Abstract

The social media platform X (Twitter) has evolved into a virtual public space extensively utilized by its users to discuss various issues, including religion. This phenomenon presents an intriguing subject for investigation, particularly concerning the resurgence of traditional religious authority into the virtual public sphere and the influential capacity of social media algorithms to direct and shape users' religious perspectives. This research examines the shift in religious authority within the virtual public space of social media platform X (Twitter). Qualitative research methods will be employed in this inquiry. The study utilizes data crawling techniques facilitated by an application built using the Python programming language to define the research scope. The study yields several noteworthy findings. Firstly, the emergence of traditional religious authority appears to facilitate the proliferation of more open and substantive religious discussions within the virtual public space. Secondly, the emergence of two novel types of authority within the virtual public space, namely anonymous human authority and impersonal non-human authority. Anonymous human authority derives its legitimacy from social media reputation, while impersonal non-human authority manifests in the form of social media algorithms capable of influencing and shaping religious perspectives through the mechanism of creating algorithmic circles.

Abstract

This article analyzes human economic behavior as social beings through two seemingly opposing perspectives: the utilitarian perspective and the embeddedness perspective. The utilitarian perspective posits that economic actions are carried out rationally based on economic principles, falling into the realm of rationality in philosophical studies. Conversely, the embeddedness perspective argues that economic actions are always tied to social contexts such as norms, habits, rules, traditions, and religion, making it impossible for economic actions to be detached from the realm of religiosity. Since humans live in a religious environment, economic actions must adhere to religious values. This article focuses on economic actions as texts or social realities and how the realms of rationality and religiosity can find common ground. Using a literature review method and a philosophical approach, this article collects data through library research techniques and analyzes it using qualitative descriptive analysis and comparative analysis techniques. In the realm of rationality, human economic actions are inseparable from the nature of intellect, where economic actors act according to the logic of their interests. Economic behavior is considered rational if it aligns with the desired logical standards. On the other hand, in the realm of religiosity, humans as moral beings are influenced by their religious character, which impacts their economic actions. This article emphasizes that the analysis of economic actions exists simultaneously in the realms of rationality and religiosity, without being treated as a dichotomy. Economic activities require rationality to maximize efforts but also need strong moral values as an instrument.

Abstract

The digital era allows sexual activities to be carried out online. This article aims to look at cybersex culture and how the reality of that culture is formed. Data about cybersex was extracted from previous research and sites on the internet that describe the reality of cybersex. This data was then analyzed using content analysis. The theories used are Peter L. Berger's dialectical theory of externalization, objectivation and internalization and the uses and gratification theory. This research found that the formation of sexual culture in the digital era comes from externalization, both by consumers and producers of cybersex. Externalization by producers takes the form of providing pornographic sites, pornographic videos and images, and long-distance sex equipment. The continued interest in cybersex makes manufacturers continue to produce sex services and develop online sex equipment. Cybersex becomes a compelling objective reality that must be internalized in cybersociety’s subjective consciousness and influence the next externalization stage. Cybersex has become a medium for channelling sexual needs because it is considered safe from various social risks, cheap and practical.

Abstract

The formation of Islamic society in Indonesia is both dynamic and polycentric. Experts from various fields have assigned diverse labels, such as political Islam, cultural Islam, traditionalist Islam, modernist Islam, spiritual Islam (Islam Kebtinan), puritanical Islam, and so forth. However, these typologies are inseparable from two key influences: globally inspired views of Islam on the one hand and locally rooted views of Islam on the other. This article examines the phenomenology of Islamic society in Indonesia, with a particular focus on traditionalist Muslims, Islam kejawen, and puritanical Islam. Using a literature review of the religious symbols of researched Islamic society and employing phenomenological tools, the findings illustrate unique typologies of the Muslim people of Nusantara. Traditional Islamic society integrates religion and both sacred and profane aspects into an attitude of respect for the great intellectual and spiritual traditions of Islam. This respect is manifested through behavioral symbols such as the traditions of maintaining a sanad and adhering to a madzhab in addressing religious and socio-cultural matters. These practices are rooted in ideational symbols, such as the concept of the ukhuwah—basyariyah, wathaniyah, and diniyah— expressed through religious material symbols. In contrast, the phenomenological awareness of puritanical Islamic society emphasizes the sacred and profane by focusing on the authenticity and exotericism of Islam. Meanwhile, Javanese Islam perceives religion as an intersubjective awareness connecting God, nature, and the human self.

Abstract

This research employs critical discourse analysis of media to examine the news coverage of the Papua student riot in Surabaya.  This study analyzes how media texts and narratives apply news coverage of the incident in the Papuan Student riots in Surabaya. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis as its analytical framework. Data collection methods include observation and documentation. The findings of this study indicate that the media's amplification of the Papua student riots in Surabaya reflects historical factors, situational konteks, and the hegemony of media institutions, leading to interpretative insinuation in news narratives that tend toward media-driven judgment. This tendency is reflected in headlines such as "Refusing to Hoist the Red and White Flag" and "Discovery of a Bag with the Morning Star Emblem," which historically connected to the issue of the Papuan independence movement community. The media's tendency toward insinuative or provocative reporting has exacerbated anarchic conflicts in several regions, including Manokwari, Jayapura, Fakfak, and Sorong.
