Abstract

This research aims to describe politeness strategies performed by Piers Morgan and Donald Trump in an interview held on the 25th of January 2018 at the World Economy Forum in Davos, Switzerland. It is used the theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). This research employs a descriptive qualitative method by taking the transcription of the interview. The data analysis reported that the participants of the interview employed positive and negative politeness strategies to save one another’s faces. The result of the research shows that the participants of the interview attempt to decrease and keep the social distance between them through positive and negative politeness strategies. As a journalist, Piers Morgan tries to handle the conversation to run smoothly. He employs more negative politeness strategies than Donald Trump who has higher social status as the President of the USA. In this event, powerless participants need to be more polite than powerful participants.

There are three levels of beauty according to Braginsky, namely; the beauty sphere, the utility sphere, and the functional sphere (refinement). These three levels of spheres are the basis for analysis to answer the three main problems that are formulated in this article. The results of the analysis showed that the elong ugi "Ala Masea-Sea" fulfills two spheres, namely the beauty spheres and the faedah spheres. The functional sphere or the highest sphere in terms of the beauty of a work is not contained in elong ugi "Ala Masea-Sea". Abstract

This study aims to describe colonial discourses that appear in a short story entitled ‘Laila’ by Putu Wijaya. It is utilizing post-colonial theory to analyze about conditions of the colonizer and colonizeddepicted in the short story. In post-colonial theory, colonized society is defined as a society that is controlled by the colonizer, either geographically, socially, or politically. Post-colonial then is used as a way to explain the actions of colonial power that are hidden behind the attitudes and practices which do not seem to show any practice of colonial authority. The results of this study indicated that the hegemonic behaviors of power by Laila's employer are found against Laila. Another discourse that emerged was the subalternate of Laila's character as the colonized whose voice was increasingly silenced. Laila's character attempts to imitate the dominant group by doing mimicry with ambivalence raised in this short story

Abstract

Today, the discourse of feminism pays more attention to correlations between women, motherhood, and society rather than trying to make women equal to men. Julia Kristeva explains maternal passion as motherhood’s characteristic that relates to the biological state of the sacred womb and the sociological aspect of having children. Mbah Benguk in Y. B. Mangunwijaya’s work tells about a grandmother who takes care of her two disabled grandchildren left by their mother. Mangunwijaya does not attack feminism, yet he underlines the crucial role of the mother. The question is; how is maternal passion reflected in Y. B. Mangunwijaya’s Mbah Benguk? Using the qualitative method, cultural concepts are used to explain the relations between Mangunwijaya’s story and Kristeva’s perspectives. Tensions between biological concepts of woman and sociological ideas of the mother are contradicted. Being a mother shows more passion than emotion as seen in children’s language as a reflection of their mother. Motherhood is the sublimation of a woman’s desire for her children. In conclusion, the story of Mangunwijaya is enriched through Kristeva’s perspective, especially in how a woman should be present as the maternal passion of the womb and the caregiver to her children.

Blasphemy cases toward minority have been significantly rising in Indonesia. Religion has already become one of the aspects that urge sustainable conflicts among other pluralistic societies. Each side, the actors and the victims, have struggled to defend their truth without putting their conscience aside humanity or tolerance. This cost is too much comparing to what our nation did to fight for democracy. One of recent blasphemy issues that successfully went viral is a video showing a popular Islamic cleric, Abdul Somad telling a crowd that the Christian crucifix is the dwelling place for a genie. Surely, this video has sparked an angry reaction from Christians. However, this action met some contrary responses from our society. This study aims to analyze how religious sentiments could show its power or authority to affect social control that happened in Indonesia. This study applied Bourdieu’s theory of social capital and power reflecting the strategies of resistance which may happen between pros and cons by combining some perspectives.
