Abstract

This paper examines Buya Hamka’s Islamic educational thought as that of one of Indonesia’s prominent intellectuals and educators who made significant contributions to the development of integrative Islamic education. This study is grounded in the reality of the national education system, which frequently experiences curriculum changes without being accompanied by adequate reinforcement of spiritual and moral values. The study aims to explore Buya Hamka’s biography, his conception of Islamic education, and the relevance of his ideas to contemporary educational contexts. Employing a library research approach, this study analyzes Buya Hamka’s works alongside other relevant scholarly literature. The findings reveal that Buya Hamka perceives education as a process of holistic development encompassing both physical and spiritual dimensions rooted in human fitrah, with the objective of forming individuals who are faithful, morally upright, and intellectually competent. According to Buya Hamka, education should integrate religious knowledge and general sciences in a balanced manner in order to cultivate individuals who attain well-being in both worldly life and the hereafter. Buya Hamka’s educational thought remains highly relevant in responding to the challenges of modern education, which tends to be secular and materialistic, and may serve as an important reference for the development of holistic and character-based Islamic education.

Abstract

This research wants to describe how teachers play a role in developing a curriculum based on Islamic values at Nurul Islam Ngemplak Boyolali Junior High School. In addition, the research also highlights the efforts made by teachers and the challenges they face in the process. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a field research approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, with curriculum teachers and Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers as the main informants. The results of the study show that teachers have an important role, not only as a compiler of learning plans, but also as planners, implementers, evaluators, as well as curriculum developers. They do not only make lesson plans, but also try to incorporate Islamic values into every teaching and learning activity. In addition, teachers try to adapt the curriculum to the characteristics of students through a contextual approach and habituation of Islamic values in the school environment. The challenges faced include rapid changes in curriculum policies, limited training, and the need to adapt to modern learning concepts such as differentiation and Pancasila student profile projects. Nevertheless, teachers remain committed to improving their competencies through independent learning and collaboration between peers. Thus, the development of an Islamic value-based curriculum at Nurul Islam Junior High School is dynamic and oriented towards the formation of Islamic character that is in line with the school's vision.

Abstract

Worship is a fundamental concept in Islamic teachings, directly related to the purpose of human creation. However, in the practice of Muslims, worship is often understood as a limited formal ritual activity, thus not fully grasping it as a concept encompassing all dimensions of life. Therefore, this article aims to examine the verses of the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) relating to worship to confirm that worship is the primary purpose of human creation. This research uses a qualitative approach with library research, with the primary data sources being the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), supported by relevant Islamic books and scholarly articles. The data were analyzed using thematic descriptive-analytical methods. The results show that worship, from the perspective of the Quran and hadith, is not limited to ritual worship but encompasses all human life activities carried out with sincere intentions and in accordance with the guidance of sharia. Worship is also related to human efforts to fulfill their role as servants of God and prepare for life in this world and the hereafter in accordance with the purpose of their creation.

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of verses on thaharah (purification) in the Qur’an using a thematic interpretation approach (tafsir maudhu’i). The focus of the study is on verses related to purification practices such as ablution (wudhu), ritual bathing (ghusl), dry ablution (tayammum), and the physical and spiritual dimensions of purity, particularly in Qur’an Surah Al-Baqarah verse 222, Al-Ma’idah verse 6, and At-Taubah verse 108. This research aims to understand the normative and contextual meanings of purification verses and their relevance to Muslim life. The method employed is qualitative research with a library research approach, utilizing the Qur’an and classical as well as contemporary Qur’anic commentaries as primary sources. The findings indicate that the concept of thaharah in the Qur’an is not limited to ritual cleanliness but also encompasses spiritual, ethical, and social values that contribute to the formation of individual piety and Islamic social order.

