Abstract

Discovery learning is a student-centered learning model that encourages students to discover concepts, principles, or knowledge for themselves through exploration, observation, and active problem-solving. This method shifts the teacher's role from a source of information to a facilitator, aiming to improve in-depth understanding, critical thinking skills, and long-term memory retention. This study aims to see the effect of the discovery learning model on the ability to write observational report texts. This study was conducted at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru in the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. This study used a quantitative descriptive method based on quasi-experiments using one group pretest and posttest design. The population in this study were all 10th grade students who participated in the learning of the ability to write observational report texts using the discovery learning model, totaling 34 students while the sample in this study amounted to 31 students selected using a simple random technique. The instrument in this study was a test to write observational report texts involving the completeness of the text content, text structure, and linguistic rules as indicators in the assessment rubric. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed an increase in students' ability to write observational report texts after the implementation of the discovery learning model. The Asymp. sig. (2-tailed) value was smaller than 0.05 so it can be concluded that the discovery learning model had a significant effect on writing observational report texts for 10th grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru.
Intertextual Dialogue between Nizar Qabbani's Poetry “تَرصيعٌ بِالذَّهَبِ عَلَى سَيْفٍ دِمَشْقِيٍّ” and Zoulfa Katouh's Novel As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow: Hendrawan, Keisha Fitria; Ainusyamsi, Fadlil Yani; Djaliel, Maman Abdul

Abstract

This study aims to examine the intertextual dialogue between Nizar Qabbani's poem Qabbani “تَرصيعٌ بِالذَّهَبِ عَلَى سَيْفٍ دِمَشْقِيٍّ” and Zoulfa Katouh's novel *As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow* in constructing meaningful relationships across genres and generations. This study is based on the theoretical view that literary works never exist in isolation, but rather are always in dialogue with other texts through intertwined symbols, themes, and values. The focus of the research is directed at how the meanings present in Qabbani's poem are reactualized and reconstructed in Katouh's novel through different social and historical contexts, particularly within the contemporary Syrian conflict landscape. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The data sources were obtained from two literary texts, namely a poem by Nizar Qabbani and a novel by Zoulfa Katouh. The analysis was conducted using the concept of intertextuality through intensive reading techniques (close reading) to explore the hypost and hypertextual relationships established between the two works. The results of the study indicate the presence of six main forms of intertextual dialogue, namely: (1) the symbol of the lemon as a metaphor for the continuity of life and hope, (2) the relationship between the ghazal and love for the homeland, (3) the concept of anîn as collective nostalgia that undergoes a transformation into trauma, (4) the representation of the house as a space of identity, (5) muqâwamah as a form of moral and humanitarian resistance. These findings indicate that Katouh's novel does not simply echo Qabbani's poem, but reconstructs its meaning according to the reality of the Syrian war, thus presenting a dynamic dialogue of meaning between two Arabic literary works from different historical contexts.

