Abstract

This study aims to describe the position of subject-object participants in women’s news coverage on iNews.com using Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis feminist stylistic model. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The data sources are five iNews.com news texts published in the period June–October 2025. The research data are in the form of words, phrases/sentences, and paragraphs containing gender bias. The data collection technique is carried out through reading and note-taking techniques. At this stage, it is done by carefully reading the news from the iNews.com portal for the period June–October 2025 that presents women as the main subject or object and contains issues of gender and gender-based violence. After reading, the process of recording the data obtained is required. Data analysis is carried out through the stages of data reduction, coding, analysis, presentation, and drawing conclusions based on Sara Mills’ analysis categories, namely the position of subject-object participants. The data validity technique uses a credibility test through extended observation, increased persistence, and discussions with linguistic researchers. The research results show that reporting about women on iNews.com contains gender bias, characterized by the dominance of women as passive and stereotypical news objects, the use of subordinating diction, and power relations that marginalize women. This indicates that reporting practices on iNews.com are not fully gender-sensitive and continue to reproduce gender inequality in media discourse.

Abstract

Poem is a literary work rich in symbolic meanings and signs that represent the inner experiences of the poet. One poem that contains profound meaning is Derai-Derai Cemara by Chairil Anwar. This research aims to analyze the meanings of signs contained in the poem through a semiotic approach. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method with text analysis techniques. The data collection tools in this research include the text of the poem Derai-Derai Cemara and an observation guide in the form of a checklist instrument to identify and record the lines of the poem that contain signs, symbols, signifiers, and signifieds. The process of data analysis is carried out systematically through stages of identifying sign elements, classifying based on the concept of signifier and signified, and interpreting the symbolic meaning of each identified sign. Research data consists of the lines of the poem that contain signs, symbols, and meanings representing the poet’s existential experience. The results of the analysis show that the poem Derai-Derai Cemara contains various signs that represent the poet’s awareness of the journey of life, solitude, and reflections on death and human limitations. The symbol of falling cypress leaves is interpreted as a symbol of time that continuously passes and life that moves toward mortality. Through a semiotic approach, this poem demonstrates how linguistic signs are used by the poet to convey philosophical meanings about human life. Therefore, semiotic analysis helps readers understand the deeper meaning of the poem and enriches the interpretation of literary works.

Abstract

Food product advertising in Indonesia operates as a sign system that constructs meaning and ideology in consumers’ minds. This study analyzes denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the advertising poster of Lemonilo Mie Instan Alami Rasa Mie Goreng (Natural Instant Fried Noodles) using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. The poster presents a rich sign system: greenish-yellow noodles unlike conventional instant noodles, fresh ingredient toppings (egg, shrimp, chili, mushrooms, vegetables), four green checkmark-verified claims, and the hashtag #KitaSehatKitaHebat. This product contains a semiotic paradox: an instant noodle claiming naturalness and healthiness. This descriptive qualitative study employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis with data from visual observation, documentation, and literature review, analyzed through three stages: denotation, connotation, and myth. Results indicate: (1) denotative level shows literal representation of greenish-yellow noodles with toppings and product claims; (2) connotative level constructs images of naturalness, freshness, and differentiation through visual and verbal elements; (3) mythological level presents a narrative that consuming Lemonilo is an identity act of healthy and achieving individuals. Theoretically, this research enriches semiotic studies of food advertising in Indonesia. Practically, it encourages consumer semiotic literacy and provides insights for producers regarding meaning construction mechanisms in food advertising.

Abstract

This study discusses the Taur-taur of the Batak Simalungun ethnic group from a pragmatic perspective as part of an oral cultural expression rich in meaning. Taur-taur is a chant-like or humming speech act that serves to convey emotional feelings, such as sadness, longing, and hope, which are greatly influenced by the social context and the situation in which it is presented. This study aims to identify the form of speech and analyze the types, functions, and meanings of speech acts contained in Taur-taur. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and recordings of Taur-taur performances. The data obtained were then transcribed, reduced, and classified based on John Searle's speech act theory. The results of the analysis show that the most dominant types of assertive speech acts include suggesting (1), telling (2), explaining (9), stating (35), and blessing (2). Directive types include inviting (1), requesting (3), ordering (9), begging (1), and asking (2). Expressive speech acts are found in the form of condolences (3) and complaining (6), while commissives only appear in the form of promising (1). The dominance of assertive speech acts indicates that Taur-taur speakers tend to convey information, experiences, and feelings directly and reflectively. This finding confirms that Taur-taur functions not only as an aesthetic expression but also as a medium of cultural communication that represents values, emotions, and social relationships in Simalungun society.

