Abstract

This study aimed to determine the reading strategies utilized by the teachers in developing oral reading fluency of learners in the First District of Camarines Sur, Bicol, Philippines. Descriptive method was used to describe demographic profile of the respondents, the extent of teaching reading strategies, and the perceived effect of the teaching strategies utilized by the teachers in developing oral reading fluency. The correlational method was utilized to ascertain the relationship between the demographic profile and the extent of teaching reading strategies. 93 English Elementary teachers served as the respondents. Results disclosed that solitary reading, buddy reading, and group reading have a Very Large Extent in developing oral reading fluency. Accuracy, automaticity, and prosody proved to be highly effective in developing oral reading fluency among learners. Moreover, the extent of utilizing solitary reading, buddy reading, and group reading is not significantly correlated in terms of academic rank, years of teaching, and highest educational attainment of the teachers. The lack of significant correlation implies that the implementation of solitary, buddy, and group reading practices is likely more influenced by contextual and pedagogical considerations than by the demographic or educational attributes of the teachers. To further investigate, longitudinal studies or qualitative research might provide deeper insights into how teachers select and implement reading practices in response to evolving educational needs and environments. It may also be beneficial to explore how these reading practices affect student outcomes, as this could offer critical feedback for instructional improvement.

Abstract

Translating song lyrics involves unique challenges, particularly in preserving the nuances of meaning, emotional depth, and music while adapting the text for a new audience. This study aims to determine the kinds of translation methods used in Emma Heester's rendition of Nadin Amizah's song ‘Bertaut’. This research used a descriptive-qualitative approach. The investigator analyzed the data using a variety of translation hypotheses advocated by Peter Newmark. 18 data points are included in Emma Heester's translation of Nadin Amizah's song ‘Bertaut’ per the study's conclusions. Out of the 18 data, four types of translation were used: free translation (6 data), literal translation (5 data), communicative translation (4 data) and semantic translation (3 data). For the most part, the lyrics are translated using free translation. This is because the translation altered the content, added details, and adjusted subtleties in the original language to produce ideal syllables and tone for target language listeners.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the Merdeka Curriculum and its impact on students' speaking skills. Using a qualitative approach, this study involves observation, interviews, and document analysis to collect data from eighth-grade students at SMP Maulana Yusuf. The results indicate that PBL significantly improves students' speaking abilities while promoting essential 21st-century skills like teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving. PBL encourages an interactive and engaging learning environment, motivating students to participate and share their ideas confidently and actively. Challenges such as varying students' speaking proficiency levels highlight the need for adaptive teaching strategies to ensure inclusivity. Educators should address diverse learning needs by employing differentiated instruction and providing additional support to students with lower proficiency levels. This research underscores the significant role of PBL in creating a student-centered learning environment that aligns with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum, which prioritizes independent and active learning. To maximize the benefits of PBL, it is recommended that educators engage in ongoing professional development, design contextually appropriate projects, and foster collaboration with colleagues to refine teaching methods, overcome challenges, and harness PBL's full potential to enhance language skills and support students' comprehensive development.

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in education has generated considerable interest due to their potential to enhance formative assessment, metacognition, and self-regulated learning. However, in resource-constrained settings, cost and infrastructural barriers often hinder widespread AI adoption. This qualitative study examines Indonesian educators’ perceptions of Deepseek AI, a free AI platform offering functionalities similar to more commercially dominant tools. Through semi-structured interviews with 14 teachers and lecturers in South Sulawesi, the study explores how Deepseek AI supports formative assessment, fosters metacognitive skills, and aligns (or misaligns) with local cultural and infrastructural contexts. Thematic analysis revealed that Deepseek AI’s real-time feedback, adaptive pathways, and automated grading significantly reduce teacher workload and enhance student engagement. Participants also noted improvements in learners’ metacognitive reflection, with AI-generated prompts prompting students to examine their problem-solving strategies. Nonetheless, rural educators reported connectivity gaps that delayed feedback and limited the tool’s effectiveness. Concerns over cultural mismatch in AI-generated materials were also prominent, highlighting the need for localized content that resonates with Indonesian norms and values. While ethical considerations such as data privacy were mentioned, most educators stressed the urgency of training and policy support—particularly government-led investments in rural broadband and professional development programs. Overall, the findings underscore both the promise and complexity of integrating AI in low-resource educational settings. Deepseek AI can catalyze more efficient, learner-centered pedagogies if stakeholders address infrastructural inequities, cultivate teacher readiness, and ensure cultural and ethical alignment. These insights inform policymakers, EdTech developers, and educators seeking equitable AI solutions that optimize student learning outcomes. Abstract

This is research on registers used in English advertisements. Register is the term used for a variety of languages determined by subject matter. It is identified by certain phonological variants, vocabulary, or grammar that are associated with different occupational groups or subject matter. The objective of this research is to describe the specific words, the forms, and the functions of the registers. The specific words are the words that are most often used in English advertisements; the forms are the structures of the specific words; the functions are the utilities of the specific words. The advertisements that the researcher takes are: 1. Apartment, house, and hotel 2. Beverage and food 3. Cafe, restaurant, and food 4. Cosmetic 5. Vacancy. This research is descriptive qualitative because it is presented qualitatively. There is neither numeral nor counting data in this research. The sources of data are television, magazines, and newspapers. The researcher used a noting technique in collecting the data. To analyse the data, she used transferring, separating, and changing techniques. The result of the research reveals that every kind of advertisement has its own specific words, which are its registers. These specific words frequently appear in certain advertisements so that people can easily guess what kind of advertisement those weights belong to. These specific words have some forms: one-word form (noun, adjective, verb, adverb, and preposition), phrase forms (noun phrase and adjective phrase), phrasal verb form, and idiom form.

Abstract

In today’s globalized creative industries, English proficiency is not merely a supportive skill but a core component of professional literacy, especially in advertising. However, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction often fails to reflect the communicative realities of design students, leading to a disconnect between language learning and domain-specific needs. This study explores how advertising students at Politeknik Negeri Media Kreatif engage with English when crafting brand messages in visual campaigns. The aim is to identify the linguistic challenges they face and the pedagogical adjustments needed in ESP instruction. Employing a qualitative research design, this study involved 15 advertising students as participants. Data were collected through document analysis of student-produced advertising materials, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Thematic analysis revealed five core findings: (1) English use was shaped more by intuitive creativity than formal instruction; (2) students showed resourcefulness in digital-assisted writing but struggled with genre-specific tone and idiomatic accuracy; (3) multimodal synergy between text and visuals was enhanced by linguistic confidence; (4) collaborative language support was seen as lacking; and (5) students called for more context-specific ESP learning experiences. The study contributes to ESP and design education by proposing a reimagined ESP curriculum that includes task-based, genre-driven, and collaborative approaches tailored to creative disciplines. Findings suggest that integrating language instruction with design practice enhances students' communicative competence and their ability to produce globally resonant advertising content. This research supports a shift from generalized English training toward a more embedded, practice-oriented ESP pedagogy in design education.

Abstract

Drawn upon the usage-based approach which considers inter-individual variation as an inherent feature of language use and production, this study attempted to explore what linguistic complexity measures significantly differed among individual learners of similar learning conditions and how they were compatible with rubric-based scorings. Statistical analyses confirm that variation in complexity ranged from lexical, syntactic to discoursal levels. Comparisons with human ratings reveal that the variation in linguistic complexity measures is complex in nature since complexity correlates with perceived proficiency, particularly when it comes to semantic cohesion and lexical control but in others, complexity varies independently of performance, suggesting that the developmental stage of complexity may moderate its impact on ratings.
