Abstract

This study uses a postcolonialism approach, where concepts such as colonialism, postcolonialism, and hybridity are used to identify the problems contained in the poem On the Pulse of Morning by Maya Angelou. The purpose of this study is to understand the background of the creation of the poem On the Pulse of Morning and compare it with social events at that time. The main questions asked in this study are: 1) What social events occurred at that time that were the background to the creation of On the Pulse of Morning, 2) What social impacts emerged after the event, which prompted Maya Angelou to write the poem. This study used descriptive qualitative research with data collection technique researchers used observational method and literature study though literature and historical books, journal, and weblogs. The results of the study show that America has undergone many changes since it was free from European colonialism. Colonialism brought bad habits to the American people. The increasingly open views of the American people made them want changes for the better. This desire was voiced through one of Maya Angelou's literary works of poetry entitled On the Pulse of Morning. The conclusion of this study shows that this poem voices unity and togetherness as well as changes in American citizens against discrimination and injustice felt by black citizens in America. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for further research on postcolonialism with deeper analysis techniques and clearer explanations.

Abstract

Understanding Indonesian poetry from the New Order Period offers important insights on the social, economic and political situation of that period. "Bunga dan Tembok," one of Widji Thukul's well known poems, provides a critical lens of the socioeconomic difficulties that the working class experienced. Although Widji Thukul's poetry has been the subject of multiple studies, it appears that there has not yet a specific examination of his works using a Marxist approach. This study looks at "Bunga dan Tembok" from a Marxist angle in an attempt to close this gap. Using Marxist concepts, the main goal of this study is to reveal the socioeconomic situation interpretations in "Bunga dan Tembok" by Widji Thukul. This study uses Marxist concepts of alienation and the class system shown in the poem to analyze how the poet responded to the reality of the New Order era. The study used a qualitative methodology, with an emphasis on a detailed textual examination. Marx’s concepts acted as theoretical foundations to direct how the poem's content was interpreted. This result highlighted the social inequality between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie during Indonesia's New Order regime. It illustrated how the working class experienced alienation from their land, labor, and humanity due to exploitation and repression by the ruling elite. Despite these challenges, the poem conveyed a sense of class consciousness and the potential for resistance among the marginalized people, suggesting that they could reclaim their humanity and challenge the oppressive system. The symbol of “Bunga” represented this proletariat resistance, emphasizing their ability to rise against the forces that alienated them.

Abstract

This research explores the various forms of violence and oppression endured by enslaved Black women in the Caribbean and the Americas as depicted in Stella Dadzie's A Kick in the Belly. Using a postcolonial feminist approach, this study identifies five forms of violence - physical, psychological, sexual, systemic, and cultural, that were deliberately employed to uphold colonial domination over Black women. These forms of violence were not only tools of control but also mechanisms to sustain both racial and gender hierarchies within the colonial system. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research relies on documentation as its primary instrument for analyzing the historical and literary narratives presented in Dadzie’s work. The study highlights the collective trauma experienced by enslaved Black women and illustrates how violence was systematically used to reinforce their subjugation. Furthermore, this research underscores the resilience and resistance of these women against oppressive structures, shedding light on their agency despite immense adversity. The findings of this research contribute to a broader understanding of the historical roots of racial and gender-based violence. Moreover, it establishes a connection between historical oppression and contemporary social movements advocating for racial justice and women’s rights, reinforcing the continued relevance of addressing systemic inequalities in today’s society.

Abstract

This research analyzes the metaphorical meanings in the lyrics of Coldplay's song "Fix You" using a cognitive semantics approach, specifically the theories of Lakoff and Johnson (2003) for conceptual metaphors and Croft and Cruse (2004) for image schemas. The study aims to uncover the hidden meanings within the lyrics and understand how the songwriter, Chris Martin, conveys messages through figurative language. The methodology involves listening to the song lyrics, noting down relevant phrases, and then performing a descriptive analysis. The findings reveal two types of conceptual metaphors: orientational and ontological. Out of nine analyzed song lyrics, seven were identified as ontological metaphors and two as orientational metaphors. Correspondingly, the image schema analysis identified two space image schemes, one identity image scheme, and six existence image schemes. The research concludes that the lyrics of "Fix You" metaphorically depict someone navigating difficult times and seeking reunion after loss, using physical and abstract concepts to allow for varied interpretations by listeners.