Abstract

Scholars, interpreters, and the public have differing opinions regarding the understanding of bala' and musibah. This is because the word al-bala has various meanings. Some scholars say that bala' is a test. Others argue that bala' is a disaster. Similarly, with the word musibah, some scholars and the public interpret it as a disturbing event, while others say it is a trial bestowed upon His servants. These differences are due to the diverse meanings of the words bala' and musibah. Therefore, this researcher attempts to delve deeper into the words bala' and musibah by comparing two contemporary commentators to facilitate adaptation to our current era. Namely M. Quraish Shihab and Hamka. In this study, at least two things will be discussed. First, the interpretation of M. Quraish Shihab and Hamka about bala' and musibah. Second, the differences and similarities according to M. Quraish Shihab and Hamka about bala' and musibah. The approach of this research is library research, the type of research used is descriptive analysis, which aims to get a complete and clear picture of the problem that the researcher is studying, namely Bala' and Musibah in the Qur'an (Comparative Study of the Interpretation of M. Quraish Shihab and Hamka in al-Tafsir al-Misbah and al-Tafsir Azhar). The results of the study, Quraish Shihab and Hamka believe that this life is a test from AllahDisasters and calamities are considered an integral part of these trials, designed to test and refine human faith, patience, and obedience to Allah. They emphasize trust in Allah and gratitude in the face of disasters and calamities. The difference between the two views lies in their different emphases and explanations. M. Quraish Shihab focuses more on aspects such as trust in Allah and patience as positive responses in facing trials. Meanwhile, Hamka provides a more detailed explanation of how trust in Allah and patience can be demonstrated in the face of trials and tribulations.

Abstract

Worship in Islam plays a crucial role in regulating human relations with Allah SWT while also shaping social life and community ethics. In practice, worship is often understood as a mere ritual activity, thus under-emphasizing the social and humanitarian values it embodies. This article aims to analyze the interpretation of Quranic verses related to charity, the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, and waqf (endowments), in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the meaning and function of worship in Islam. This research uses a qualitative approach with library research methods, using data sources in the Quran, classical and contemporary commentaries, and relevant Islamic literature. The results indicate that charity serves as a means of purifying the soul and strengthening social solidarity, the Hajj and Umrah contribute to the development of piety, self-control, and brotherhood among the people, while waqf is a form of sustainable financial worship oriented towards the public good. Thus, worship in the Quran is not merely ritualistic but also serves as an ethical and spiritual foundation for individual and social life

Abstract

Fasting is an act of worship in Islam that not only has a ritual dimension but also contains social values relevant to community life. However, in practice, fasting is often understood narrowly as an act of abstaining from hunger and thirst, so its social values are not fully realized in everyday life. This article aims to examine the interpretation of the verses on fasting in Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 183–187, and analyze their relevance to contemporary social life. This research uses a qualitative approach with library research through a review of the Quran, commentaries, and relevant literature. The results indicate that fasting, from a Quranic perspective, aims not only to foster individual piety but also social piety, reflected in empathy, solidarity, self-control, and concern for others. These values have strong relevance in addressing the challenges of modern social life, so fasting needs to be understood and implemented more comprehensively as a means of moral and social development.

Abstract

This study examines the management transformation of the Indonesian Ahmadiyya Community (JAI) in response to severe institutional pressures, primarily driven by the 2008 Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB 3 Menteri) and discriminatory local regulations. Employing the P-O-A-C (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling) management framework and organizational adaptation theory, the analysis focuses on JAI's mechanism for survival amidst legal stagnation and social stigma. The findings indicate that JAI achieved resilience through two core strategies: (1) Strengthening centralized internal management and focusing the actuating function on internal tarbiyat (spiritual training) to build members' psychosocial resilience. (2) Strategic external adaptation by shifting from theological dakwah (bil lisan) to humanitarian service (dakwah bil hal) under the Humanity First banner. While the humanitarian program successfully built a positive narrative and legitimacy, this strategy reflects a managerial trade-off: diverting resources from the core theological mission for survival, suggesting a strategic functional secularization. Theoretically, this study affirms that spiritual conviction serves as a crucial intangible asset for mobilizing human resources within a persecuted minority organization..

Abstract

Purification is an essential requirement for performing worship, particularly prayer, which holds a significant place in Islamic teachings. However, understanding of purification is often limited to the technical aspects of Islamic jurisprudence, without a deeper understanding of its meaning and purpose as stipulated in the Qur'an. Therefore, an interpretive study of the purification verses is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the concept of purification. This study aims to analyze the interpretation of the purification verses in the Qur'an, specifically Surah al-Maidah verse 6 and Surah an-Nisa' verse 43, and to uncover the legal content and wisdom contained therein. This study uses a qualitative approach with library research. Data were obtained through a review of the Qur'an, the tafsir books of classical commentators, and relevant supporting literature. The research results show that the verses of thaharah emphasize the obligation to purify oneself before prayer through ablution and ghusl (ritual cleansing), and provide relief in the form of tayammum (purification) under certain conditions. These provisions reflect the balance between the demands of purity and the principle of convenience in Islamic law, while also demonstrating that thaharah serves not only as an outward purification but also as a spiritual preparation for performing worship.
