Abstract

This study aims to: 1) The process of using words, speaking and students' self-confidence in learning English. 2.) To determine the factors that cause students who know the low level of students in learning English speaking skills. 3.) To see how students deal with them. This research was conducted using a qualitative method (case study). This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 3 Ciomas Bogor. This research was conducted from October to completion. With a sample size of 10 students with low proficiency in English subjects. By using two research instruments, namely questionnaires and interviews and strengthened by triangulation. The results show that preparation is the strategy most used by students to reduce their English-speaking skills research.

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to show that there are 1) the influence of mastery of vocabulary and sentence structure together on the ability to write narration of junior high school students in Depok, 2) the influence of vocabulary mastery on the ability to write narration of junior high school students in Depok, 3) the influence of mastery of structure sentence on the ability to write narration of junior high school students in Depok. The study was conducted at Al-Qalam SMPIT and Dharma Pertiwi Middle School in Depok .The selected population was IX grade students with a sample of 60 students using cluster sampling techniques. The results of this thesis study is There is a significant influence of mastery of vocabulary and mastery of sentence structure together on the ability to write narration of junior high school students in Depok. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0.001 <0.05 and Fh = 8.517.Keywords: vocabulary mastery; sentence structure; narrative text; writing skills

Abstract

This research aims at showing the connection between the characters’ reality and fantasy on identity crisis in Alice through the Looking-Glass novel by Lewis Carroll. Thus, the conducted research was analyzed using qualitative method with the approach of psychoanalytical literary criticism: Psychoanalysis by Freud as well as the theory of Psychosocial Development by Erikson to seek the identity crisis of the character Alice. As the conclusion of the research; 1) Alice’s ‘ego’ cannot manage her ‘id’ which is difficult to be gratified in reality that triggers Alice overreact her defense mechanisms; 2) Alice’s fantasy works as a defense mechanism which is caused by her unfulfilled wishes in reality; 3) It is revealed that Alice experiences identity crisis at the phase of autonomy versus doubt and shame as well as initiative versus guilt which influences her behaviors, resulting Childhood Onset schizophrenic (COS) personality disorder.Keywords: identity crisis; psychoanalysis; interpretation of dreams; personality disorder; schizophrenia

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to find out the grammatical error of using Past Tense verbs and adverbs in students' recount text at private Vocational High Schools in West Jakarta. The method used in this study was descriptive analysis using qualitative data. The procedures were carried out by choosing the text from students' writing recount text, analyzing data, interpreting data, and concluding the result of the study. The result shows that 1.) There are common errors produced of using Past Tense Verb in students' recount text. The total error is 632 which the highest frequency of error happens in misformation, which consists of 375 errors or 59.33%, 2.) While the highest frequency of error in adverbs happens in omission, consisting of 21 errors or 24.07%. The findings that the students' grammatical error of using Past Tense Verbs and Adverbs in writing recount text occurred for some reasons. They are affected by the different rules between first language and target language. Moreover, it is because of insufficient students' knowledge about English grammar.Keywords: grammatical error; past tense verb; adverb; writing; recount text

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze and  test the truth of hypotesis about the effects of students personality and intelegency towards English learning motivation. Reseach method that used is survey with regression and correlation analysis, they are  the effect of data show students personality and intelegency with data show English learning motivation.  The data are gotten with instrument that is arranged by writer, that is measures things which are related with variables. The population of this research are the students of XI Level of SMAN at Aceh Baarat Daya Regency, and the number of sample as much as 53 students using simple random sampling. The result of hypotesis test is obtained conclusions are: There are  significant simultaneously effects of students personality and  intelegency towards English learning motivation,  SMAN students of XI level at Aceh Barat Daya Regency. It is proven with sig score = 0,000 < 0,05 and Fcount = 12,736. There is a significat effect of students personality towards English learning motivation,  SMAN students of XI level at Aceh Barat Daya Regency. It is proven with sig score = 0,014 < 0,05 and Tcount =  2.548. There is a significat effect of students intelegency towards English learning motivation,  SMAN students of XI level at Aceh Barat Daya Regency. It is proven with sig score = 0,005 < 0,05 and Tcount =  2.937. Keywords: Students personality, Students intelegency, English learning motivation

