Abstract

The movie 500 Days of Summer represents the complexity of interpersonal communication in romantic relationships through a multidimensional and realistic approach. This study analyzes the communication dynamics between the main characters, Tom Hansen and Summer Finn, by focusing on the misalignment of verbal and nonverbal messages that trigger ambiguity and miscommunication. In addition, this study explores the implications of the emotional dynamics in the relationship for tourist behavior, especially the phenomenon of emotional tourism as a form of escape and recovery after a breakup. This study also examines the utilization of emotional experience-based tourism as a destination marketing strategy to meet the needs of tourists in emotional transition. The results of the analysis confirm the importance of integrating an understanding of interpersonal communication and emotional dynamics in the development of tourism oriented towards affective and reflective experiences. The findings provide an academic contribution to the study of interpersonal communication and its implications in the tourism industry, particularly in designing destinations that are responsive to the psychological needs of visitors.

Abstract

This research explores the role of the film Dilan 1990 in shaping the tourism imagination of Bandung through the interaction of its main characters and the representation of urban space within the narrative. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with semiotic analysis and cultural representation theory, the research examines how visual and narrative elements in the film influence audience perceptions of Bandung as a cultural and nostalgic tourist destination. The findings reveal that Dilan 1990 successfully reconstructs collective memory of 1990s Bandung through cultural symbols, youth communication styles, and the depiction of urban spaces such as schools, streets, and city landmarks like Gedung Merdeka and Jalan Asia Afrika. The interpersonal communication between Dilan and Milea enhances the emotional depth and appeal of these urban settings, embedding them within a romantic narrative that resonates with viewers. This representation fosters an emotional connection between the audience and the locations portrayed, contributing to the emergence of film-induced tourism. The study concludes that film can serve as an effective medium for promoting cultural tourism, while also emphasizing the importance of interpersonal communication in enhancing tourism appeal through emotional and symbolic engagement.

Abstract

Cultural diversity demands communication skills that extend beyond verbal communication and encompass an understanding of cross-cultural values, emotions, and identities. This article examines cultural communication in a pluralistic society through a psychological approach, focusing on perception, stereotypes, empathy, and cognitive openness. Cultural perception shapes how individuals interpret social reality, but often results in stereotypes that simplify the characteristics of a group, which can hinder healthy communication. On the other hand, empathy—both affective and cognitive—plays a crucial role in building emotional understanding and perspectives toward people from different cultural backgrounds. Cognitive openness strengthens the ability to accept differences, avoid quick judgments, and increase awareness of social complexity. This combination of empathy and openness is the primary foundation for building effective and inclusive intercultural communication competencies. This article emphasizes that these competencies can be developed through education, cross-cultural experiences, and psychosocial training. In the era of globalization and digitalization, cross-cultural understanding is crucial for creating a harmonious environment in educational settings, organizations, and communities. Therefore, building empathetic, open, and stereotype-free communication is key to successful interactions in a multicultural society.
