Abstract

The integration of explainer videos in language learning has gained significant attention due to their ability to present complex linguistic concepts in a visually engaging and structured manner. This study examines how students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universitas Terbuka (UT) engage with explainer videos and compares their effectiveness in enhancing language proficiency. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through questionnaires and open-ended responses from students at both institutions. The findings reveal key patterns in student engagement, preferred video formats, and perceived learning benefits, including improvements in vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and speaking confidence. Differences in institutional learning environments and accessibility also influence student experiences with explainer videos. The study further identifies challenges faced by learners, such as attention span limitations and the need for more interactive elements. Insights from this research contribute to the development of more effective video-based instructional strategies for language learning, catering to diverse student needs across different educational contexts.

Abstract

Language interference refers to deviations from the rules of the target language due to the influence of a speaker’s first or second language. This study aims to identify and analyze the forms of English language interference experienced by multilingual students, providing an empirical foundation for developing inclusive and linguistically responsive English language education that accommodates learners’ diverse linguistic backgrounds. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research focuses on students from the English Language Education Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Luwuk, who use multiple languages in their daily lives. Data collection instrument was interview. The findings reveal two primary forms of interference in students’ English communication: phonological and syntactic interference. Phonological interference stems from sound similarities students’ source language and English, while syntactic interference arises from the influence of first and second language syntax on English sentence construction. These findings underscore the importance of understanding learners’ linguistic backgrounds as a basis for fostering more inclusive English language teaching practices in multilingual classrooms.

Abstract

Digital literacy skills help students to make the most of the opportunities and face the challenges that digital technologies and online environments provide. However, some students find the digital literacy skills, particularly writing and receiving emails challenging because of their lack of confidence and experience. This study describes learning activities providing students with the opportunity to engage with the academic community to promote email communication and raise their self-confidence. The participants of this qualitative study were non-English education department students who enrolled in English course in a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. The data were the students’ email collected through the use of university learning management system and their reflection collected through classroom discussion. Learning activities which involve students in real experience of writing and receiving email communication were applied. Interpreted qualitatively, the data show that all participants are able to write an email in English to their self-selected teacher in their academic community and received the response from the teacher. The result indicates that the activities enhance the students’ confidence in writing English email although there are still some mistakes in the technical part of their writing. Real world practice of the digital literacy skills is strongly suggested.

Abstract

The aims of the present study were twofold: Exploring the variabilities of ChatGPT-5.0’s capabilities of rubric-based essay scoring across three prompting designs and two essay feeding methods; and testing the reliability of ChatGPT-generated scores against human ratings. Drawing upon three reliability measurements, including: Spearman’s correlations, Intraclass Correlations (Koraishi, 2024; Bui & Barrot, 2025) and quadratic weighted kappa (QWK) ( Mizumoto & Eguchi, 2023; Poole & Coss, 2024), the findings revealed that although the reliability coefficients ranged from moderate to substantial, the essay scoring abilities of ChatGPT-5.0 depended greatly upon users’ expertise to engineer prompts and their choices of essay feeding. This study highlights the importance of continued effort in the validation of this technology as an automated essay scoring tool and emphasizes the irreplaceability of human professional judgment in this field.
