Abstract

Muhammad Abduh and Fazlur Rahman are among the influential Muslim scholars after the Medieval era of the eighteenth to twentieth century. Their characteristics of thought are often titled Muhammad Abduh as a Modernist and Fazlur Rahman as a Neo-Modernist. Their ideas became significant since they influenced several contemporary Muslim scholars in the Muslim world, such as Rashid Rida, Qasim Amin, Amina Wadud, Farid Esack, Nurkholis Majid, etc. This study examines the religiopolitical context of Muhammad Abduh and Fazlur Rahman in constructing their thoughts - the so-called - Modernism and Neo Modernism, followed by the comparison of both ideas. Through a comparative analysis of both scholars’ thoughts, this paper ends with some results that the Ideas of modernism and neo-modernism brought by Muhammad Abduh and Fazlur Rahman are very relevant to his religiopolitical context and in accordance with the needs of the people of that time. Modernism of the 19th century offered about being responsive to Western progress and sticking to tradition, while neo-modernism presented the response in a more systematic and methodic.

Abstract

This article discusses how the leadership of the first era of Indonesian President Joko Widodo (2014-2019) managed Islam as one aspect of his country’s identity in the global arena. The authors argue that two things influenced the image of Indonesian Islam in the Widodo era. First is the domestic pressure to reclaim the trust of Islamic political groups. Second is a global interest to maintain the status quo as a country with moderate Islamic characteristics that is also active in pursuing world peace. To do this, the authors use a two-level game point of view that sees the constellation of domestic politics and then relates it to how theWidodo government carries out its foreign diplomatic strategy. This article finds that the Widodo administration in the first era could balance the interests of creating an image of a friendly government to Islamic groups. On the other hand, it can also fulfil its commitment to engage in diplomacy as a middle power through strategies dominated by results oriented bilateralism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the history of halal-bihalal gathering held in the Mangkunegaran Palace. The tradition was carried out distinctively during the Mangkunegara VIII era in 1945-1978. The period marked the shift from the Colonial era to the Independent era of Indonesia, resulting in the dynamics of procession and aim of halal-bihalal. The culture-historical approach was employed to determine the specific pattern of phenomenon and to understand the morphology of culture. The stages of historical method, namely heuristics, criticism, historiography, and interpretation, were done. The results of research based on the theory of symbolism and the role of power show that halal-bihalal gathering in the Mangkunegaran reflected the social classes in which the invited guests with upper social level occupied the very very important personal seats. Nevertheless, the event also brought positive impact since people from various backgrounds could gather peacefully and eliminate the conflicts among the classes. As an implication, the tradition was perceived as an important event and held regularly. It was also popular outside the palace and imitated by Islamic organizations using the same term, halal-bihalal.

Abstract

This research examines the i’jaz (scientific miracles) of the Quran concerning the semantic field of the word al-baytu within the study of Islamic architecture, a topic that has not been previously explored. The study draws data from Quranic verses containing the term al-baytu and the semantic field of the word al-baytu, such as al-manzilu, al-maskanu, and others. The data collected is then interpreted through the lens of i’jaz (scientific miracles) of the Quran following the terminological framework of the Quranic lexicon. The interpreted results are subsequently analyzed using componential analysis. Based on the results and discussion, it is concluded that the i’jaz (scientific miracles) of the Quran in the semantic field of bayt in the Quran includes terms such as al-maskanu, al-baytu, al-qosru, al-manzilu, ad-dāru, al-qoryatu, and al-madīnatu. Al-maskanurefers to a single dwelling that provides comfort, unlike al-baytu, which also signifies a single dwelling but does not or cannot provide comfort. Al-maskanu is akin to the concept of "home," whereas al-baytu resembles the concept of "house." Al-manzilu serves as a hypernym for the terms al-maskanu and al-baytu, meaning a general place of residence, whether it provides comfort or not. Meanwhile, al-qosru denotes a luxurious residence. Ad-dāru refers to a single house along with its yard. Al-qoryatu is a collection of houses belonging to a community with racial and blood ties. Finally, al-madīnatu is a collection of houses belonging to a society with diverse tribes and races, not bound by blood ties.

Abstract

Abstract The kliwonan tradition at Jagabayan Mosque is a tradition that is familiar to the surrounding community. The tradition is connected to the sacred water in the mosque well which is considered sacred by the community. Water as something classified as a profane form has been transformed into a sacred one in the view of the community. This is in line with Mircea Eliade's theory about the transformation of profane into sacred. Thus, this research aims to examine the transformation of value from profane to sacred through Eliade's sacred-profane theory. Furthermore, it will examine the implications of these value changes on people's social actions. This research is a qualitative type with data collection methods through observation, interviews and documentation. The main data source in this research is the kliwonan tradition carried out by the community at Jagabayan Mosque itself, while other supporting data is taken from references that support the research data. The data set will then be processed using the descriptive-analytical method. The results show that the change in the profane value of the water to sacred is due to the attribution of the well as a source of water to the sacred entity of the guardian who used to make it. While the implications resulting from it are the creation of the kliwonan tradition itself and the finding of a special attitude by the community towards the water entity that is considered sacred.

Abstract

ndigenous religions in Indonesia include several registered organizations that struggle for their community rights. However, their struggle seems endless because the majority has insufficient knowledge and perspective of indigenous religions’ belief system. This study examines the process of their struggle historically to unveil their efforts to obtain their rights as citizens. Employing a qualitative method is suitable for this study because it utilizes literature reviews to understand the historical story of indigenous religions’ journey during their struggle. This study shows that the communities of indigenous religions should be paid attention by the government because the supreme council court of Indonesia has claimed legally their existence but the sub-institutions in each region cannot fully imply the legal standing of the decision.

Abstract

This research emphasizes the promotion of halal tourism, with a specific focus on the hotel industry as a key indicator. The objective of this study is to elucidate the social construction related to Sharia-based hotels, delving into the intricate relationship between religious values, political ideology, and considerations of public policy. Additionally, the research aims to examine the compliance conditions associated with Sharia labeling within these hotels. Employing qualitative methods, the study employs content analysis within the framework of existing policies and social construction. Furthermore, it utilizes participatory approaches involving five Sharia property business actors to assess the extent of Sharia practices within the hotel industry in Semarang City. The findings reveal that the management and services offered by Islamic hotel businesses do not comprehensively reflect Islamic understanding and identity. It is noteworthy that many practitioners in the Islamic hotel industry tend to base their Sharia concepts on consultations with Islamic religious leaders. Additionally, the incorporation of Sharia rules across various sectors, particularly within the tourism industry, is identified as potentially fostering a standardization of values. In response, the study suggests that policies and regulations should prioritize principles of public justice and guarantee equal constitutional rights to mitigate such homogeneity and preserve cultural diversity.
