Abstract

This article describes the United States' national interests behind the Colombia 2016 Drugs and Peace Agreement. I assume, the peace agreement between the left-wing guerrilla group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucinarias De Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian Government which is fighting over territory of influence in the narcotics and drug abuse industry in Colombia, is very thick with the interests of the United States in the War on Drugs agenda. For this reason, the author uses qualitative research methods with library research data collection techniques, by focusing research on influential actors. By using two of the four indicators of national interest according to Nuechterlein, namely economic interests and defense interests, the author finds an illustration that to pursue economic interests, the United States opens the tap of bilateral relations with Colombia through export and import activities as well as investment. Meanwhile, in the interests of defense, the United States provides military assistance in helping Colombia to monitor and overcome the problem of coca cultivation and also conducts special training to the Colombian military.

Abstract

Indigenous peoples have come to international attention marked by the approval of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in September 2007. The declaration was supported by 144 countries, including Indonesia. In Indonesia, UNDRIP is needed as one of the policy bases in the regulation of indigenous peoples.  In its implementation, non-governmental organizations in the form of Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) were also given the opportunity to play a role, and one of these NGOs was the Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN). Thus, this paper analyses the role of AMAN in implementing UNDRIP. For this purpose, this paper uses the theory of non-governmental organization by David Lewis. The research method used qualitative method is descriptive with data collection techniques based on interview and analysis from journals, books, internet sites, newspapers and official documents. The result of this paper shows that the role of AMAN is included in 3 categories of NGO roles based on the theory proposed by David Lewis, namely Implementer, Catalyst and Partners.

Abstract

Indonesia is a developing country that has the characteristics and potential of development resources that rely heavily on the agricultural sector. Indonesia is the third largest source of agricultural products for New Zealand. New Zealand invites North Toraja to cooperate in agriculture and plantations which is realized through the Sister City collaboration. The existence of sister city cooperation that is woven gives little space and hope for the people of North Toraja, especially in the realization of agricultural development goals in North Toraja. The research uses qualitative methods. Related to this research, the author uses primary data collection techniques, namely interviews and secondary data, namely literature, journals and related documents. The results showed that the sister city cooperation agreement did not run optimally, the contents of the agreement were not fully actualized and the stages were not complete. This was caused by factors, namely not being followed-up properly, the budget was limited, Human Resources were not/not ready and the parties who bridged the two partners did not carry out their duties properly. Abstract

This research will write down the impact of implementing the Renewable Energy Directive II policy issued by the European Union to regulate the use of renewable energy as a form of the European Union's commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the Renewable Energy Directive II Policy issued by the European Union, it is stated that palm oil causes deforestation or environmental damage. Indonesia, which has long established economic cooperation with the European Union, especially in the export-import of palm oil, as the world's largest producer of palm oil, feels discriminated against the policy issued. Indonesia gets the country's largest foreign exchange from exports of palm oil and its derivatives which will then have a major impact on the decline in imports of palm oil by the European Union after the issuance of this policy. This research question is "What is the impact of the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive II policy on relations between Indonesia and the European Union?" to answer the questions in this study, researchers used the concept of International Political Economy by Robert Gilpin in explaining the results of this study. This study uses qualitative research methods using secondary data sources. The results of this study will answer the forms of tense relations between Indonesia and the European Union and what factors influence these tensions to occur. This research will also explain the beginning of the cooperation between Indonesia and the European Union and how the relationship was before and after the Renewable Energy Directive II policy was made.

Abstract

This paper explores the long history of gender orders construction in Indonesia. How gender order and the influence of religious taught affect women political participation in Southeast Asia will be explored. In this case, the author focuses on Indonesian women and the influence of Islam as the majority religion in Indonesia. This paper argues that women political participation in Indonesia, although it seems limited by cultural and the so-called Islamic values, actually has experienced significant growth, especially after the Reformation. The gender relations that formed under the New Order that enshrined women as secondary to men which also emphasised by Islam teachings about men prerogative may seem to hinder women participation in public. However, this paper found that there were some contradictions of positioning women role under the state gender order, which has led to some positive effects on women. This contributed to the rise of women participation in Indonesia politics, especially after the reformation era.

Abstract

The year of 2019 was hard on Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), they lost their main territories and suffer from collapsing until finally lost their leader, al-Baghdadi, by US attack late October 2019. The situation led to the escape of thousands of their ex-members that currently stranded in several different refugee camps in Syria, among the thousands several hundred are Indonesian citizens. On February 11th 2020, the Indonesian government decided to not taking back all 689 Indonesian citizens that previously involved in the mentioned terrorist organization. This decision was taken under the pretext of preventing radical ideas to develop in Indonesia’s soil and ensuring the safety of Indonesian people from the threats of terrorism. Within this paper, we would like to challenge Indonesia’s decision by assessing the situation through the concept of international law and international security. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 1961 Convention on Reduction of Statelessness, every country should prevent its citizens from being stateless, thus Indonesia is in no position to reject its citizens and must assist them to get back to their country. Using the notion of international security, it is theoretically more beneficial for Indonesia to take their citizens back, rejection may lead to more dangerous retaliation by the abandoned citizens and could possibly cause bigger harm in their current state. This paper will try to offer alternative viewpoints to the current Indonesia’s policy.
