Abstract

Urban expansion has led to a significant decline in agricultural land and green open spaces. Urban farming emerges as an alternative approach by optimizing and managing limited open areas among urban structures. Urban farming initiatives conducted by the Flamboyan Dasawisma Group in Padaleu Village, Kambu District, Kendari City, provide green vegetables as a nutritional source, enhance environmental quality, and support efforts to mitigate the impacts of global warming. This Community Service Program (PKM) aims to improve community knowledge and skills while increasing awareness of the importance of utilizing household yard spaces to achieve family food security and environmental sustainability through urban farming practices. The program was implemented through educational outreach to community groups about the benefits and application of urban farming, followed by hands-on mentoring in establishing an urban farming garden as a demonstration model for the Padaleu Village community. The findings reveal a positive response from members of the Flamboyan Dasawisma Group, along with strong expectations for the program's continued support. This community service initiative is anticipated to provide tangible benefits to the local community, particularly the Flamboyan Dasawisma Group, by reducing household expenditures. Furthermore, community members demonstrated high enthusiasm for cultivating vegetables using the urban farming system.

Abstract

Waste is one of the main issues in environmental pollution. Therefore, ineffective and inefficient waste management can potentially damage the environment, such as waste decomposition, which causes health risks. Universitas Sulawesi Barat as the locus of ongoing activities, experiences various problems in its waste management. The large amount of waste scattered on campus is due to the lack of awareness of stakeholders, including students and canteen managers, as the largest contributors to waste. The absence of garbage pickup trucks on campus has made waste management ineffective, and waste is often burned on campus, which can have serious health impacts if the smoke is inhaled. Therefore, various stages of program activities were carried out from July to September 2025, starting with program socialization to stakeholders, namely PT. Kencana Hijau Bina Lingkungan (KHBL) Polewali Mandar, conducting socialization with the theme "Zero Waste: Green and Clean Campus" at Universitas Sulawesi Barat by presenting students, canteen managers, and staff of the State-Owned Agency (BMN) Unsulbar as those responsible for campus waste management. In addition to presenting an audience of students, canteen managers, and BMN, it also presented speakers from PT. KHBL Polewali Mandar, the Department of Environment and Sanitation (DLHK) of Majene Regency, as well as speakers from Unsulbar lecturers regarding the role and function of BMN in waste management, the role and function of students in waste management, and the role and function of canteen managers in campus waste management.

Abstract

The issue of environmental degradation and the reduction of green open spaces in urban areas poses a significant challenge to ecosystem sustainability and community food security. One of the main causes of this is land-use change, including in mosque areas. Generally, mosque land is covered with concrete or paving to be used as parking lots, thus losing its ecological function. This condition encourages the need for an environmentally-based empowerment approach rooted in religious values. Therefore, the community service activity carried out was the Implementation of Mosque-Based Ecotheology Through the 10,000 Trees Movement as a form of ecotheology application to the community in South Sulawesi Province. The goal of this activity was to integrate Islamic teachings on nature conservation with sustainable agricultural practices by planting productive fruit trees around the mosques. The implementation method consisted of four stages: seedling and site preparation, planting, monitoring of tree growth, and evaluation of social and environmental impacts. This activity was carried out in 40 mosques with the involvement of PRIMA DMI Sulsel, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Project Dakwah, and Phinisi ID, through a series of events: the Grand Opening, Sharing Happiness, and Mosque Safari. The results of the activity demonstrated the active participation of congregations and mosque administrators, demonstrated by the involvement of 40 beneficiary mosques in the tree planting and maintenance process, as well as the willingness of mosque administrators to provide planting space and monitor seedling growth. Four productive tree species—figs, longans, breadfruit, and limes—were successfully distributed and planted at the target locations. This initiative successfully strengthened local food security and expanded the mosque's role as a centre for sustainable environmental outreach.

Abstract

The problem of organic waste remains a challenge on the campus of Universitas Sulawesi Barat, primarily because of the increasing activity of campus residents and the suboptimal awareness of sorting and managing organic waste. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of campus residents in making and using a simple composter to support sustainable organic waste management. The activity methods included socialization, demonstrations, direct practice, and evaluation. The participants in the activity included students, lecturers, and elements of campus leadership/staff. The material provided covered the importance of organic waste management, the potential for utilizing waste into compost and liquid organic fertilizer (LOF), and the stages of making a simple composter. The results of the activity showed that participants were actively involved in discussions and practices and were able to understand the basic stages of making a simple composter. After the activity was conducted, several academic communities at Universitas Sulawesi Barat began using simple composters, including the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Integrated Laboratory UPA, the Forestry Laboratory, and direct use practices at the homes of several lecturers. Although the activity has not yet reached the implementation of organic waste processing on a large scale, the existence of the simple composter has the potential to support the reduction of organic waste volume and encourage environmentally friendly behavior on campus.

Abstract

Based on the results of observations and interviews with our partners, namely the community around the Social Forestry area, Bura Sendana State of Community Forestry (Hutan Kemasyarakatan/HKm) located in Tallambalao Village, Majene Regency, West Sulawesi, it was found that currently, females do not play an optimal role in management of forest products because there are no particular institutions for women. Therefore, women cannot access various formal sources of assistance, information, or capital provided by government agencies, private and other supporting institutions such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or universities. Therefore, it is essential to form formal institutions specifically for women. So, the community service partnership activity that we carry out is encouraging the establishment of a Women's Farmers Group (KWT) to manage the Bura Sendana social forestry area. This initiative is expected to support empowered female farmers from a cultural and institutional perspective. Become a pioneer in managing agricultural products from forest areas, which can improve the welfare of people in villages around forest areas in the long term. The main objective of this Community Partnership Program activity is to form a KWT to manage HKM Bura Sendana. Furthermore, we designed a participatory training to strengthen the KWT institutions that have been formed.
