Abstract

This study examines the role of social media in the Rohingya ethnic rejection movement (On social media from November 2023 - January 2024). The study discusses how this social media leads public opinion so that people reject the presence of the Rohingya ethnic group in Aceh. The focus of the problem in this study is how social media as a tool can shape narratives and disseminate information that influences public opinion towards the rejection of the Rohingya ethnic group. This study uses Framing Theory by Erving Goffman which explains how the media constructs and frames an issue. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method. The results obtained from this study are that social media has become a barometer for the public to see and assess the situation that occurs, one of which is the arrival of the Rohingya ethnic group in Aceh. Social media also plays an important role in strengthening narratives and disseminating information that influences public opinion towards the Rohingya. The rejection movement is a form of resistance carried out by the Acehnese people against the presence of the Rohingya ethnic group. Rejection of Rohingya refugees in Aceh is a response from the community who feel threatened by their arrival and consider that local rights and interests must be prioritized.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited comprehensive investigations on political literacy despite the growing body of studies conducted over the past few decades. The research aims to provide an extensive understanding of global trends, conceptual foundations, and thematic structures related to political literacy through a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis. Using the keyword “Political Literacy,” a total of 5,900 publications from 1978 to 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using VOSviewer to visualize collaboration networks, author productivity, and thematic clusters across countries. The findings indicate that political literacy research is geographically diverse, with major contributions from the United Kingdom, China, and the United States, while emerging scholarly attention is evident in Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, and several developing nations. Core themes shaping the academic discourse include media literacy, civic engagement, democratic education, and conceptual development. The study underscores the importance of expanding political literacy research in underrepresented regions to promote global inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding. It further highlights the need to integrate political literacy within educational and civic frameworks to nurture informed, active, responsible, and participatory citizens. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive, evidence-based foundation for advancing sustainable political literacy education and guiding future interdisciplinary research.

Abstract

The buffalo racing tradition or local community Kangean-Madura calling the term of lombe, once regarded as a sacred communal ritual symbolizing solidarity, honor, and agrarian identity, has undergone significant sociocultural transformation in the context of modernization and globalization. This study aims to analyze the sociological dimensions of changing social values in the buffalo racing tradition as it shifts from sacred ritual to profane spectacle. Employing a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving local elders, tradition organizers, and cultural practitioners. The findings indicate that the buffalo racing tradition has increasingly been influenced by economic motives, tourism development, and media exposure, leading to the commodification of cultural values. Nevertheless, the tradition still serves as a medium for maintaining local identity and social cohesion. From a sociological perspective, this transformation illustrates the tension between cultural preservation and adaptation, as local communities negotiate their traditional values within the global cultural order. The study underscores the need for strengthening cultural resilience and critical awareness to ensure the continuity of indigenous traditions amid global change.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of social conflicts that arise due to fierce competition among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), especially in the rapidly growing culinary sector in the digital era. Competition for limited resources, such as market share, raw materials, and access to capital, often triggers tensions and conflicts between business actors. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive approach, data is collected through relevant journals. This analysis is based on  the Theory of Conflict by Karl Marx, which highlights class struggles and power inequality, and Lewis Coser, who sees conflict as a functional process that can strengthen group solidarity. The results of the study show that conflict manifests itself in various forms, ranging from unfair price competition to the spread of negative rumors. Conflict theory helps explain how resource imbalances perpetuate tensions, but also shows that constructive conflict management can encourage innovation and new collaboration among MSME actors.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of illegal mining (PETI) in Batangk Atas District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan Province, as a social phenomenon emerging within conditions of economic and ecological uncertainty. The study aims to analyze the formation and persistence of PETI as a livelihood strategy for local communities, as well as how miners perceive and manage risks to their bodies and the environment. A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed, with data collected through literature review, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and documentation during fieldwork conducted in collaboration with Gaia Indonesia as part of the Socio-Economic Study Project in August 2025. The analysis is grounded in risk society framework to examine the relationship between risk, modernity, and informal economic practices. The findings indicate that PETI cannot be understood merely as an illegal activity, but rather as a historically institutionalized practice that generates enduring structural risks, including occupational accidents, mercury exposure, and environmental degradation, which are addressed by local communities through adaptive strategies to sustain their livelihoods.