Abstract

This study examines metaphors in Nadin Amizah's song lyrics from the album "Untuk Dunia, Cinta, dan Kotornya" using a cognitive semantic approach. The focus of the study includes the types of metaphors, their functions, and the meanings constructed through their use in the lyrics. The research questions focus on how metaphors are conceptually constructed, how they function in constructing poetic meaning, and how cognitive meaning patterns represent emotional and relational experiences in the lyrics. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with an interactive model analysis of Miles and Huberman, which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The types of metaphors were identified based on Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory, while the functions of metaphors were analyzed using Newmark's theory. Cognitive semantic meaning was examined through a mapping between the source and target domains to understand the construction of inner experience in metaphorical language. The results showed 67 metaphors, divided into structural, orientational, and ontological (container and personification) metaphors. The metaphorical functions found include referential functions, aesthetic functions, and dual functions. In addition, several cognitive meaning patterns were found, namely emotions as space or container, relationships as journeys, inner wounds as physical damage and burdens, the recovery process as a movement towards stability, and emotions as active agents. These findings confirm that metaphors in song lyrics not only function as aesthetic elements, but also as cognitive mechanisms that shape the way the lyric subject understands and represents inner experiences.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the axiological aspect of school radio as a tool for internalizing courage and language ethics in Indonesian language learning. This study employs interpretative axiological analysis, a case study design, and a descriptive qualitative methodology. Students from SMP Negeri 18 Surabaya who participate in the school radio broadcaster served as the study's subjects. Participatory observation of broadcast activities, teacher and student interviews, and an examination of the school radio program's documentation were all used to gather data for this study. The results of teacher and student interviews, observations, and various documents pertaining to school radio broadcast activities were compared in order to preserve the validity of the data using triangulation techniques and sources. Data reduction, systematic data presentation, and extracting conclusions from field data were the steps in the data analysis process used in this study. The goal of all data gathering and analysis methods was to get a comprehensive understanding of the philosophy of science, particularly the axiological component of learning Indonesian language and literature literacy. The study's findings show that school radio has axiological significance as a useful medium for teaching language and character. Students' direct participation in the design and execution of broadcasts demonstrates their internalization of the value of courage, which boosts their self-assurance and capacity for candid communication. In the meantime, the implementation of language rules during broadcasts, accountability for broadcast content, teacher direction, and the presence of communicative and ongoing reflection can all contribute to the internalization of ethics in language. This study has demonstrated that, in the context of teaching Indonesian, school radio serves as both a technological means of disseminating information and a learning laboratory that can help students develop their character.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the teaching of sociolinguistics to students of the English Language Education Study Program at the State Islamic University of Mataram through a comprehensive library research approach. The study was conducted within the context of higher education and focused on literature published primarily between 2022 and 2025. The population of this study consists of scholarly works related to sociolinguistics and language education, with a sample of 15 selected academic sources including peer-reviewed journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and institutional documents. The research instruments involved documentation techniques through systematic literature review and data extraction from relevant academic publications. The data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach through thematic synthesis, which involved identifying patterns, themes, and conceptual frameworks related to sociolinguistic instruction. The findings indicate that sociolinguistics plays a significant role in English language education by enhancing students’ linguistic awareness, intercultural competence, and critical understanding of language ideology. In addition, effective pedagogical approaches such as contextual learning, project-based learning, and discussion-based learning enable students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life language use. However, several challenges were identified, including limited instructional materials, lack of contextualization in local sociocultural settings, and the need for more interactive teaching strategies. Therefore, sociolinguistics instruction should emphasize contextual and student-centered learning to improve its effectiveness in teacher education programs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms of symbols, their semiotic meanings, and their functions within the martumpol tradition among the Toba Batak community. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed, involving data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using a semiotic perspective to understand the system of signs present in the martumpol procession. The results of the study indicate that the martumpol tradition encompasses various forms of symbols, such as verbal, nonverbal, material, ritual actions, and relational symbols. These symbols are interrelated and form a cohesive system of meaning within the cultural context. In semiotic analysis, the meaning of symbols in martumpol is divided into three levels: denotative, connotative, and ideological. At the denotative level, these symbols are interpreted literally, while at the connotative level, they reflect cultural values such as love, respect, and solidarity. At the ideological level, the symbols depict the norms, values, and social structures of the Batak Toba community, particularly within the dalihan na tolu kinship system. Furthermore, the symbols found in the martumpol tradition play a significant role in social life, including serving as a means to legitimize relationships, strengthen solidarity, build trust, and act as a medium for social control and cultural education. This tradition also demonstrates an adaptive nature in response to changing times without losing its fundamental meaning. Thus, martumpol functions not only as a traditional ritual but also as a tool for preserving the cultural values and identity of the Batak Toba community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of comparative language styles in the Mahallul Qiyam text contained in the book Majmu'atul Maulid Wal Ad'iyah written by Imam Abdurrahman al-Diba'i and the religious values ??contained therein. As an approach, this study uses a stylistic approach with the applied method being a qualitative descriptive method. The main focus of this study includes the types of comparative language styles and also the religious values contained therein. The data sources in this study are verses in the Mahallul Qiyam text that contain elements of comparative language styles. The data collection technique is carried out through the listening and speaking technique with intensive reading of the text, while for data analysis, the distribution method is carried out through the direct element (BUL) technique to identify the tenor, vehicle, and meaning relationship. The results of the study indicate that there are comparative language styles such as tasybih, majaz, and personification. The application of these language styles not only plays a role as an aesthetic element, but also as a tool to convey religious values. Among the most prominent religious values are the values of faith, which relate to belief in the nobility of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the values of morality and worship, which are part of its spiritual implications. Thus, the text of Mahallul Qiyam reflects the blend of linguistic beauty and profound religious meaning within the Islamic literary tradition.

Abstract

Receptive language development is a fundamental aspect of children’s learning and communication processes, yet many seven-year-olds experience speech delay that impacts their academic and social abilities. Although numerous studies have been conducted, the direction and focus of research in this field remain fragmented and lack strong thematic consistency. This study aims to identify trends, main themes, and research gaps in scientific literature related to receptive language acquisition in seven-year-olds with speech delay through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis approach. Data were obtained from the Scopus database using specific keyword combinations following the PRISMA protocol, then analyzed using VOSviewer and NVivo software to generate thematic network visualizations and research gap word clouds. The analysis results indicate that publications fluctuated with a peak in 2021, dominated by contributions from the United States and institutions such as Boston University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Three main thematic clusters were identified, including early language development, diagnosis and intervention, and socio-linguistic context. Research gaps were found in the lack of studies specifically targeting seven-year-olds, limited longitudinal research, and insufficient exploration of technology-based interventions. This study concludes that there is a need for research focus on specific age groups, strengthening longitudinal methodologies, expanding cross-country collaboration, and integrating technology in interventions to improve the effectiveness of receptive language disorder treatment in children.
