spiritual, social, and universal development of humanity. The Qur'an, as the primary source of Islamic teachings, contains several verses governing the implementation, meaning, and purpose of the Hajj and Umrah, scattered throughout various chapters, particularly Surah Al-Baqarah (verses 196–203), Surah Ali Imran (verses 96–97), and Surah Al-Hajj (verses 26–37). This paper aims to analyze the interpretation of the verses on the Hajj and Umrah through a contemporary exegetical perspective, emphasizing their spiritual, social, and universal dimensions in the context of modern life. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method with a library research approach. The results show that contemporary interpretations focus not only on ritual and legal aspects but also emphasize individual spiritual transformation, communal unity, social equality, environmental awareness, and the relevance of the Hajj and Umrah as a medium for civilizational dialogue in the era of globalization. Thus, the Hajj and Umrah are understood as multidimensional acts of worship with transformative significance for both individuals and the global community.
