Abstract

Regional dialects represent an important component of Indonesia’s linguistic diversity, yet many are experiencing reduced use among younger generations in educational contexts. This study aimed to analyze the phonological and lexical variations of the Serawai dialect as spoken by students of the Indonesian Language Education Program at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu, with a focus on identifying distinctive features and levels of dialect awareness. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through interviews, elicitation techniques, and repeated text readings with 30 student participants, and analyzed by classifying phonological shifts and lexical differences supported by triangulation for validity. The results revealed salient phonological distinctions, particularly in vowel endings (Au, O, E), assimilation patterns, and intonation, alongside lexical variation across regions, with some vocabulary items remaining uniquely emblematic of Serawai identity. While most participants recognized the value of maintaining their dialect, some showed limited awareness of specific differences, suggesting that language contact with standard Indonesian influences dialect sensitivity. These findings indicate that the Serawai dialect remains resilient as a cultural marker, though its vitality depends on intergenerational transmission and formal recognition within education. The implication of this study is that dialectological research not only enriches linguistic scholarship but also provides a foundation for language preservation strategies and curricular integration that can strengthen local identity in the era of globalization.

Abstract

Political debates serve as critical arenas for candidates to demonstrate credibility, convey policy agendas, and persuade audiences through carefully constructed discourse, with speech acts functioning as key pragmatic tools. This study aimed to analyze the use of expressive and commissive speech acts in the 2024 Indonesian presidential debate as broadcast on the YouTube channel TvOne News. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research collected utterances from the debate and analyzed them using pragmatic and speech act frameworks through stages of data reduction, classification, and interpretation, supported by triangulation for validity. The results revealed that expressive speech acts—including thanking, apologizing, criticizing, praising, and insinuating—were strategically employed to manage interpersonal relations and construct ethos, while commissive acts such as promising, offering, vowing, swearing, and expressing intention were used to project commitments and strengthen credibility. The discussion highlights that the candidates frequently combined expressive and commissive acts into composite strategies, thereby enhancing persuasive impact and appealing to both cultural expectations of politeness and digital media dynamics. The implication of this study is that the interplay between expressive and commissive acts in political debates not only enriches the theoretical understanding of political pragmatics but also offers practical insights for strengthening media literacy, enabling voters to critically interpret rhetorical strategies in the evolving digital campaign landscape.

Abstract

Writing official letters is one of the essential competencies in Indonesian language education, yet many students struggle to master its structural and linguistic conventions when taught through traditional methods. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Wordwall as a digital gamified learning medium in improving seventh-grade students’ ability to write official letters at SMP Negeri 13 Bengkulu City. Using a quasi-experimental design with a control and experimental group, data were collected through pretests, posttests, and classroom observations, with the experimental group receiving Wordwall-based instruction and the control group taught using conventional approaches. The results showed that students in the experimental class achieved significantly higher posttest scores than those in the control class, with N-Gain values ranging from medium to high, demonstrating measurable improvement in their writing performance. The findings confirm that Wordwall not only increases student engagement and motivation but also facilitates mastery of formal writing skills through interactive and enjoyable learning experiences. The implication of this research is that integrating gamified digital tools such as Wordwall into language instruction can serve as an effective strategy for enhancing students’ academic literacy, supporting curriculum innovation, and informing future policy on digital learning integration in schools.

Abstract

This study examines the forms and implications of religious politicization in Najib Kilani’s novel Zhillul Aswad, a work set against the backdrop of Ethiopian history and politics. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes the narrative through a sociological lens, drawing on Swingewood’s sociology of literature to explore how religious rhetoric, institutions, and violence intersect in the text. The findings reveal that Kilani portrays religious politicization in multiple forms: manipulation of religious doctrine, the use of religion to justify violence, and the consolidation of political power through religious institutions. These forms are analyzed in relation to their social impacts, including the perpetuation of violence and the erosion of moral values. The study contributes to the literature on religious politicization by systematically categorizing the mechanisms of religious manipulation within the novel and offering a critical examination of how such politicization shapes societal and political dynamics. The implications of this research suggest that literature, as a reflection of social realities, plays a crucial role in critiquing the dangerous intersection of religion and politics, providing a valuable framework for understanding contemporary issues of religious exploitation and political control.

Abstract

Classical Arabic poetry plays an essential role in preserving cultural identity and religious values, with Hassan bin Tsabit recognized as one of the foremost poets of the early Islamic period whose works encapsulate spiritual devotion and socio-historical experience. This study aimed to analyze the poem Al-Fida’ by Hassan bin Tsabit through the lens of Wilhelm Dilthey’s hermeneutics, focusing on the triadic concepts of Erlebnis (lived experience), Ausdruck (expression), and Verstehen (understanding). Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through library research using the critical edition of Hassan’s Diwan alongside supporting secondary sources, and analyzed by systematically classifying figurative language, symbolic expressions, and contextual references. The results show that the poem reflects the poet’s personal piety and collective consciousness, articulated through symbolic imagery and emotive language that merge individual faith with communal identity. The discussion indicates that Dilthey’s hermeneutic framework provides a structured means of interpreting classical Arabic poetry not merely as aesthetic expression but also as cultural testimony embedded in historical and religious contexts. The implication of this study is that hermeneutic analysis enriches literary scholarship by offering both theoretical insights into interpretive methodologies and practical contributions for integrating classical poetry into modern education and cultural studies.

