Abstract

This study examines the comparative performance of recycled glass and silica sand as filter media in the slow sand filtration process to treat laundry wastewater. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of recycled glass and silica sand in reducing Total Suspended Solids (TSS), turbidity, and phosphate content in laundry wastewater effluent. The selection of recycled glass as a filtration medium is due to its characteristic of having a small sphericity value so that its porosity value is large which results in a small headloss value. The use of recycled glass as an alternative media is an effort to reduce the exploitation of the use of sand media in filtration. The results of the study showed that the use of recycled glass was quite efficient than silica sand in reducing TSS and turbidity with a percentage of TSS removal (94%% vs 90%) and turbidity (90,57% vs 86,04%). While in phosphate removal, silica sand was more efficient than recycled glass with a percentage of removal (46,74% vs 83,48%). Before the research was conducted, a maturation phase was carried out for 2 weeks to form the schmutzdecke layer. The addition of Effective Microorganism 4 (EM4) was carried out to help the growth of the schmutzdecke layer in this study.

Abstract

Composite materials are essential for engineering applications due to their superior mechanical properties. Unsaturated polyester reinforced with glass fiber is widely used but optimizing its mechanical performance remains challenging. This study combines experimental testing and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/glass fiber composites. Composites were fabricated with varying glass fiber volume fractions, and their impact strength and density were tested. The results showed an optimal glass fiber fraction at 12.5%v, achieving the highest impact strength (142.80 kJ/m²) and increased density (1.4408 g/cm³). MD simulations validated these findings, highlighting the role of van der Waals forces in molecular aggregation and interfacial bonding. This study bridges experimental and MD computational insights, recommending the simulation of treated glass fiber in the future to explore the potential of treated glass fibers in enhancing the interfacial bonding and overall mechanical performance of unsaturated polyester/glass fiber composites.

Abstract

Microbiological tests were carried out to analyse the quality of frozen mackerel products based on food safety standards. The aim of this study was to assess the microbiological quality of frozen mackerel samples coded 0357/I, 0388/I, 0113/N, 0145/N and 0173/N by testing for the presence of Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. using methods from SNI 2332.1:2015, SNI ISO 11290-1:2012 and SNI ISO 6579-1:2017. The results showed that Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. were not detected in any of the samples tested. These results indicate that the products meet food safety standards and reflect the application of good hygiene practices and hygienic production processes. The absence of pathogenic bacteria also suggests that low-temperature storage effectively prevents bacterial growth. Based on these results, frozen mackerel products are considered to be of good quality, safe for consumption and in compliance with international standards.

Abstract

The steel and construction industry is currently growing very rapidly due to the increasing demand from various parties who want to see the progress of infrastructure in Indonesia. Design, manufacturing, and construction are the activities of PT XYZ, a government company. The majority of initiatives are focused on the production of steel-based goods. As personnel in the fabrication and construction industry often come into direct contact with heavy machinery and materials while performing their duties, accidents and occupational diseases are hazards that are difficult to prevent. Welding is one area of work that has a high rate of accidents and occupational diseases. To ensure the welding process runs safely, this research seeks to identify potential risks and hazards that may arise and carry out risk control in each work activity. Qualitative descriptive techniques combined with risk analysis using the HIRARC method is the methodology used in this research. Based on the results of the study, overall there are fourteen possible risks, including two high categories, one medium category, and eleven extreme categories. By increasing employee awareness of occupational safety and health (OHS), PT XYZ can increase productivity without sacrificing employee welfare.

Abstract

The growing population and increased community activities in DKI Jakarta have resulted in higher waste generation, averaging 0.7 kg per person per day, or 7,800 tonnes, which is primarily disposed of at the Bantargebang TPST. Although dominated by organic and inorganic waste, household hazardous waste (HHW) is also found at the community level. This is attributed to the use of chemical products in household activities, such as cleaning and personal care products, paints, pesticides and electronics. A study of 150 households of different income levels found an average generation of HHW of 0.0097 kg per person per day, with specific averages of 0.0098 kg, 0.009 kg and 0.01 kg for low, middle and high income levels respectively. HHW consists mainly of packaging waste from personal care and beauty products (28.62%), cleaning and household products (26.34%) and leftover medicine/medical waste (23.17%). HHW with infectious (39.32%) and toxic (35.63%) properties are more common than other properties. Waste generation projections, modelled using a simple dynamic system simulation, estimate that waste generation will reach 106,688.02 tonnes per year over the next 20 years.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the effect of tray spacing variations on the performance of tray aerators in reducing iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) concentrations in well water. A quantitative experimental method was used with three tray spacing variations (30 cm, 40 cm and 60 cm) and different tray levels. The results indicate that the tray aerator with 40 cm tray spacing achieved iron removal efficiencies of up to 85.83% and manganese removal efficiencies of up to 35.14%, outperforming other spacing configurations. Tray spacing and aeration time were found to have a significant effect on removal efficiency, with 40 cm spacing providing an optimum balance between turbulence and contact time. In addition, the highest increase in dissolved oxygen (DO) occurred at 30 cm tray spacing. This study concludes that proper tray spacing arrangements can improve the effectiveness of tray aerators in treating well water.
