Abstract

This study tries to present the characteristics of  philosophical knowledge of the Qur'an and Prophetic Revelation according to Munji Laswad in his book Islâm wa al-Falâsifa". This book presents the appearance or manifestation of the philosophers' unity (their perspective on Islam) in several theological discourses based on the characteristics of philosophical perspectives. The author finds that philosophers according to Munji Laswad have special characteristics in seeing and understanding Islam and some of the main concepts in it specifically related to their perspective on the Qur'an and Prophetic Revelation. Among these characteristics is a knowledge (depiction of something) that must be connected with the burhan (demonstrative proposition) which is a special feature of the schools of Islamic philosophy. Even this type of burhan is a differentiator between philosophy and others, either theology, Sufism or jurisprudence.

Abstract

This article explains how the construction of the hermeneutical reason of hadith scholars related to the hadith of the prophet that mentions the prohibition of women travels without a mahram. Using the sociological and historical approach, and hermeneutic analysis, the findings point to the conclusion that the hadith exists with a diverse narrative, especially related to the boundary radius of distance and travel time. To understand this hadith, scholars need to analyze further and interpret the hadith based on the context, not merely on its literal text. To conclude their interpretation, the prohibition of women travelling without their mahramsis related to comfort and safety. A mahram can either be replaced or removed when the situation is already safe. In other words, the role of a mahramis considered more on its functional instead of its existential aspect. Despite the use of hermeneutics approach by contemporary scholars to sustain the existing studies, this study still becomes a critique since the offer is not entirely new. Previous scholars have used this hermeneutic approach, and since their understanding is contextually based on their own era, diverse interpretation is inevitable.

Abstract

The dynamics of political communication are becoming increasingly attractive in today's digital era. Marked by the widespread use of social media by politicians, vlog (video blog) has been widely popular among youngsters. Its popularity increases once the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, took part in using the platform. Besides Joko Widodo, the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo also used vlogs as a means of political communication. Using semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes, this research aims at revealing the image that Ganjar Pranowo wants to display through his vlogs. The study concludes how Ganjar wants to be perceived as a religious, popular, and contemporary person through the vlogs he uploaded on his Youtube channel. Religious image needed to be displayed considering that Ganjar is from a nationalist party (PDIP) while political opponents of President Joko Widodo (Ganjar's colleague at PDIP) are building the impression of Joko Widodo as anti-Islam. It was important for Ganjar to show himself as an egalitarian and a populist because he had an interest in the 2018 Central Java governor election.Ganjar utilizes a vlog to display him being up to date. This is important for Ganjar to attract sympathy from the millennials.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the religious patterns of the Jemaat Ahmadiyya in Indonesia, with a focus of the study in the villages of Gondrong, Banten and Manislor, Kuningan, West Java, especially about the views related to religious and state relations, and their existence as a ‘minority group’ in Indonesia. Based on a phenomenological approach, wherein the data is obtained by involving the researcher directly in the social process of the study subject, the results of this study show that the relationship between religion and state is understood by Ahmadiya in the framework of the concept of Khilafah; a concept that is believed to be inevitable, as a form of continuous moral guidance from the prophetic system. But in term of operationalization is not oriented towards political practice and does not clash with state ideology. Khilafah is understood only in the context of religion, spirituality, and other religious rites. As a minority group living in pluralistic community culture, the Ahmadiyya sees that the various cases of violence that have befallen their followers are a form of manifestation of the maturity level of the Indonesian people in responding to differences. So, the diversity that exists is still a trigger for potential conflict.

Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) has recently been in a global spotlight as it is considered to cause a new cluster of Covid-19 cases to occur. According to some news reported by various media, Tablighi Jamaat remained in their ignorance of the pandemic. This may partly result from the way of interpreting religious texts. This article aims to discuss the views of the Temboro Tablighi Jamaat, Magetan, East Java about Covid-19, the factors that shape their understanding, and their religious activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. This article shows that the followers of Tablighi Jamaat in Temboro, Magetan, East Java, view diseases from the point of view of sharia (exoteric path) and haqiqa (mystcal truth). From the point of view of haqiqa, they see the disease as something that naturally comes from Allah. Meanwhile, adopting the point of view of Sharia, they try to replicate the way the Prophet Muhammad when he dealt with illnesses, which is documented in the hadith about the plague (tha’un). This reflects two reception models, namely exegetical reception and functional reception. This understanding then changed the TJ followers’ way of conducting their activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Their implementing health protocols and setting reasonable restrictions on the activities they usually perform in normal conditions. Therefore, this article also denies the statements of media about the ignorance of TJ followers in Temboro as to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This article examines Mehdi Golshani thoughts on the integration of knowledge, which is integration between sacred sciences and secular sciences during the Covid-19 pandemic. The debates that have arisen in the community between religious people and scientists regarding Covid-19 can be resolved if they are put together in a science forum. For this reason, Mehdi Golshani came up with a new idea that was different from the previous Muslim scientific ideas. Mehdi Golshani's solution regarding the debate between religion and science is not deconstruction, reconstruction, or reconciliation. However, to find answers of questions in society about the contributions of religionists and scientists is a method of integration with the Islamic science formula. The conclusion of this article is that science and Islam are an integral part that cannot be separated or even disputed. Science desperately needs divine and religious entities to be filled with a scientific dimension.

Abstract

Pandemics not only have health effects, but also social and economic ones. Zakat plays a significant role in poverty alleviation and in disaster mitigation, including the impacts caused by the current pandemic. Unit Pengumpul Zakat or The Zakat Management Unit at Mosque (UPZ Masjid) is the smallest and closest zakat management to the community. This article tries to discover the opportunities and challenges faced by zakat management in mosques in overcoming the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Management of zakat in mosques with a localization system is in line with fiqh zakat guidelines and the provisions of Law No. 23 of 2011. Using mixed method studies, the research shows that localization of zakat management has a great opportunity in maximizing the role of UPZ in helping people deal with the pandemic-affected communities. The results of this study show that the role of UPZ only occurs during fasting month and besides, the use of zakat mal has not yet been optimized. There are reasons why UPZ does not operate optimally, including the lack of skill training from BAZNAS and the absence of reporting and activity monitoring.

Abstract

This research studies du’a (wirid, zikr and shalawat) that has been practised by Indonesian Muslim to show their response toward Covid-19 outbreak. Using two techniques: survey and interview, this research highlights two model of receptions in living and hadith to understand the practice of du’a. While many consider public ignorance, this research focuses on personal awareness toward the shift of religious gathering (jama’ah) during the quarantine days and their perception of internet- mediated religiosity at the meantime. The result says that the respondents confirm the variability of wirid, zikr, shalawat, such as li khamsatun, shalawat tibbil qulub and doa pagi dan petang. However, their engagement with the internet does not parallel to their authority preference; most of the respondents prefer to grasp ijazah (formally transmission) from the closest family and the surrounded ulama network. A contrasting idea is also seen, as they emphasize face-to face ijazah for their own personal matter, some allow others to take the ijazah digitally.

Abstract

This study discusses the dynamics of social role done by Islamic boarding schools or pesantrenin response to the Covid-19 in Madura. There are two main research questions in this article; how do people respond to the Covid-19 pandemic in Madura? What are the dynamics of Islamic boarding schools in Madura in response to the Covid-19? By using the qualitative research, this study found two major findings; first, the response of pesantrento Covid-19 in Madura is quite diverse. This is due to the religious paradigm of pesantrenin Madura, some of them are conservative, while some others are non-conservative. The conservative-based Islamic boarding schools are more reserved and they tend to counter the existence of Covid-19 by not fully following the directions of the health protocol recommended by the government. While some others, the non-conservative ones, prefer to be open to all policies taken by the government as an effort to prevent and combat Covid-19; second, although the response of Islamic boarding schools in Madura to Covid-19 tends to vary, their attitude is generally responsive when it comes to preventing the spread of the virus. They carry out this responsive attitude in the form of two approaches; structural-medical approach such as the implementation of social-physical distancing, and cultural-religious approach such as issuing religious edicts which contain theological explanations of the necessity to follow health protocols. They also provide procedures in carrying out religious rituals in emergency situations during pandemic.