Abstract

Poetry writing is a fundamental component of language learning that fosters creativity, expressive ability, and cultural appreciation, yet many students encounter difficulties in developing ideas, selecting appropriate diction, and structuring their poems coherently. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the acrostic technique in improving poetry writing skills among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 11 Bengkulu Tengah. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research involved 27 students selected purposively, with data collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of student poetry. Data were analyzed through reduction, classification, and interpretation, with triangulation, peer debriefing, and member checking ensuring credibility. The results indicated significant improvement in students’ creativity, diction, and structural organization after the application of the acrostic technique, as reflected in richer vocabulary use, clearer thematic expression, and more coherent poetic forms. The discussion highlights that the acrostic method provides a structured yet flexible framework that stimulates student engagement and encourages originality, aligning well with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum. The implication of this study is that the acrostic technique can serve as an innovative and practical pedagogical strategy to enhance poetry writing skills in secondary education, while also contributing to curriculum innovation and the promotion of literary creativity in language learning.

Abstract

The use of regional languages in academic settings remains a complex sociolinguistic issue, as it can both foster cultural identity and influence the quality of student interaction in higher education. This study aimed to examine the effect of regional language use on classroom interaction among first-semester students in the Indonesian Language Education Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control groups, data were collected from 51 students through a validated questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 25, including normality, homogeneity, and paired-sample t-tests. The results indicated that the experimental group exposed to regional language integration in classroom discourse demonstrated significantly higher levels of interaction, confidence, and engagement compared to the control group using only standard Indonesian. These findings highlight that regional language use, when strategically integrated, enhances students’ participation and strengthens sociocultural bonds without undermining academic objectives. The implication of this research is that incorporating regional languages into higher education practices can serve as a valuable pedagogical strategy to enrich classroom interaction, promote multilingual competence, and support language policy development in multicultural academic contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the personality development of the protagonists in Tenderlova’s Meant 2 Be by applying Allport’s trait theory, which classifies personality into traits, attitudes, and intentions. The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive design with a library research approach, in which textual evidence from the novel was systematically analyzed and triangulated with relevant scholarly sources to ensure interpretive validity. The findings reveal that Lestari is initially characterized by insecurity, introversion, and sarcasm, yet also demonstrates kindness and empathy, while Adinata displays perseverance, humor, creativity, and affection but struggles with impulsivity. As the narrative progresses, both characters undergo significant transformation: Lestari becomes more open and emotionally resilient, whereas Adinata evolves into a more stable and caring figure. These results affirm Allport’s proposition that personality is a dynamic construct shaped by the interaction between individual dispositions and social environments. The discussion highlights how this novel contributes to broader understandings of identity formation in contemporary Indonesian youth literature and demonstrates the analytical value of applying trait-based psychology to popular fiction. The novelty of this study lies in extending Allport’s framework to a modern Indonesian novel rarely explored in prior research, thereby bridging literary psychology and cultural studies. The implications suggest that such an approach can enrich literary pedagogy by fostering empathy, critical engagement, and psychological awareness in the study of fiction, while also informing future comparative analyses across diverse literary works.

Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of language use and attitudes toward bilingual practices in two contrasting institutional contexts in Indonesia: a public junior high school (SMPN 04 Gunungputri) and an Islamic boarding school (Pesantren Rumah Al-Qur’an Daarut Tarbiyah). Guided by sociolinguistic theories of language shift and maintenance, the research explores how national and local languages interact within educational and domestic domains. Employing a mixed-method design with survey questionnaires and descriptive statistical analysis, data were collected from students in both institutions to examine intergenerational transmission, language practices at school and home, and attitudes toward bilingualism. The results indicate that while Bahasa Indonesia overwhelmingly dominates in formal educational settings, local languages remain vital in home and community domains, with maternal figures playing a central role in intergenerational transmission. Students across both institutions expressed strongly positive attitudes toward bilingual practices, high confidence in using both languages, and firm resistance to eliminating local languages. Notably, pesantren students demonstrated stronger endorsement of the benefits of bilingualism compared to their counterparts in public schools, suggesting that religious schooling may reinforce rather than diminish multilingual repertoires. These findings highlight the complex interplay between institutional environments, national policies, and cultural identity in shaping linguistic behavior. The study implies that policies to sustain linguistic diversity should move beyond family and community spheres by incorporating local languages into school curricula and extracurricular activities, thereby strengthening both cultural heritage and national cohesion

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Senandung Bisu in reflecting the socio-political realities of post-New Order Indonesia, employing Dilthey's hermeneutic triad as a framework to interpret the text. The research utilizes qualitative methods to explore the poem's themes, focusing on its moral, social, and political implications within Indonesian cultural discourse. By analyzing Senandung Bisu as both a literary work and a socio-political commentary, the study examines how language and poetic form interact to shape collective memory and identity in Indonesia. Findings suggest that the poem functions as a powerful tool for critiquing societal issues while simultaneously offering a platform for political engagement and resistance. This study contributes to literary hermeneutics by demonstrating the applicability of hermeneutic analysis to Arabic poetry, bridging the gap between philology, history, and cultural studies. The implications of this research extend to the teaching of Arabic literature, suggesting that the integration of hermeneutic frameworks can foster deeper engagement with literary texts and their cultural significance in educational settings. Future studies should expand this analysis to other literary works from the same era, using comparative methods to enrich the understanding of Indonesian literary heritage.
