Abstract

The present development concept has been widely criticized for being too sectoral and growth oriented. A new concept like Human Development introduced by the United Nation is a good alternative, but it is still sectoral in nature. This article tries to offer a more sociological concept of development, since it is based on the contention that to develop human being we have to develop its society. It means to develop “the basic elements of socio-cultural life” namely: the structural, cultural and processual elements. By analyzing the data on the informal sector in Solo collected with SSM methodology, I have come to the conclusion that the government of Solo city has been to some degree practicing the social development concept through developing the structural, cultural and processual aspects leading to the more inclusive society.

Abstract

The article aims to construct an analytical model to explain why the presence of Sundanese political leaders at the national level is relatively low despite that they are the second largest majority group in Indonesia. The model focuses on historical factor, social network, culture, as well as the role of local government and society. The historical factor is crucial as to describe the importance of Sundanese’s position with Bandung as its core in its sociopolitical relation with Jakarta. The social network explores the connectivity between Sundanese with the national network, while the cultural factor is essential in analyzing the effect of values and behaviour of Sundanese in politics. The model will also include the roles of local government and Sundanese society in supporting the Sundanese to increase the presence of their political leaders at the national level.

Abstract

Many countries, including Indonesia, have paid attention to support the development of creative industry. Economic sociologists and sociologits of art have done researches on dynamics of this industry for quite sometime. By employing concepts of Art World and institutional (social) networks, this study attempts to answer two important questions. First, how do dynamics of social relationships within Art Worlds occur in an arena of fashion creative industries in Bandung and Bali? Second, to what extent local government plays roles in the drive of development of this industry in both areas? The main focus of this study is distro fashion industry in Bandung and Balinese fine clothing in Bali. Extended case method has been used to collect data from various actors. Fifty key informants in each area have been interviewed. This study reveals that the Art Worlds of fashion industries in both areas need to re-invent themselves so that they are capable of inovating their methods of production and distribution. Moreover, local governments need to facilitate a constructive development of social networks among fashion producers. The future of creative fashion industry will depend on the maturity of social networks that signified by innovative cooperation between local governments and societies of fashion industries.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is the dynamic relationship in automobile industry between entrepreneur and the power in 1969-1998. The length of this study can be divided in three periods: seeking the industrial form, going to maturity, and realizing the industrial autonomous. Looking back to the Old Order and analyzing along three periods, this research has found that the structure transformed the interactions between actors—“the shifting patronage”. Giddens approach and theory of “structuration” is really clear in this industry and the model of this phenomenon is called as “symbiotic relationship”. It is different from Chalmers (1996) analyzed through economical-politics analysis, or Aswicahyono (2009) explored the linkage of automobile industry regarding value chain theoretical framework, or Aswicahyono, Chatib Basri, and Hal Hill (2000) concluded the pattern of ownership and public policy regarding the political economy view. Through historical approach, data were collected by desk research, in-depth interview and several group discussions along 2008-2010 in Indonesia and Tokyo as well.

Abstract

This article argue that “Chinese-ness” is an achievable entity to a social group with indigenous cultural identity. Previous studies tend to define ethnic identity as a single and objective entity. This study offers a new understanding on ethnic identity. Identity is defined as a process to identify a certain collectivity in which an individual feels he/she belonged to, while ethnicity is one of the manifestations of collectivities. Thus, identity is a subjective process, where each individual plays a significant role in determining his/her collectivity as his/her alter-ego. While ethnicity is an objective process, in which the society determine an individual’s collectivity. This qualitative research is conducted by interviewing seven informants with grounded approach, in which the researcher tries to build concepts from the collected data. This study pinted out that Cina Benteng is the whole community of Peranakan Chinese living in the countryside of Tangerang. However, some of its communities rejected that notion, and identified themselves as “orang keturunan”, a term which bought them closer to the indigenous identity. Through a long process, as a result of historic, infrastructure, demographic, and economic change, they eventually identified themselves as Cina Benteng, a term which bought them closer to the Chinese identity.

Abstract

As a process of military withdrawal from politics, the internal reform of The Indonesian National Defense Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia/TNI) has specific characters in its pattern as well as in its professionality. In this paper, Talukder Maniruzzaman’s concept of military withdrawal from politics and Robert K. Merton’s and Talcott Parsons’ functional analysis were laboured to inquire that process experienced by TNI. That inquiry used the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The result shows that TNI reform is a gradual, hierarchical and sustainable process. TNI reform can also categorized as professional military withdrawal from politics—a process which is not going suddenly nor hastily, with reformist considerations beforehand, and is based on an awareness about a need to correct TNI’s role in the past state politics. What makes it different from other countries’ military’s experiences is that this process had no immediate relationship to foregone general election, and were going without transfer of power to temporary civil government, social revolution, mass rebellion, or foreign invasion and intervention. Simultaneous with that reform is a process of refunctionalization, that is to say correctly reorder TNI’s position and role in the democratic order of national life, so TNI able to be functional simultaneously with other national functions or components.

Abstract

Globalization has brought some challenges and threats to the building of national defence and security of many countries, including Indonesia. Many efforts have to be made to answer these challenges and threats. One of these efforts is doing some necessary transformations in the institutions of military education—in this case, The School of Staff and Command of Indonesian Navy (Sekolah Staf dan Komando TNI AL/SESKOAL) that becomes the research subject of this article. This article argues that the attempt of military organization to do adaptation and anticipation in facing globalization can be done by transformation of institution of military education, especially to produce structure or to create new norm about professional military. One of the obstacles for this transformational process is the existing negative stereotype to the SESKOAL, so that that institution had been experiencing marginalization, whereas the institution of military education has significant role in creating professional and competence military. As the consequence, many military personnel hesitate to take part in the institution. The method that used in this research is qualitative method with socio-historical inquiry. This article uses theoretical framework inspired by Anthony Giddens’ thought about structuration.
