Abstract

This study aims to explores Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s interpreted the Jews in his The Holy Qur’an: Text, Translation and Commentary. His interpretation becomes worth to discuss due to his profile as a Moslem officer of Great Britain which politically supported the contemporary Jews in Israel. Additionally, Yusuf Ali was the big fan of the concept of inter-faith dialogue. On the other hand, he was so proud of being a Moslem so that he wrote an English translation and commentary of the Koran in order international society can understand Islam well. This paper is going to show how Yusuf Ali put himself as a Moslem and at the same time, a Britain officer, (and also admirer) who also lived in non-Moslem milieus. The discussion will explore two parts. The first one is the diction used by Yusuf Ali to interpret the Jews verses, while the second is the contemporary contextualization on his interpretation on Jews verses into nowadays life. Using library research method through primary and secondary references combined with a hermeneutical approach, this paper comes to the following conclusion. First, there found five dictions to mention the Jews at the Jews verses, which are Jews, those who followed the Jewish law, those that stand on Judaism, those who follow the spirit of Moses and those who follow the Jewish scripture. Second, by the diverse diction, Yusuf Ali implied that The Jews is all about the spirit and physical action of individual instead of religious institution or affiliation.

Abstract

Islamist movement has been proliferating in line with the historical trajectory of Indonesia's political journey; starting from the colonial regime, in the beginning of independence, New Order regime and today's Era Reformasi. The process of Democratization and modernization lead the ideology of Islamism to a new phase of religious movement. Along with the growth of democracy in Indonesia, Islamist movement precisely shows its existence intensely in public sphere. The opening canals of freedom in the Reformation Era became a new space for ideology of Islamism to evolve and adapt some strategies to survive amidst the onslaught democratization in Indonesia. This article aims at looking to what extent the proliferation of Islamist movements after the collapse of Soeharto's authoritarian regime in Indonesia. In this case, Surakarta becomes important to observe because it's historical context as an embryo in giving birth to earlier Islamist movements, as well as a city famous for the proliferation of ideology of Islamism in Indonesia. Using political sociology approach, this study attempts to understand the path of proliferation of Islamist movements and its various interplayed strategies to the socio-political conditions that occur; either on a global or local scale. This article argues that the development of democracy in Indonesia continues to alter the route map of the Islamist movement. Finally, the results of this study reveal that the proliferation of the current Islamist movement plays a new strategy that appropriated with the development of democracy and technological advancements to gain more public sphere by Indonesian people.

Abstract

This article reconsiders the shubha (misgrounded conceit) proposed by the orientalists. The first shubha is about the revelation of the Qur’an; the second shubha is about the differences of qira’at (recitations or readings) claimed by the orientalists as proof that the Quran is not entirely authentic for the existence of false readings. The third shubha is about the authorship and the relationship of the Qur’an with previous divine books (Tawrat and Bible) showing that the Qur’an is a plagiarism work of The Prophet Muhammad or the notion of influence or borrowings from Judeo-Christian tradition. Employing the theological-historical approach, this article argues that, firstly, that the Qur’an is a Divine Revelation is evident from the linguistic style in which it very often uses direct speech to Muhammad, such as “Say, (O Muhammad to the mankind)”, and from the criticism posed by the Qur’an to Muhammad as the recipient of the revelation. Historically, the process of the writing of the Qur’an has started since the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad and was based on reliable sources, either oral or written, supported by oaths from witnesses from the companions affirming the reliability of the existing records of the Qur’an during that period. Secondly, concerning the variation of the readings, if they are transmitted in mutawatir, they are the accepted readings, because theologically the Qur’an was revealed with differences of readings of sab’at aḥruf, in which there are a lot of ḥikma, and there is no contradiction. Finally, concerning the similarities (either the content or dictions) between the Qur’an and previous divine books, the notion of plagiarism is not relevant; it suggests the consistent and reliable chains of Divine Revelation between the messengers, making they are not in contradiction to the revelation received by the Prophet Muhammad (Q.S. Al-Nisa’[4]: 163-164). From the historical- philological perspective, the similarities of concepts or content between the Qur’an and Bible indicate that the Qur’an is in dialogue with the textual discourses found in its environment. It is reasonable because the Qur’an was not revealed in a vacuum context.

Abstract

This article examines a flourishing Islamic youth movement in Indonesia, #IndonesiaTanpaPacaran or Indonesia without Dating. This movement calls for hijrah (literally means an action of moving to another place) from Western dating habits to ta'aruf or an Islamic practice of getting married without dating among the Muslim millennial. This article aims to explain the emergence of this movement. Drawing approach from social movement theory, the writer argues that this movement is culturally embedded since piety, religious commodification and political resistance against existing political nuance are overshadowed the emergence of this anti-dating movement. It is found out that this movement is an offshoot of banned Islamic organization Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) that continuously struggles to revive the past transnational rule of khalifah (caliphate) in Indonesia. Consequently, the concept of hijrah in social media campaign does not only to promote Islamic lifestyle like ta'aruf but also to promote caliphate as an alternative to secular democracy. This study is presented given the fact that the research on Islamic youth movement in social media is still lack of attention, despite the so-called hijrah movement is legion and may strategically important to make social change through the use of social media.

Abstract

Not only change the landscape of popular culture, but the presence of social media also reshapes the structure and the agency. Nowadays, social media can turn ordinary people to celebrities. Using Instagram and YouTube, Ria Ricis has become a piety celebrity who shows her Islamic identity through Islamic performance by wearing the veil in a casual way and earns money from her uploaded videos in social media. Based on a case study of this figure, this paper raises questions related to Islamic popular culture in Indonesia: How does Indonesian define their public sphere currently amid the growth of social media usage? How does Indonesian Muslim respond to social media as a part of digital technology amidst Islamization in the post of an authoritarian regime? What is the possibility of tension for that young Indonesian Muslim as micro-celebrity while facing the three factors related, Islamic identities, enjoyment, and economic benefits? This paper argues that the new media platform has not only affected Indonesian Muslims' lifestyles, but also the way in which they negotiate Islamic values, secular life, and economic interest.

