Abstract

Polewali Mandar Regency comprises 16 sub-districts, with the most significant administrative area being Tubbi Taramanu Sub-district, which is one reason this region remains less "touched" by the local government. One of the main agricultural products of the residents of Tubbi Taramanu Sub-district is upland rice with a yield of 3.97 tons.ha–1 in 2023. However, this yield, compared with other major food crops, is still much lower than that of cassava, paddy, and corn. One effort to reduce harvest loss, especially for dryland rice, is to implement good harvesting practices and technology, as well as good post-harvest handling and technology, thereby ensuring that low productivity can still guarantee stable food availability for the residents of Tubbi Taramanu Sub-district, especially in Pollewani Village. This community service activity was implemented through extension services, which included providing materials and facilitating interactive discussions. The counseling sessions were evaluated using questionnaires administered before and after the sessions. The evaluation results showed an increase in farmers' knowledge, as evidenced by the average participant score rising from 45.88 to 62.94.

Abstract

Excessive use of inorganic fertilizers can cause soil degradation and environmental pollution. To address this issue, composting organic materials such as manure and wood chips can be an environmentally friendly alternative solution. This program aimed to demonstrate the composting process for a mixture of manure and wood chips through activities conducted by students of the Agroecotechnology Study Program at Universitas Sulawesi Barat, class of 2022, in the greenhouse. Compost was made by mixing 20 buckets of wood powder with 20 kg of manure, adding 35 ml of EM4 solution dissolved in 1 liter of water, and fermenting for 2-3 weeks. The results of the practical activity showed that the compost produced was dark brown, had an earthy smell, and had a crumbly texture, indicating that the decomposition process was successful. This compost has the potential to increase soil fertility, improve soil structure, and support sustainable agriculture in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner.

Abstract

Simbang Wetan Village faces a dual challenge: the accumulation of unmanaged flannel waste from the local convection industry and the need to enhance household-level food security. This community service activity aimed to transfer appropriate technology in the form of an innovative aquaponics wick system that utilizes flannel waste as a key functional component. The method employed a participatory learning approach, combining presentations, hands-on practice, and discussions. This activity was conducted on September 8, 2025, at the Simbang Wetan Village Hall, involving 24 residents. The program's success was measured quantitatively using pre-test and post-test instruments. Data analysis revealed a highly significant improvement in understanding and skills. Specific knowledge regarding the function of flannel fabric as an aquaponics wick surged dramatically from 8.3% in the pre-test to 100% in the post-test. Similarly, practical understanding of assembling the system from recycled materials increased from 4.1% to 87.5%. These results indicate that the workshop was highly effective in transferring knowledge and shifting the community's paradigm towards waste management. The broader adoption of this technology at the household level, along with continuous mentoring, is recommended to ensure program sustainability.

Abstract

Using inorganic fertilizers can increase crop productivity, but excessive and continuous use can degrade soil and cause environmental pollution. To overcome this problem, compost from lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala) leaves can be an environmentally friendly alternative solution. This activity aims to explain the process of making lamtoro leaf compost and its impact on soil fertility and plant growth. Through this activity, organic fertilizer has been produced in the form of compost from lamtoro leaves and wood dust, which is suitable for use as fertilizer. The manufacturing process includes collection, chopping, mixing with an organic activator, and fermentation until the compost is mature. From this activity, students can gain a direct understanding of compost production and the importance of using local organic materials for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Urban expansion has led to a significant decline in agricultural land and green open spaces. Urban farming emerges as an alternative approach by optimizing and managing limited open areas among urban structures. Urban farming initiatives conducted by the Flamboyan Dasawisma Group in Padaleu Village, Kambu District, Kendari City, provide green vegetables as a nutritional source, enhance environmental quality, and support efforts to mitigate the impacts of global warming. This Community Service Program (PKM) aims to improve community knowledge and skills while increasing awareness of the importance of utilizing household yard spaces to achieve family food security and environmental sustainability through urban farming practices. The program was implemented through educational outreach to community groups about the benefits and application of urban farming, followed by hands-on mentoring in establishing an urban farming garden as a demonstration model for the Padaleu Village community. The findings reveal a positive response from members of the Flamboyan Dasawisma Group, along with strong expectations for the program's continued support. This community service initiative is anticipated to provide tangible benefits to the local community, particularly the Flamboyan Dasawisma Group, by reducing household expenditures. Furthermore, community members demonstrated high enthusiasm for cultivating vegetables using the urban farming system.

Abstract

Inorganic or chemical fertilizers are often used by farmers to increase crop yield and quality in a short period of time. However, continuous use of inorganic fertilizers in high doses can reduce soil fertility, disrupt the balance of microorganisms, and pollute the environment. To address these impacts, the use of organic fertilizers becomes an environmentally friendly alternative that can improve soil structure and sustainably increase agricultural productivity. This practical experiment aims to understand the process of making vermicompost from a mixture of household organic waste and animal manure, as well as to evaluate the quality of the resulting vermicompost. The methods used include preparation of raw materials, pre-composting for seven days, worm inoculation, and maintenance of the medium for 30 days. The results of the experiment show that the vermicomposting process can accelerate the decomposition of organic materials and produce organic fertilizer with a fine texture and brown color. dark brown, with an earthy smell. Nutrient content analysis showed an increase in nitrogen and phosphorus levels compared to the raw material. Thus, the resulting vermicompost is suitable for use as an organic fertilizer for an increase in nitrogen and phosphorus levels compared to the initial material. Thus, the resulting vermicompost is suitable for use as an organic fertilizer to improve soil fertility and support sustainable agricultural cultivation.