Abstract

The development of social media such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok has influenced the way people communicate, especially in the use of Indonesian. This study aims to analyze the types of language errors that appear on social media, as well as the causes and impacts. The method used is descriptive qualitative, examining various examples of language use on social media. The results indicate that errors include spelling, morphology, syntax, and semantics. These errors are caused by the influence of slang, the speed of communication, a lack of understanding of language rules, and the influence of foreign languages. The impacts include a decline in the use of formal language and the potential for misunderstandings in communication. Increased awareness is needed to use Indonesian according to applicable rules. Furthermore, the way people speak on social platforms is often influenced by habits, convenience, and slang trends widely used by the public, especially the younger generation. This has resulted in a shift from formal to informal language. While the use of casual language can strengthen social relationships, excessive use without regard for rules can affect good and correct language skills, particularly in education. This phenomenon is a crucial issue because language is a national identity and also a primary means of communication in the world of education. If language errors are left unchecked, this can impact the quality of public literacy. Therefore, an in-depth study is needed regarding various types of language errors on social media so that it can become a basis for increasing awareness of the use of good and correct language.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe: 1) agricultural vocabulary mastery; 2) argumentative text writing skills; and 3) the contribution of agricultural vocabulary mastery to argumentative text writing skills. This study used a descriptive-quantitative method through simple regression. The population of this study was 81 students of grade XI of SMA Negeri 1 Pasaman who took the agricultural vocabulary mastery test and the argumentative text writing skills test. The sample size was 68 students based on a statistical formula. To determine the effect of agricultural vocabulary mastery on argumentative text writing skills, a simple regression test procedure was used after conducting homogeneity and normality tests of residuals. The results of the study: 1) the vocabulary mastery of grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Pasaman was in good qualifications with an arithmetic mean of 80.44; 2) the argumentative text writing skills of grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Pasaman were in good qualifications with an arithmetic mean of 77.45; 3) The mastery of agricultural vocabulary of class XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Pasaman contributes significantly to the argumentative text writing skills of class XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Pasaman in the regression equation: Y = 7.443 + 0.513X1. This means that the value of the argumentative text writing skill variable for each sample member is a constant of 7.443 + 0.513 multiplied by the agricultural vocabulary mastery score of each student. Thus, Indonesian language teachers are expected to be able to carry out activities with various strategies and media to improve students' mastery of agricultural vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and functions of expressive speech acts in food battle content on the YouTube channel of Tasyi Athasyia. This research was conducted in a virtual environment, namely the YouTube channel of Tasyi Athasyia. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design aimed at describing the observed phenomenon as it is, without applying any special treatment to the variables under investigation. The research data consisted of verbal utterances containing expressions of feelings, attitudes, and evaluations conveyed by Tasyi Athasyia in food battle content. The research instrument in this study was the researcher as the main instrument (human instrument), supported by a data classification table. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique used the descriptive qualitative analysis model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study showed that 227 expressive utterances were found from six videos analyzed. These utterances were classified into four forms of expressive speech acts, namely direct literal speech acts, direct non-literal speech acts, indirect literal speech acts, and indirect non-literal speech acts. In addition, nine functions of expressive speech acts were identified, namely expressing gratitude, congratulating, apologizing, expressing condolences, welcoming, praising, criticizing, complaining, and greeting. The findings indicate that expressive speech acts are used to convey emotions, evaluations, and to build communicative interaction with audiences in food battle content.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze language variations based on gender in everyday conversation, focusing on speaking style (key) and conversation topics (act sequence) based on Dell Hymes' theory. This research is based on the urgency of understanding differences in communication patterns between genders as part of the dynamics of social interaction in society. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the listening and speaking methods. This approach is used because the research data is in the form of oral speech that contains meaning, is influenced by social context, and shows variations in language use that cannot be expressed in numerical form. The listening method is used to obtain data by listening to the use of language conveyed by the speaker. Meanwhile, the speaking method is used to collect linguistic data through direct communication between researchers and informants in the form of conversations or dialogues. Data collection techniques include listening and speaking, recording, and note-taking. Data analysis is carried out through the techniques of selecting certain elements, linguistic analysis, qualitative analysis, and data interpretation. The results of the study indicate that there are differences in language variations between men and women. Men tend to use assertive, rational, and efficient language, while women are more expressive and collaborative. In the parent group, fathers used practical and solution-oriented language, while mothers were more communicative and expressive. These findings suggest that gender influences speaking style and topic choice in everyday interactions.

Abstract

Learning English remains a challenge for students in Indonesia, especially for deaf students who rely on visual input and often face limitations in conventional teaching methods. However, studies focusing specifically on the use of audiovisual media for deaf learners are still limited. Therefore, audiovisual media are considered an effective strategy to support vocabulary development. This study aims to examine how audiovisual media improve English vocabulary comprehension among deaf students. This research employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and documentation at a Special School (SLB) in Percut Sei Tuan, North Sumatra, involving deaf students who had studied English for one year. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis, and validity was ensured through data triangulation. The findings indicate that audiovisual media significantly improve students’ vocabulary comprehension, learning focus, and engagement, thus supporting inclusive educational practices.

Abstract

Studies on the construction of masculine identity myths rooted in local tradition within Indonesian cultural product advertisements remain searce. This study aims to analyze the construction of masculine identity myths and the representation of local tradition in the 2021 Sarung Wadimor advertisement using Roland Barthes’ three-level semiotic framework denotation, connotation, and myth. A descriptive qualitative method waz employed through textual observation and documentation of six advertisement scenes as units of analysis. The findings reveal three systematically operating myths: (1) a tradition-based masculinity myth that naturalizes the ideal Indonesian man as one deeply rooted in cultural heritage, (2) a religious masculinity myth that positions spiritual piety as a mandatory public component of Muslim masculine identity, and (3) a social nationalist masculinity myth that interpellates Indonesian men to percerve the choice of local products as a declaration of national pride. These three myths form a coherent ideological system through Barthes’ naturalization mechanism, transforming sarung from a mere textile product into an active medium for constructing masculine identity. This research demonstrates that advertisements not only promote products but also shape society’s perceptions of masculine identity, expanding the study of masculinity in Indonesian advertising by incorporating cultural and religious perspectives
