Abstract

Is COVID an obstacle to Indonesia’s trade flows vs. war to boost Indonesia’s exports? Application of the Gravity model using the OLS panel data fixed effect method to address the endogeneity problem for the 2018q1–2022q3 period. The significant positive results of exporters’ and importers’ GDP and the significant negatif results of distance prove the validity of the gravity model. The significant negatif results of the COVID-19 dummy and the significant positive results of the dummy war show that Indonesia’s exports with trading partners during COVID-19 have decreased, while the impact of the war was able to encourage an increase in international trade flows through increased imports to Indonesia. CAFTA will increase trading volume, but the effect will be insignificant. The potential to increase Indonesia’s exports going forward is in line with the end of COVID-19 and still the war.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of GDP per capita and energy consumption on greenhouse gas emissions and test the hypothesis of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in Indonesia. This study uses two methods, namely Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) with bound testing approach. The results showed that GDP per capita had a positive effect on greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy consumption negatively affects greenhouse gas emissions, while non-renewable energy consumption negatively affects total greenhouse gas emissions, but positively influences CO2 emissions. In the long run, the EKC hypothesis applies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Given the mixed results of the existing research on the relationship between transport infrastructure and economic growth in Indonesia, this study, which aims to examine this relationship, uses two approaches, first using time-series data and second using panel data. From the first approach, this study concludes that there is a unidirectional relationship from economic growth to road infrastructure, while between economic growth and air and sea transportation infrastructure there is no relationship. Similar results were also found using the second approach. The growth of three types transport infrastructure does not have a significant effect on economic growth.

Abstract

Climate change causes various negative impacts on life, thus requiring mitigation and adaptation actions. Climate finance could support the transition to a low-carbon economy globally, including in Indonesia. However, empirical research on climate finance in Indonesia is still limited. This study uses path analysis to examine the relationship between climate finance, renewable energy mix, and carbon emissions in Indonesia from 1973 to 2020. The results show that climate finance could not directly reduce carbon emissions or promote renewable energy indirectly. These findings indicate the need to reallocate climate finance to sectors that have the potential to reduce carbon in Indonesia.

Technology has shifted the payment system from cash to cashless method. It turns out that has an impact on the fiscal sector and economic growth. This study aims to examine and analyze the effect of cashless payment systems on economic growth through tax revenue as a variable intervening in 2013-2022. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) is used as an analysis method. The result of this study shows that cashless payment systems proxied by electronic money, debit/ATM cards, and credit cards have an impact on economic growth through tax revenue as an intervening variable, while internet banking does not. Abstract

This study aims to assess the competitive advantage of foreign trade in agri-food products of five Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines between 2003–2022 by dividing the period into the global crisis in 2009, the trade war between China and the United States (US) in 2018, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The study built an econometric model using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) indicators. It was found that the value of the RSCA distribution for the five countries has changed significantly over the years of analysis. Shocks in four countries resulted in significant changes in the competitive advantage of agri-food goods. The RSCA distribution results of Singapore and the Philippines could survive compared to other countries in the event of a global economic shock.
