Abstract

The community of West Rappang Village relies heavily on agricultural yields, particularly rice cultivation. Consequently, pest attacks, especially by rats (Rattus argentiventer), pose a serious threat to food security and farmers' welfare. Conventional control practices, such as the use of rodenticides, have negative impacts on both the environment and human health, and may contribute to pest resistance. The objective of this community service activity is to enhance farmers’ understanding and skills in implementing environmentally friendly Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, while also promoting behavioral change toward sustainable agricultural practices. The methodology employed includes lectures and interactive group discussions conducted in collaboration with farmer partners in West Rappang Village, facilitated by the Unsulbar Farming Club (UFC). The training materials cover ecological rat control techniques, such as the use of bamboo traps, land sanitation, synchronized planting, and the utilization of owls as natural predators. Based on questionnaire results, there was a significant increase in farmers’ knowledge: 100% understood the health risks posed by rat infestations, 88% were aware of pest control information sources, and 100% recognized the importance of environmental cleanliness. This activity demonstrates that participatory and educational approaches can foster collective awareness and empower farmers as agents of change in implementing pest control techniques against rat attacks. The implication of this initiative is the development of a more resilient and sustainable agricultural system, which not only boosts productivity but also improves the overall quality of life for the village community.

Abstract

Water hyacinth is one of the organic materials that can be used to increase the organic matter content of the soil. The high organic matter content is expected to improve soil properties, particularly the soil's ability to retain water, thereby increasing water availability in the root zone. Increased water availability is a consequence of the high ability of water hyacinth organic matter to bind water, as well as the enhanced ability of the soil to infiltrate water due to the creation of good soil porosity. High water infiltration will reduce the amount of water flowing over the soil surface, potentially causing soil degradation due to erosion. It ultimately will increase water availability in the root zone. This Community Service activity aims to transfer the technology of utilising water hyacinth to increase water retention in the root zone of plants to farmers. Community service in the field is carried out through counselling and demonstrations of water hyacinth application in plantations. The results obtained indicate that the transfer of technology using water hyacinth to enhance water retention is acceptable to farmers, suggesting that the community service program can be considered a success. Farmers are very optimistic about applying what they have learned from this community service activity, as they believe the technology is straightforward to use in the field.

Abstract

The Farming Club Unit (UFC) is a student organization that focuses on sustainable agriculture through hydroponic cultivation. However, limited business diversification has hindered its economic potential, necessitating innovations to strengthen the institution and increase revenue. One promising solution is the farming of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots as an alternative for organic waste management and sustainable animal feed production. This community service program was implemented using a participatory-educational approach, which included lectures, interactive discussions, BSF farming demonstrations, and independent maintenance practices conducted by participants under the guidance of the service team. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test instruments, analyzed descriptively, and supported by gain score calculation to measure program effectiveness. The results revealed a significant improvement in participants' knowledge, from an average pre-test score of 31.0% to a post-test score of 95.3%, with an average gain score of 0.92 (in the high category). These findings indicate that the training effectively enhanced the capacity of UFC managers in mastering BSF maggot farming skills. The implication of this program is the creation of opportunities for UFC to diversify its business, generate additional income, and contribute to reducing organic waste generation through sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract

Pollewani Village is one of the areas in Tutar District, Polewali Mandar Regency, which has the largest and most remote administrative area in the regency, and therefore receives less attention from the regency government. This area has significant potential for dryland rice, with productivity reaching 3.97 tons per hectare in 2023. However, this yield is still much lower than that of wetland rice, corn, and cassava in the area. One solution to this problem is technological innovation, primarily through farmer training and the provision of modern facilities and infrastructure. By improving farmers' skills in dryland rice cultivation and introducing new superior varieties of rice seeds (Inpari-32), it is hoped that this will support the rate of increase in upland rice production in Pollewani Village. The implementation method includes providing interactive materials, practice in demonstration plots, and evaluation using questionnaires. The results indicate that this activity can increase farmers' knowledge, as evidenced by an increase in participants' average score from 33.33 to 70.
