Abstract

One of the problems in Kontar Hamlet in Botto Village, Campalagian District, Polewali Mandar Regency is the abundance of banana trees in house yards and in community gardens, causing many unused banana stems to become waste. To overcome this problem, the community service team from the Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of West Sulawesi conducted counseling and technical guidance regarding the processing of banana tuber waste into liquid organic fertilizer which can be utilized by farming communities in Kontar Hamlet, Botto Village, Campalagian District for applying to cultivated plants. The aim of implementing this outreach program is to provide direct understanding and training to the community regarding the management of banana tuber waste into liquid organic fertilizer which so far has not been utilized optimally due to lack of information and minimal knowledge of the local community. The method for implementing this activity is by providing direct counseling and training to the people of Kontar Hamlet. The results of this activity are organic fertilizer made from banana tubers and can be used for plant growth. Apart from that, around 90% of the community has understood the concept of liquid organic fertilizer during counseling, and around 80% of the community has known the process of managing banana corms into liquid organic fertilizer during training.

Abstract

Based on the results of observations and interviews with our partners, namely the community around the Social Forestry area, Bura Sendana State of Community Forestry (Hutan Kemasyarakatan/HKm) located in Tallambalao Village, Majene Regency, West Sulawesi, it was found that currently, females do not play an optimal role in management of forest products because there are no particular institutions for women. Therefore, women cannot access various formal sources of assistance, information, or capital provided by government agencies, private and other supporting institutions such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or universities. Therefore, it is essential to form formal institutions specifically for women. So, the community service partnership activity that we carry out is encouraging the establishment of a Women's Farmers Group (KWT) to manage the Bura Sendana social forestry area. This initiative is expected to support empowered female farmers from a cultural and institutional perspective. Become a pioneer in managing agricultural products from forest areas, which can improve the welfare of people in villages around forest areas in the long term. The main objective of this Community Partnership Program activity is to form a KWT to manage HKM Bura Sendana. Furthermore, we designed a participatory training to strengthen the KWT institutions that have been formed.

Abstract

Environmental pollution in Indonesia, such as agricultural waste such as rice husks, corn cobs, and coconut shells, often accumulates on unused land, causing environmental pollution. Biochar can be used to process waste while increasing soil fertility. This practice aims to evaluate biochar production from rice husks and its benefits. This activity involved students and teaching assistants at the Green House of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, West Sulawesi University. The pyrolysis process burns rice husks in low oxygen conditions to produce biochar, and its benefits will be tested. The study showed that rice husk biochar improves soil structure and fertility, increases water retention, and provides a habitat for beneficial microorganisms. Biochar increases fertilizer use efficiency and effectively contributes to reducing agricultural production costs. Adding biochar to the soil can increase the availability of nutrients such as major cations, phosphorus, and nitrogen, reduce fertilizer loss through leaching and evaporation, and reduce negative impacts on plant growth and soil health. Therefore, rice husk biochar is a potential soil conditioner that can increase the fertility and productivity of agricultural land. Biochar has porous properties and a large surface area that allows it to absorb and retain water, nutrients, and beneficial microorganisms. Applying biochar to agricultural land reduces biomass waste, increases crop yields, and reduces soil and water pollution due to fertilizer leaching. Therefore, rice husk biochar provides a sustainable solution for agricultural waste management and soil quality improvement.
