Abstract

Soeara Moehammadijah, (later: Suara Muhammadiyah), has continuously become one of the longest living magazines in Indonesia. To date, the beginning of publication of Soeara Moehammadijah was published on 1915 and has progressively scattered information to the present day. Several dissertations have used this magazine for one of its main references. Several books have also examined how Muhammadiyah developed, either from education or da'wah, from this source. However, what is the actual content of this magazine, not many have studied it. This series presents the contents of the Soeara Moehammadijah column 1915 - 1940. This section presents the continuous sections of the rubric 1930-1933.

Abstract

Studies on Islamic education and Islamic propagation (dakwa) have not addressed the aspect of how particular actors fund their missions in Islamic education and dakwa. Based on a case study at Hidayatullah Islamic boarding school or Pesantren Hidayatullah, this article tries to correlate the issue of public fundraising and the financing of Islamic education and dakwa mission in contemporary Indonesia. Pesantren Hidayatullah conducts public fundraising program by forming a charity organization, namely Baitul Maal Hidayatullah (BMH). The finding reveals that the majority of the fund raised from public is used to finance Hidayatullah's schools and dakwa missions. This finding is in contrast to what have been suggested by other studies stating that charitable fund is supposed to be distributed back to the community based on the need criteria.

Abstract

This is a study of the theological comments of Imam Tirmidzi and those of which he mentioned in his book “al-Jâmi’ al-Kabîr”. These comments provide us a picture of how the early generations of Islam dealt with the issues related to Creed and Aqêda, Furthermore the issue of scarcity of views and comments associated to the early generations of Islam in dealing the issues of Creed and Aqêda is also dealt with in this study. Most of the comments of at-Tirmidzi in the study are mentioned as exact quotations and then they are classified according to the topics they are related to, and after classification analysis of the content along with the methodology and inclination of the holder of the opinion regarding these issues of Aqêda is studied. The study shows that the issue which overwhelmed and kept the early generation of Islam occupied was the issue of amal (Actions) related to those issues of creed or in other words they were more interested in the actions which has to exist as a result of that aqeedah hence those whose thoughts and emotions are attached to these early generations of Islam have to follow them in their pursuit of actions more than any other thing. Moreover regarding the conception of anthropomorphistic attributes the study yields that the more accurate and sound opinion associated to the early generations in this regard in the opinion of Tafwêdhi.e to depute the knowledge of its meaning to God alone and that on extremely rare occasions they use to incline towards their taweel i.e metaphorical interpretation. And this last issue in particular must and should be discussed within scholarly circles only and the general public should refrain from indulging themselves in such technical issues.

Abstract

Manaqib is a familiar term at moslem society in Indonesia, especially at Nahdiyyin circle, and also for Banjarese moslem society (an ethnic in South Kalimantan, Borneo). Moreover, this manaqib is already become a tradition since several decades ago, but its still flare up and lively until now. Consistency of this manaqib tradition is not release from the influence of the charismatic scholars which always spread the call to continue to traditionalize the reading of manaqib, one of which is through their works in the field of this manaqib. Among them is where the classical ulama like Siti Khadijah al-Kubra, Shaikh Samman al-Madani, Shaikh Abdul Qadir al-Jailani and the local ulama are like the Shaikh Arsyad al-Banjari, Tuan Guru Kasyful Anwar, Tuan Guru M. Zaini Gani, and many others. With qualitative-anthropological studies, this study concludes that the writing of the books by the Banjar clerics was influenced by the strength of the tarekat teachings, especially the Naqsabandiyah and Sammaniyah orders. The influence is the emergence of public trust in the sacredness of the reading of the manaqib text itself, which is believed to bring various blessings such as avoiding calamity, expanding fortune, and being aware of various other purposes.

Abstract

This paper is a case study based on the research of the process of arranged marriages in Pesantren. Arranged marriages have basically been a tradition in the world for a long time. In the process, the women involved in arranged marriages are often put in the position of an object and are considered to have no voice. Women have been seen as passive agents that do not contribute anything in the process of arranged marriages, whereas those who have full power in the process of arranged marriages in Pesantren are the Kyai or other male family members. This study took place in the five major Pesantren in East Java. One female informant, the daughter of a Kyai, was taken from each Pesantren so there were five informants. This research was conducted through in-depth interviews using the capital theory by Pierre Bourdieu, power relation by Michel Foucault, and women’s agency by Sherry B. Ortner. This study reveals that Kyai’s daughters and wives, Nyai, are active agents, as well. Using the capital they have, women played their agencies in different ways to achieve certain goals. They engage in critiques on the habitus practice of arranged marriages. They also negotiate and resist when the arranged marriage process runs. This study confirms that doing research focused on women’s voice can expose additional aspects of women’s agency that have been widely ignored.