Abstract

Housing names in Sumedang today often mix local and international words. This shows how developers try to connect with different kinds of people and follow modern trends. This research investigates the use of language in the naming of housing areas in Sumedang, a region where cultural heritage and urban development coexist. Employing an ethnolinguistic approach, the research aims to identify the language features present in housing names and examine how these names are used to attract specific buyer groups. The collected names were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, where lexical patterns were identified and interpreted to uncover their cultural, social, and linguistic meanings. The analysis revealed nine language features of housing names: Griya, Bumi, Residence, Grand, Cluster, Regency, Village, location-based names, and unique names. Each category reflects particular cultural meanings, social identities, and marketing strategies. The findings based on the analysis of nine naming features demonstrate that housing names are not merely functional but play a strategic role in shaping perceptions of lifestyle, modernity, and community values.

Abstract

This study analyzes the character Siti in Tere Liye’s novel Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar against the backdrop of corruption among educated individuals, highlighting the societal shift that prioritizes academic intelligence over ethical values. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research examines Siti’s personality through the lens of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, focusing on the dynamics of the id, ego, and superego. The findings reveal that Siti’s character is influenced by impulsive emotional responses (id), rational considerations (ego), and moral values (superego), illustrating her internal conflict between personal ambition and ethical demands. Additionally, the analysis uncovers how Siti’s experiences reflect broader themes of social pressure, the glorification of intelligence, and the importance of integrity in character formation. Data is collected through a close reading of the novel, identifying and classifying instances that exemplify the id, ego, and superego, as well as the moral crisis faced by the character. The research concludes that Siti embodies a complex interplay of emotional drives, rational thought, and ethical considerations, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of the moral implications presented in Tere Liye’s work.

Abstract

This research examines the process of girls' identity transformation through the character of Alice in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland using a literary psychology approach. Alice is described as a girl who experiences various internal and external conflicts during her adventures in the fantasy world of Wonderland. This research uses qualitative content analysis method. The literary psychology approach uses Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory, especially in the stages of industry vs. inferiority and identity vs. role confusion. The changes that Alice experiences emotionally, cognitively and socially are analyzed as a representation of the psychological journey of girls in forming self-identity in the midst of uncertain world. The world of Wonderland is interpreted as a symbol of the subconscious that presents various challenges to Alice's self-stability. The results show that Alice's adventures reflect the self-discovery of a growing girl, learning to know herself and building courage and independence in the midst of the absurdity of reality. This research shows that children's literature can be a reflective medium for the complexity of children's psychological development, especially in the formation of self-identity.

Abstract

Rhetoric, as the art of persuasive speaking, plays a vital role in political communication, particularly in shaping public image and conveying a political vision to the public. This study aims to analyze the rhetorical strategies employed by Anies Baswedan in articulating his vision of sustainable development, both in international forums and local campaign settings. The analysis focuses on the use of three classical rhetorical elements as defined by Aristotle—ethos (credibility), pathos (emotion), and logos (logic)—and examines public responses to these rhetorical strategies. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques through observation and document analysis of Anies Baswedan’s speech videos and transcripts shared on social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Public comments were also collected and analyzed as indicators of societal responses to the speeches. The data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Anies Baswedan's rhetorical strategies are predominantly characterized by the use of logos, marked by rational and logical argumentation in addressing sustainable development issues. Ethos is demonstrated through the emphasis on personal experience and achievements, while pathos is employed to evoke emotional resonance, enthusiasm, and social concern among the audience. Public responses to these rhetorical strategies are diverse, ranging from support and appreciation for his method of vision delivery to criticism regarding perceived inconsistencies between rhetoric and actual track record. These findings indicate that the success of political communication depends not only on the strength of rhetorical expression but also on the degree of public trust in the communicator’s integrity.