Abstract

The readability level of reading text in the English textbook entitled “Pathway to English” used by the eleventh grade students of State Islamic Senior High School in Tangerang. The objective of the research was to know whether the textbook is suitable to the ability of students, to know whether the reading texts are suitable to student and to know the readability level of reading texts in an English textbook entitled “Pathway to English” which is used by the eleven grade students of State Islamic Senior High School in Tangerang. Method of the research was descriptive qualitative method. The data analyzed through document study. The researcher has completed the following steps which she tries to describe, elaborate, and analyze the readability level of the textbook entitled “Pathway to English” a textbook for eleven grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang. From the writer’s analysis, reading texts in English Textbook entitled “Pathway to English” a textbook for eleven grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang which not readable with students for eleven grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang are: from sixteen reading texts, there are six texts that readable with state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang. The reading texts are text 2, 3, 4, 11, 13 and 16. It can be classified Flesch Reading Ease Score 50-59 the description of the style of the text is fairly difficult. There are six   texts from sixteen texts or 37.5 % texts at this level is readable with eleventh grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang. Meanwhile, there are ten texts (62.5 %) from sixteen texts that not readable with state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the effect of teaching media and vocabulary mastery towards students’ speaking skill at Private Senior High Schools in Central Jakarta. The research methodology is experiment. The sample is 60 students which consist of 30 for experiment and 30 for control class. The sampling technique used is random sampling. Data collection is testing vocabulary mastery and speaking skill. Data analysis uses descriptive statistic, normality test, homogeneity test, and two ways ANOVA to test hypothesis testing. The research results conclude 1) There is a significant effect of teaching media towards students’ speaking skill. This is proved by the result of (Sig.) is 0,000 < 0,05 and Fo = 381,979. 2) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery towards students’ speaking skill. This is proved by the result of (Sig.) is 0,000 < 0,05 and Fo = 136,242. 3) There are no significant interactive effects of teaching media and vocabulary mastery towards students’ speaking skill. This is proved by the result of (Sig.) is 0,109 > 0,05 and Fo = 2,653.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penguasaan kosakata dan minat baca terhadap kemampuan memahami teks recount. Hipotesis penelitian yang diuji meliputi: 1) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 2) Pengaruh Minat Baca terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 3) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata dan Minat Baca secara bersama-sama terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode survei dengan jumlah sampel 66 (enampuluh enam) siswa SMP Negeri di Kabupaten Indramayu.. Instrument yang digunakan adalah angket dan hasil tes bahasa Inggris bentuk pilihan ganda dengan pilihan 20 soal penguasaan kosakata dan 20 soal mengenai teks recount. Data diolah dengan menggunakan bantuan SPSS 20 dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis regresi. Berdasarkan hasil pengujian hipotesis, diperoleh kesimpulan: 1) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata berpengaruh langsung terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 2) Penguasaan Minat Baca berpengaruh langsung terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 3) Pengaruh  Penguasaan Kosakata dan Minat Baca secara bersama-sama berpangaruh langsung terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks recount.             Kata kunci: Penguasaan kosakata, minat baca, teks recount.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the compatibility of listening and speaking materials in the textbook “English in Mind” starter level based on the 2013 curriculum that is used in the Indonesian Junior High School for grade VII. This research is designed as a desciptive-evaluative content analysis. The data were collecting by analyzing the content of the textbook particulary listening and speaking parts, consisting of 15 (fifteen) unit including Welcome Unit with 6 sections in each unit. Analysis of the textbook was undertaken on listening and speaking skills, core and basic competencies of the 2013 Curriculum criteria. 1). The result shows that the “English in mind” covers 75% of the criteria of the curriculum listening skill material compatible with the core and basic competence of the 2013 curriculum. The rest 25% of the book content has no compatibility and similarity elements of core and basic competence of the 2013 curriculum. Meanwhile, the textbook “English in Mind”  has fulfilled  100% of the core  and basic competence of the 2013 curriculum for speaking skill material. Key Words: Listening skill, speaking skill, core competencies, basic competencies, The 2013 Curriculum.