Abstract

This paper revolves around those verses of Quran in which Quran states the argument of the non-believers provide for the justification of their disbelief and acts of polytheism and that is the argument of Qadar. The argument follows that the non-believers are not to be blamed for their disbelieve because these acts are been decreed by God for them. The paper emphasises upon a detail analysis of their argument and upon the quranic response to them by exposing their flawed argumentation and wrong claim. The paper then studies and establishes the position of belief in qadar and it’s position and place within the Islamic belief system, and furthermore studies those different issues which are discussed and dealt within those Quranic verses related to qadar. Moreover the interpretations of those Quranic verses which states this claim of non- believers according to different Mufassirin are studied and analysed and then in the end a general Quranic view regarding how Quran deals with the issue of “ärgumentation based upon the concept of Qadar” is presented in the paper.

Abstract

This paper emphasized methods used in deradicalization programs such as holistic personality, self-reflection, social skills, crime behaviour, spirituality, consideration, security and psychology.Deradicalization has increasingly been subjected to scientific studies, but a universally accepted definition of the concept is yet to be developed and defined officially. Nevertheless, there are some definitions developed by the researchers to describe deradicalization. De-radicalization can be understood as the process of changing the attitudes and behaviours of former terrorists to reject violence as an ideological, religious or political goal that may cause harm to national security, affect political and economic instability or pose threats to human life. Many countries have taken significant steps to overcome terrrorism through deradicalization programs such as in Saudi (Al-Ha’ir), Yemen (Al-Hitar) and Malaysia(Pemulihan). Most of the program is based on re-education and rehabilitation. Re-education focuses on correcting political and religious misconceptions of the militants, while the strategy of rehabilitation is adopted to provide a thorough monitoring of the militants after their release. The module of De-radicalization was intended to help government rehabilitate detained militants and help to rebuild their personality.
Ibn 'Arabi and The Ambiguous Verses of the Quran: Beyond The Letter and Pure Reason Arif, Syamsuddin

Abstract

This article attempts to clarify this issue and explain Ibn ‘Arabi’s interpretive method, particularly in dealing with the so-called ‘ambiguous verses’ (ayat mutashabihat) of the Holy Quran, on the basis of meticulous reading of several relevant chapters of his kitab al-Futuhat al-Makkiyyah (‘Meccan Illuminations’) and other treatises. The discussion reveals Ibn ‘Arabi’s approach to Quranic interpretation which rests on the assumption that all the possible meanings that the Arabic language allows for any given word or group of words in the Quran are valid, and that rejection of any one of these meanings would imply limiting God’s knowledge and inappropriately saying that God was unaware of the various ways in which His Word could be interpreted. In contrast to the theologians (Mutakallimun) and philosophers (Falasifah), Ibn ‘Arabi rejects rational interpretation (ta’wil ‘aqli) outright. If reason finds the ambiguous verses of the Quran unacceptable, this only proves its own imperfection and failure to comprehend, not the necessity of interpretation. While he insists that one’s reading of the Quran must conform to the Arabic language as spoken by its original recipient, Ibn ‘Arabi more often than not offers surprising and highly original interpretations that seek to unveil the mystical treasures hidden in the text.

Abstract

This study aims to describe Ghazali’s sufism and its influences in Southeast Asia, mainly in Indonesia. Al-Ghazali is a renowned Muslim intellectual who has a special place at every Moslem’s heart, especially in Indonesia. He possesses encyclopedic expertise within various disciplines, ranging from fiqh and ulusulfiqh, al-kalam, logic, philosophy, and sufism. Despite his vast expertise, his practices are more well-known in sufism than in Islamic law, theology, and philosophy due to his long journey, exquisite experience, and groundbreaking thinking within the discipline of Sufism. Ghazali developed a new method of thinking within Islamic epistemology, widely known as Irfani epistemology. One of Ghazali’s biggest achievements is that Ghazali is considered successful in integrating between Sufism and the fiqh (sharia) Ghazali demonstrated his intellectual brilliance of integrating both branches of Islamic thinking (between sharia and the essence of Islam). Ghazali’s notable influence and position within the discipline of sufism made him granted the title of “Hujjat al-Islam”.Ghazali’sSufism spreads and influences the development of Sunni Islam not only in the Arabian peninsula but also in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Abstract

There is no target language can fully represent the source language. This study focuses on the problem of differences, uniqueness and limitations of Sundanese as the target language in accommodating Arabic Quran, using the linguistic approach to translation. I use eleven translations of the Quranic Sundanese asthe main object. This study shows that there is a similar structure of Sundanese language in the midst of variations of the translation of the Quran. I confirm that the translation of the Quran in Sundanese has limitations and barriers, such as thechange of lexical, word types and unit of semantic and structure of sentences. The most complicated is translation in the form of Sundanese metrical verse or dangding. The translationsof the Quran in Sundanese, unlike the Bible translations in Christianity, tend to be fettered by the structure of source language. The Sundanese translators generally difficultto use the structure of target language, because it is bounded by their loyaltiesto the source language. Therefore, there are various compromises were taken by translators to bridge the complexity between both target and source language structures. It is an attempt to show inability of Sundanese language to accommodate Arabic language in the midst of rich and complexity of the language.
